  1. There have been numerous times when a gobbler responded from hundreds of yards away to soft clucks or yelp that I wouldn't have been able to hear from 50 yards away... I remember one bird in PA that was gobbling down over a steep hayfield a couple of hundred yards from me... I took the rubber band off my Lynch Foolproof, and when I set it down beside me to get situated, the paddle slipped and gave a soft cluck...The bird immediately gobbled and made a beeline up over the field ..I never touched the call again and killed him at 30 yards, standing in the field and looking directly at my position..
  2. Also consider that piebalds tend to be genetically inferior....Big racks are quite unusual on piebald bucks.... A friend of mine took a piebald 8 point from my property a number of years ago...It was a beautiful specimen, but weighed only 100 pounds dressed and had a little 8 point basket rack....He had a full body mount done and it is a very nice addition to his trophy room...
  3. Point well made....However since 1975 there have only been 2 years that I have not filled at least one spring gobbler tag here in NY.... There have also been several years when I have filled tags in 3 or 4 other states as well as one Canadian Province, so I ain't exactly a virgin.....All of my out of state hunting has been DIY, either on public land or private land with permission...No guided hunts or canned hunts.... Ain't nuthin' TO this turkey hunting...
  4. Fair enough, My Friend...I have been killing gobblers since 1975, and there is still a lot of stuff that I don, 't know....
  5. A lot of things could be said about BILL, but not providing honest information is not one of them... As far as long boxes go, I do not have an opinion because I never have run one.. However there is a member of this forum who runs one and kills big gobblers every year in two states..
  6. It is indeed a striped bass.....For many years they were called rockfish in Chesapeake Bay and many other places south of Noo Joisey....
  7. DAMN !! Perhaps he could adopt ME as an Uncle and invite me down for the duck hunting and fishing...I would be in hog heaven !!
  8. No weight at all, My Friend.....Three is the charm....We'll get you a gobbler this year...
  9. I'm rather fond of possums....Could be because I am a George Jones fan...
  10. I have a bunch of 12 gauge 3" magnum turkey loads....Some of them have been carried around in my vest so long that I can no longer read the shot size...However, they are either # 4 or #6 in 1 7/8 or 2 Oz. loadings, and I know ( from patterning) that they are are sure kill from my gun out to 45 yards, which is as far as I will shoot....
  11. My MIL kicked the bucket in 1979.....Can't say that I miss her.....
  12. I know many guys on here like the Vortex, and I readily admit I have no experience with them... However, all of my scopes are Leupold except two Burris....Nothing has ever gone wrong with them and if it does I know the company will take care of it, despite the fact that I have bought all of them used...
  13. Yeah..A memorable day..Treeguy sat on my lap and we talked about the first thing that popped up.....
  14. Stan Potts....Nevah hoid of him....Of course I don't watch phony ass hunting shows much..... We had a local whitetail expert here in Dogpatch (RIP) He had over 40 BIG ( 130-160 inch) whitetails in his trophy room.... They are probably still there, since his widow is still alive....He claimed that he had killed all of them, but it is hard to keep secrets in a small town....Seems he had been traveling to new England and the midwest to purchase big whitetail racks and had been giving local taxidermists lots of business buying capes and getting mounts done with them....He just wanted everyone to think he was the world's greatest whitetail hunter... Sad part was that he was a very good hunter, and had taken a few of them himself...Perhaps 4 or 5 of the 40 he claimed to have taken...When it gets to that point, I think the antler mania is a sickness.....
  15. WAY cool....next hunt take along at least a can of sardines for him !!
  16. I think I'll have another beer....<<sigh>>....
  17. Happy Birthday, Mister Calabash, WHENEVER it is !!
  18. That said, being 70 years old and having some health issues, I will take the vaccine when it is available to me... If I were 20 years younger and in good health, I might not, but at this point in my life, I believe the odds are more in my favor taking the vaccine...
  19. After working in an R&D facility for many years with PHDs, I'd have to agree with this statement......
  20. Congrats, Bob....I had 3 springers over the years and loved every one of them.... My second one flushed and retrieved a limit of woodcock ( limit was 5 then) including a water retrieve when he was 6 months old... Hunting with the same dog a couple of years later, my partner and I dropped two limits of mallards....The dog could not find one that came down on a slant, so after some time we shot another to fill our limit....About that time Doc came out of the swamp with the lost bird, so we walked out with one duck over the limit and hoped that the game warden wasn't waiting on the road...Fortunately, he wasn't...
  21. I am no expert, but I believe it is a Gewher ( SP) 98, which was standard issue in WWI, rather than the K98K , which was standard in WWII....
  22. It is a Mauser 98 for sure.....Good chance it is a K98K because so many of them were brought back from Europe after WWII.. However, there are many other 98 Mausers out there.. Wildcat Junkie would be a good source for info on Mausers, as would DaveBoone....
  23. Looks like a Bishop stock.....I had a Springfield 03A3 on a Bishop stock for awhile....Fairly well done conversion but heavy as hell.....Shot very well with the same handloads I load for my M-1 Garand.......
  24. It is heavy because there is still a lot of metal remaining, judging by the steps not turned off the barrel.... Also, it appears to have the issue safety, which was compensated for that extra high "see thru" scope mount... Looks like a pretty nice aftermarket stock....What is the chambering ?
