What kind of hearing protection you use for turkey hunting if any .
Otto replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
My hearing is pretty bad and getting worse, constant tinnitus in both ears. Very difficult to hear a bird, let alone pinpoint where the sound is coming from. I have been thinking about something like this and looked at a in-the-ear set at Bass Pro, but they were over $250. I really should get real hearing aids, but not sure if I can be using those in the woods when shooting. -

Go get ‘em Dan!! Good Luck!

It’s in Hank Shaw’s cookbook “Buck, Buck, Moose”. I don’t see it online.

I made an “Italian Pot Roast” with a venison neck I had in the freezer. Sorry, no pics, but it did happen. I will tell you what: I will never, never, ever use the neck for grind or anything else. It was awesome!! Both wife and daughter loved it and they knew where on the deer it came from!

Thanks Buckmaster, I’ve been looking at these and am going to get one for each of my saws. Different size chains. I do have a very old motorized chain saw sharpener from my fathers farm supply store and it does a great job, but you have to wait to sharpen the chain when you are back from cutting. I can take this into the woods and keep it sharper for longer.

I have brined domestic turkeys before, definitely juicier overall. This year at Thanksgiving, I skipped the brining and salted the skin good and let sit overnight uncovered in the fridge. Skin crisped up real nice and meat was flavorful and juicy. It was stuffed though. If you really want to use the whole bird, consider placing it inside a cooking bag and stuffing it with onions, lemons, oranges, etc. to help keep it moist. For a wild bird, I would suggest spatch-cocking it into two parts, brining it and either smoke or grill over low heat. You can add bacon on top if you want, but I have done it before and if you go low and slow enough and do brine it, you will be fine. Season the outside with whatever you please, plus olive oil. Or, as suggested, use the legs and thighs for one recipe (i.e Hank Shaw Carnitas - https://honest-food.net/turkey-carnitas/) And then use the breasts and skin for a roulade https://www.nwtf.org/hunt/article/wild-turkey-roulade Use the remaining parts to make a stock for your gravy.

I took a jake at 6:09 am. Not many days open to me in May for more turkey hunting, so I planned to harvest one at my first opportunity. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk

Big Push To Make NY A Sanctuary State
Otto replied to Steve D's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
As far as I know, Onondaga County is not a sanctuary county. The City of Syracuse is. The Onondaga County Sherrif said he would comply and assist with all ISIS requests. -
Happy birthday to the coolest dude on huntingny.com!

We have used kayaks before, but that means 2 or more vessels for you and your hunting party. Also, we have to cover them with burlap to hide them at our set. We found this Grunman aluminum canoe for cheap and camoed it up ourselves. Great for 2ppl and we can take a third person too. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk

I harvested some ramps on Saturday, grilled them over charcoal with olive oil salt and pepper. Delicious! I pickled some last year and they were deleicious as well, planning to do a few more jars of that this year. I did find morels last year while turkey hunting. I fried them up and added them to an omelette. Pretty good too.

Bummer. I will keep an eye out for that coloration variation, I have not noticed it before.

Oh? Even around the eyes? I see the streaking in a lot of other pictures of different deer.
