I just got Otis Pike parking Spot #10 (Line Road) for Sunday January 4th 2015. If anyone has any tips or information about this particular area of Otis Pike I'd appreciate a heads up. Also If my cousin from Staten Island cancels out on me I could add a hunter to my reservation. Thanks All! The DEC has extended the firearms season in Suffolk by making opening day a Sunday and including weekends as well until the end of January.

Wonder how long before we see these used?

The drone i was told about relayed images directly back to a tablet. BUT I'll ask him what model it is so i can tell what features are most useful. -
Do coyote and crow contests tarnish hunters' image?
EspressoBuzz replied to Curmudgeon's topic in General Hunting
I clean up the crows I've shot even though I use steel shot. I remind people that coyotes prey on pets and in season hunting doesn't really affect the population numbers. I also remind people that their local farmers like crow and coyote hunters for the most part. -

I know people already using them to survey and scout their land. A friend has the GPS coordinates of his trail cams and his drone flies a pre programmed route to each trail cam and returns to him. It takes five trips since the battery only lasts 12 mins in warm weather. Instead of driving deer what if they helped keep trespassers off your land? -
The real issue is why is the will of the people not being upheld? The bill to ban the use of that type of maternity cage passed by a large margin and polls have shown that over 75 percent of New Jersey population is in favor of banning them. The question is why does corporate/political interests trump the voters of New Jersey? With concerns toward CAFO why are laws written to except them from clean water and air laws?

Any help on Long Island.

I hunt L.I. DEC land for the last few years mostly small game but its fun, close and fairly productive once you have scouted and gotten to know an area. I can probably help ya. -
Thanks and Giving! May we all experience the joy of both 365 days a year.

Seems like just more of my facts trumping your facts, or I have better info than the state hired biologists has, what do they know anyway. Is there no end to people who distrust ANY study or program conducted by the "state"? And by state i mean DEC. I live by the saying take things with a grain of salt, but some people live in the middle of Bonneville salt flats. I can quote facts too but i can tell you i didn't pull them out of my ass, a gut feeling is not a fact. I wonder what would happen if whenever we state a "fact" we listed the source of the fact just like a college student or scientist? Necro thanks for the heads up! Not only about this particular place to "fee hunt" but also for the honestly of your feelings and intuition. The most important lesson I learned was "listen to your inner voice when it tells you something is wrong".

In case you see a kangaroo in Putnam or Westchester this weekend

I hunt in Suffolk all the time and usually no more than 40 mins away from home but i could go further east too. It's not my ideal hunting situation but it isn't horrible like many imagine. On quiet winter days when my wife has something to do and now that my kids are older and have their own way of getting around I keep the basic hunting stuff in a large plastic bin so I can just throw it in the back of the car and Go! My cousin a member at the Richmond gun club tells me deer and Turkey routinely wander onto their gun range and everyone has to stop shooting, apparently they are so use to the gunfire they fear it not at all.

In East Hampton township i believe a home owner must have ten acres before granting permission to anyone even himself. There is a town permission form that must be carried at all times when hunting and that includes the land owner who grants permission to himself. But that could be the north fork. http://town.east-hampton.ny.us/DocumentsPDF/LandAcquisition/Hunting/20142015HuntingGuide.pdf Good Luck!

From all that I've read Westchester has more coyotes than a suburban county should have. I'ts seems strange that in ten years you haven't seen too many or taken any coyotes. I'm just saying I'd be telling the land owner of every coyote i'd killed on their property. In Columbia county when I first approach a property owner about hunting their land I never even mention deer, I ask if i can coyote hunt first, often they will allow me to deer hunt after a few seasons of coyote hunting.

Guess it's that time of the year again. This baby grew overnight, soaking rain yesterday, chill sunny weather today. I thought to myself let me check that old oak stump. Way more than I can eat so I'm gonna try pickling the rest after tonight's mushroom saute.

Ewwwwww how can you eat a cute bunny rabbit!!! Once again the liberals are blamed for anti hunting crap. I have found that on Long Island it has nothing to do with political views and more to do with how you're raised to respect and treat animals. My folks came from the old country and raise rabbits and chickens in Brooklyn for food. My parents taught me to respect and treat humanely the animal I'm using for food. I was NOT taught that rabbits are pets. The fact is in our highly mechanized world most people have been removed from the idea that the red stuff under the plastic at the supermarket called meat is from an animal. None of us will go hungry if we don't hunt and that aspect alone distances us from where or how our food is obtained. If you want to blame someone blame the food companies that process food beyond the ability to recognize what animal it came from while selling us a false image of a farm raised animal. Finally, the cuteness of the animal hurts hunters. As people who have little real contact with wildlife venture from their urban enclaves they carry with them the idiot notion that these (hunted) animals need protection from hunters. These same people don't mind throwing a live lobster into a pot but cry at the aspect of hunting. Don't blame the liberal blame the idiot who first brought home a rabbit as a pet! On a side note I am often asked if I enjoy gutting and plucking/Skinning my chicken or rabbits. WTF??? no one really enjoys doing it but I tell them I do enjoy the satisfaction of knowing I know how and can do it. While they starve!

Glad to share, hate to type too much ; ) This link is the best I've found but there are many more I'm sure. https://www.google.com/?tab=ww#q=how+to+make+prosciutto+at+home Whats different from what I do? Well mostly the fact I grow my own herbs and spices when I can. Most importantly I use the best quality sea salt and salt peter i can get usually ordered online but occasionally brought back from my folks in Italy. I use a vented and modified plastic wardrobe for the final 18 month drying process. PM me with questions, I'm sure I've forgotten something.....
