Although probably not stated in the terms of the sale, both the buyer & seller can assume some modest time frame for the buyer to receive & try the used item to determine advertised functionality. NOT 60 days and a trip to Alaska before testing! First, you're not responsible for the buyer's poor planning! Then again, what's your reputation worth, $175? Tell the buyer, in PC terms, he's a fool, a procrastinator and requesting a seemingly fraudulent claim with extraneous circumstances. Which all falls outside of your control! You might consider refunding $1/2 as a goodwill gesture. Damned if you do, damned if you don't...! Brings back ugly nightmares of (ebay) sales of used items bringing out the worst in human nature.

New 2016 crossbow legislation introduced
nyslowhand replied to nyslowhand's topic in CrossBow Hunting
Bill S7005 still sits in the Environmental Conservation sub-committee. Similar bill introduced in the NYS assembly sits there also. Maybe after we get past Tuesday's primary election things will progress. Wishful thinking on my part!?! -
New 2016 crossbow legislation introduced

Update - Similar crossbow legislation from both the Senate & Assembly sit in the hands of the Environmental Conservation sub-committee. For crossbow legislation over the past 3 years, that's basically become a death sentence. -
New 2016 crossbow legislation introduced

All TV hunting shows should come with an initial disclaimer revealing exactly how many 100s of hours of stand time is edited to show a ~18-20min hunt segment, less the commercials. Most don't reveal that the hunting occurred on 1000s of leased acres and hunter was located by a guide who had done countless days of scouting and reviewing trail cam photos before the hunter even showed up. Almost forgot, the TV professional hunter's only job is to act like they're enjoying it & everyone else should be able to do what they've done. Hunt & be paid for it, my dream job! -
Forging ahead.

Should have used a square drill bit, would have become a simple press fit! -
I'm definitely pro-Xbow, mainly because I'm retired, have had to reduce my compound bow's draw wgt and my full draw hold time is pretty dismal. I've bow hunted for ~40yrs, so the Xbow is a great compromise for me. I also like the idea that youths can get into the early season deer hunting w/o a lot of dedicated, lengthty practicing with a vertical bow, Those of you that mentioned work & person obligations interfering with your vertical bow proficiency should be able to relate to any 16yo having social, athletic &/or academic obligations resulting in the same time constraint issue as an adult!?!! As far as the "noob" factor, think you can blame the NYS legislators for their 2014 definition of what a Xbow is, when it should be used and what licenses are required. What the group that lobbied again Xbow implementation & the specific laws enacted, do allow an individual to go into a big-box sporting goods store, buy a Xbow. a ML license and hunt the same day. The legislators dropped the ball not requiring the bow safety course as a prerequisite. Of course that would have admitted the Xbow was more similar to other vertical archery tackle than a rifle. It did open Pandora's box...! Those of you that bow hunt with your weapon of choice, whether long, recurve or compound bow and are upset because some one on an adjoining property chooses to use a Xbow which might have some advantages over you ..... IMHO, seems some what hypocritical!

Can't speak to where you're located, but out here in Bonneville, the Town Hwy Dept is the best source for roadkills as was mentioned above. Know a guy that's an avid coyote hunter and has an agreement with the local Town Hwy Dept. They get notified of a roadkill, they contact this guy and he picks it up for his bait pile. Everyone is happy! The carcass is removed, the town employees don't have to deal with it, disposal isn't an issue, law enforcement doesn't have to do trivial paperwork and the yote hunter is ecstatic, basically a win-win-win!

New 2016 crossbow legislation introduced
nyslowhand replied to nyslowhand's topic in CrossBow Hunting
The timing of this new Xbow legislation was not ideal. Don't many of these minor legislations get attached to the new budget proposal? Then when the budget deadline reaches the 11th hour they get pealed off and never see the light of day again. Convinced the Xbow legislation that was proposed last year went the same route. Wait & see! -
The real reason the doe only regulation in specific WMUs failed was that hunters did not want to be subjected to the temptation of a big buck being within range and only having a legal doe tag! This will follow true if this restriction were continued no matter what weapons are allowed in a doe only restriction, bows, Xbows, MLs, rifles, shotguns, RPGs.... Granted, if the proposed Xbow legislation is passed it probably will put more hunters in the woods during bow season, at least in the SZ. In NO way is the Xbow a cure-all for the over population issue.

^^^ Exactly what it should be, a choice!

New 2016 crossbow legislation introduced
nyslowhand replied to nyslowhand's topic in CrossBow Hunting
That's interesting! Bet it's a whole different crowd in the big box hunting stores where less expensive models are available...!?! The DEC or NY legislature has creating a unique situation when they went the route with the required paper you sign and cut out of the reg booklet stating you're qualified to use a Xbow safely. I truly believe that to use a Xbow, you should be required to take the archery hunter safety course. If the DEC requires this there will be an uproar from those that have used one for 2yrs and never took the bow course! What they should have done (I'm an expert at hindsight!) was to issue a nominal, maybe $10 license to hunt with a Xbow and now moving forward all those without that previous license or bow cert would be required to take the bow course. Will be interesting! -
What you went through is my worst nightmare! Probably why I'm OCD about discharging &/or reloading after hunting with my ML in any wet or high humidity conditions like snow, rain, fog, etc. Rather throw away any questionable powder/pellets than to have a potential encounter end with only the pop of the primer after sitting for hours/days waiting for it to occur. Keep your powder dry! If the O-rings on your breech plug are in good condition, lightly grease the threads and you devise a way to keep moisture out of the business end (ie; balloon), you can minimize any moisture getting near the powder/pellets. As scary as it might have been seeing the dissolved pellets dripping out of your ML, they probably wouldn't have gone off w/o a spark (primer) or possibly not at all. Modern BP doesn't get unstable, super potent or overly explosive from aging, deterioration or introducing moisture. It simply loses its' max effectiveness &/or explosive properties.

That's just un-American! Thought everyone was required to have a "honey-do-list"! LOL

New 2016 crossbow legislation introduced
nyslowhand replied to nyslowhand's topic in CrossBow Hunting
Pretty sure similar bills were introduced in 2015. Believe they got pinned to the budget bill, stripped out and then forgotten. Like what's introduced? Lets push our legislators to get it passed. Take 15min, find your legislator's web page & email your opinion to them! We all know who'll be lobbying against it! -
From newsletter sent out by NY Crosbow Coalition: Senator Patrick Gallivan has introduced Bill # S7005 which classifies a crossbow. Please Call and Write your Senator asking they support S7005 What is in S7005 Classifies Crossbows as a bow, requiring the Bow Privilege instead of the Muzzleloader Privilege Eliminates the 200 lb maximum draw weight restriction Eliminates the 17' minimum width restriction Aligns the minimum age for crossbow use with other archery equipment. Allows 12 & 13 year old's to hunt big and small game with a crossbow Permits crossbows at the same 150' setback as all other bows Permits Bowfishing with crossbows Allows anyone wishing to, to use a Draw Lock Device without need for a permit Removes the restriction on minors and their mentors using a crossbow to hunt from the ground Allows Crossbows to be used during the entire archery season in all archery areas except for Suffolk and Westchester Counties and the Archery only areas of Albany and Monroe Counties. The bill does not address the exclusion of crossbows on Long Island or Westchester or the archery only areas of Albany and Monroe Counties. To our members in these areas, we still believe those areas should be included and we will continue to pursue that, but we can not do it alone. We need everyone to contact your legislators and request your county be included in this bill.

Haven't watched any new episodes, but have gotten caught up on the past ones. Couple of things automatically come to mind. Isn't there a blatant attempt to pair up polar opposites just to increase the drama effect of the show? Basically, scripting events that otherwise were supposed to be real scenarios. Ah, reality TV...!??! Also, bet they won't be shooting any more shows in Guyana after the last couple that went the 21 days and suffered long term effects of bugs, fly or flea bites long after the episode's shooting. The things people will do for money or 15 minutes of fame!!!

Don't really think you can call a turkey in with a predator's (owl) call???? Owl calls are basically locator calls and work best when turkeys are roosted in the trees, generally. After the sun comes up, there are a lot of locator calls that'll get a shock gobble response. Like someone else already mentioned, a call imitating a gobble sometimes evokes a shock or challenging response, but ..... use with caution!!!!

Anyone else think this was a Bronco's (Elway) retirement option given to him? Retire on top OR continue to play for less money and be a back-up QB. To quote Kenny Rogers: "You've got to know when to hold 'em, Know when to fold 'em, Know when to walk away..." Feel sorry for poor Peyton, will have to survive on only his ~$12M/yr advertising & sponsorships. Suppose the income from his 21 Papa John's pizza stores will help some!??! Poor boy...

FYI - Below is from Hoyt's owner's manual (Note the "...light, spot lubrication...". meaning a drop or two per cam's pivot. How much odor can that produce???). This is a more critical maintenance item in compound type crossbows with their shorter limbs, 12-14" draw length and aggressive cams than in the traditional compound bows. Unless you're still stubbornly hanging on to your old, original Bear Whitetail Hunter bow. LOL "A light, spot lubrication of the axles where they pass through the wheel/cam should be done on a regular basis (1,500-2,000 shots). In adverse hunting conditions where dirt, dust, and moisture are encountered, lubrication may be done on a daily basis. Hoyt recommends that you use a silicone or Teflon based lubrication or any other quality grease available at your local Hoyt Pro Shop. It is not recommended that you use "penetrating oils" such as WD-40, EZ #7, Fast Break, etc. Note: Cam & 1/2 System bows feature sealed stainless steel ball bearings which do not require lubrication."

In my elementary & middle school days in Corning I was always hustling the neighbors on the block to mow their lawns with a reel push mower or shovel their sidewalks. Still remember one older lady that would give me $2, which was astronomical considering most gave me $1 or less. Moved to a rural area in Schuyler County during my HS days, so picking grapes in the fall was about all I had available to make any money. If I recall correctly, the rate was ~$0.10/0.15 per 8qt basket. First real full time job right out of HS was at a local Acme grocery store bagging and carrying out groceries for the customers. Pretty sure it was min wage, the number $2.85/hr seems to ring a bell. Then Uncle Sam gave me room & board and a stipend for 4 years. Just as a reference, remember ~10 years ago having a hard time finding a HS kid to help me clear & pile brush on weekends for $10/hr, under the table. Kid that did end up helping me was great. We worked at least 5-6hrs every Sat & Sun, weather permitting, from April to about Labor Day. At the time I was ~60yo, so I didn't work him any harder than I'd work myself. Paid him cash at the end of every work day & had to give him a ride home, ~12mi. Got so much accomplished that summer I gave him a bonus, bought him a used Mathews compound bow. Kind of a pathetic commentary, but none of the other kids I tried to get to help me wanted anything to do with manual labor.

How to destroy / disable old hard drives ?

Ask Hilary...!?! Opps, did I say that.... -
Did watch a few episodes a couple weeks ago for the 1st time. They certainly get put into some very extreme locations with gators, super bugs, big snakes, etc. Funny thing is one show had a dude go into a panic attack over critters outside his shelter at night and it took rescuers several hours to get to him. Obvious the dude was an idiot as he had a bigfoot phobia and then agreed to do Naked & Afraid...!?! Other episodes when individuals needed a medic, they had help within minutes. WTH!!!! Kind of like the Bear Gylis show Man vs Wild with the disclaimer at the beginning of the show about him having assistance available for medical or rescue emergencies near him at all times. Just another show(s) depicting reality TV scenarios that are not real at all! Overlooking the un-reality aspect, the contestant's personalities/egos, conflicts between the pairings and the supposedly expert male survivalists failing miserably and their female companions having to pick-up the slack..... Makes the show kind of interesting, sort of!

Ladderstand Blinds / Concealment
nyslowhand replied to peepsight's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
Not to hijack this thread, but if there were a top 10 list of ladder stand use techniques or tips & tricks, concealment would more than likely end up at #9 or #10. IMHO - When I'm choosing a spot I'm primarily looking along/near travel routes of course, but secondly at the proposed location's backdrop, sky-lining or what my profile might look like with & w/o the foliage on the trees..
