what the real killer here in upstate was the reassessment that took place during the housing bubble. the asessed values dont match market values. last year when we were in the market we bid on 3 houses. the first 2 were at assessed value, but wouldn't bank appraise for those amounts. in 2005 my shack that i owed on 50ft of otsego lake was appraised at 185K. later that year it was reassessed at 640k with a 98% school levy. this was do to grossly over priced properties selling all over the lake, 4 to 5 times the actual value. after the bubble burst everyone unloaded drove the values to the basement and us long timers were left holding the tax bill. and since the local gov. had figued out how to spend the money, when i finally sold in 2012 tax rate had increased another 10%. all comes back to the gov. just mismanaging....well everything they put there fingers on.

police and the state watching you through your car at inspection??? guess im not as paranoid as i thought. the majority of cars DO NOT have tracking, survailance capabilitys in them. unless the car is equipped with a data collection device (such as flos snap shot or activated onstar) the systems are still well dumb. when the state plugs in for inspection it reads vin, mileage, and system readiness (for emmisions only), other info simply isnt avalible. now to think that the gov. has time to monitor you or me as to weather or not i left the tag on my mattress, or used floride toothpaste is way out there. yes the technology is there, but with the amount of information thats generated unless you are doing things are way out of line the gov. hasnt the time to monitor if my toilet paper is biodegradable. just my 2 cents.

will a different winch fit
tuckersdaddy replied to ants's topic in ATV's , UTV's, Dirtbikes & Snowmobiles
is the house painted? how did you make out with the winch? with winches bigger is always better. if you go lighter carry a snatch block with your tree straps (carry one with your bigger winch too) you can find them at any hardware store and effectivelly doubles the pull rate of your winch. double the blocks and it quaduples the pull rate (pain in the butt to get set up but can get you out of a baaaad situation) let us know how you made out -
the 2 big ones are saint patricks day week end, and the weekend of aug. 23. if your going on a site seeing tour may i suggest taking skyline drive? its part of the appilachin trail that runs thought va. you can pick it up in winchester va, and hop off at charlottesville. some of the best views you will find on your trip down. it very slow going (double the time of the highways) but if its sight seeing you want you wount be disappointed.

i dont believe you have much to worry about at the moment. the drill/frack plan has always been hands off of major water sheds supplying drinking water to municipalities. the finger lakes included. also cuomo is looking for any excuse not to make a decision on fracking. so take this time to have you towns/counties near your lakes, pass local moritoriums on drilling/fracking.

we put our electric on a timer, on early in the morning and evening, off during the day and late night. we notice a differance in the bill. Are you on well water? if so when you have a power outage you have no water anyway. (unless your prepared with a generator) the other reason for electric on ours is nothing else in the house runs on propane, which makes it another fuel source to keep up with. just my rambling thoughts...

Screw the hungry, throw the deer away.
tuckersdaddy replied to Single_shot's topic in General Chit Chat
Good point? hmmm eat venison donated by hunters or go hungry... thats not the other side of story, its the liberals making policy with out concern of the out come. keep one person out of how many from maybe getting sick by starving everyone in need. i dont see the good point. -

doc, those are dug well or springs. the building over this one is long gone they used to call them spring shacks. they were dug out where ever water was needed, barn, house, irragation. theres one in five streams that has part of a windmill and pump laying next to it. a friend of mines house used this type of water source until the early '90s untill the surrounding propertys were sold off, developed, and caused the spring to dry up when the new houses started drilling wells. most of the state land (at least in central ny, and the southern tier) were former farms bought up by the state in the late 1800s through the great depression. so whenever hunting these land near old foundations, stone walls (used as fences) and in general watch where your walking, that water is cold and deep!
