Remington Layoffs Announced
thphm replied to Mr VJP's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
It all boils down to the free loaders, welfare cheats and people sitting on there fat butts not willing to work for a buck also gotta have sidewalks, curbs and a town swimming pool with a life guard and nurse..That makes the Taxes go up and drive these companies out of the state. I have friends that this state drove out because of the taxes and moved down South, Have buildings 5 times bigger then they had here and say life could not be any better then it is down here. -
Oderless mineral spirts first to get the heavy stuff off, then a good gun cleaner followed by a light coating of Hoppes gun oil on everything inside and out.

Need a new backpack
thphm replied to Waldershrek's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
Why not just get what the kids pack there stuff to take to school.Does not have to be camo.Deer aren't going to follow you.I must have at least 6 anything from what you are looking for to packs for hauling boots and clothing in 0 degree hunts for the day. Just think for the worst situation as getting twisted up in the woods at sunset or tracking that deer you just shot and you need to follow a blood trail or lack of blood trail. Get a pack to carry what you need to carry to spend the night if needed. -
The .308 was tested by the US armed forces. There sharp shooters did the testing and I beleive the used Win. model 70's. back then.No the average GI.and his garand or whatever. They wanted a lighter in weight and size to be able to carry more ammo.It just worked out to be more accurate, again there sharp shooters did the testing. Also Sniper Country and Accurate Shooters did testing with all available bullet weights and the .308 shined above the 30-06 again by seasoned benchrest and long distance shooters. I sold both my .308 and 30-06 rifles but kept my reloading dies and soforth for them if I decide to go back. Either one will work fine in NY for deer .

In my 60 years of hunting most likley had every thin out there, the worst is the plastic coverd hot seats Too Noisy when walking,The strap on swivel seats are good, just keep them oiled or greased.Fold up seats are good if you can find a flat piece of ground in the woods,Stadium cushions work, the ones with a back rest,My favorite is a piece of reprocessrd wool I found, about 18" wide x 16" deep and close to an inch thickI gust cut slits in it for a belt to fit threw and I have a folding saw, clippers and a fixed blade knife in i., Light Quiet does not get wet and comfortable, thats if I am doing any walking and still hunting. In my natural tree stump blind I use 18" dia. logs cut to fit me.with my cussion on top, can swivel 300 degrees Quiet.I have also used the thee stumps in my old ground blind.

You ever see a State Trooper with a P****d look on his face ,Years ago of all places on the Throgsneck bridge going to L.I. , I get pulled over , 2 Bucks and 2 Does on the roof of the Blazer. He checked every thing he could including to see where our firearms were and if they were empty. Everything was legal, needless to say he could not do a thing but say have a good evening.

As a old die hard 30-06 shooter who has reloaded a 1000 plus 30-06 from 110 gr. to 220 gr. and shot them all agreed both will be goo for deer in new york. I hate to say this but the .308 is more accurate then the 30-06, but as said above most of the hunters will never see the difference. The 165 gr. horanady sst is a good round for deer even at long distance And the 180 gr. nosler partition is good for Elk. The do make a 220 grain for the .308 but what would you use it for in new york. I found in my rifle( 30-06 )the 165 gr. shot the best and kocked down anything I shot at. How the heck can a $235.00 rifle be that reliable, I have re barrled some of my rifles that a barrel blank cost more the that.

For many years we would carry them on the roof of Chevy. blazers at times up to 4 in one trip. Now that I hunt just my own property I just put them in the bucket of my JD and take it down to my block and tackle and let it hang for a day or two. weather permitting.

This is what I do when I see a bear , Have to agree with SOB had the same experiance only that was 45 years ago.

30-06 is a good all around caliber 110 grain for small critters to 220 grain for the big stuff. I would shy away from the big box store deals, what if it does not work right. And package scopes are not the greatest.Go to a local Mom and Pop gun shop, You might pay a few dollars more but the service would be there if needed and the will recommend a good scope for the distance you are going to shoot and set it up for your type of hold,' Enjoy it when you get one.

I have been wondering why the deer have been so on guard most of the time this year. This could be the reason.
-
And the turkeys like it also.

Mom and the young ones, clover and pasture seed mix over 5 years since planted, They are here all year eating in this plot.
-
It depends where ( what part of the state ) I planted some in the spring and it came right up ( pretty flat ) planted some more near there on about a10 - 20 degree slope nothing came up. We had plenty of heavy rain this year, so the sloped area got washed out pretty good. This month the weather has not been as hot as other years and we got rain at least once a week. My regular lawn around the house( extra clover + conservation mix) had to be cut at least every 5 days. In the Catskills.

I wonder if it made it's way up north of there So that's where all of the young deer have been dissapering to
-
NICE ,deer and pictures.

It depends as, What will you do with it, do you have money for a mount, are yo alone and what size. I have let a few pass and friends have also est. weight 600 lbs. Just in too rugged areas up very high. Helped a friend I was hunting with that day carry out a 375 to 400 pound one from down in a wash out 100 feet up all around. On state land( where no motorized vech.were allowed) we were young and strong back then.First it was like a bowl of jelly and it stunk like hell. And a good hike to where we were parked. I swore that day Never Again.

Not counting and getting worked up about it, too many years of doing it in the past.I will get out there when I get there. But the thrill of seeing that trophy deer on opening day still gets to you, no mater how many seasons were spent in the woods.Good luck to everyone this year.

A friend bought his when he was 18, he is now 72, that is 54 years ago and still hunts. I think he got his moneys worth.

Google Atsko products, they have a pretty good wright up on what and how deer see. I have been washing all of my clothes in sport wash for a very long time and had deer right alongside my platform 8 feet off of the ground dressed in bright orange head to toe and never spooked them. One time I had a 6 pointer stand there for 15 minutes before he diceded to walk off.
-
Gro, I have done it with a buck.It would come behind the house with his sisters when still fawns every day,He had his favorite spot in the woods and hang out there. If I were posted near by he would walk by stop look and continue on walking. This went on every year, from it being a spike to last year when it was a 10 pointer. We will see this year if the old boy is still around.

The kid in the video mad a good shot, look where he is hunting, wide open long distance, I bet that is the typical style of shooting there and that is what they are adjusted too. I my neck of the Woods there are very few places to even get a 200 yard. shot Safely. The woods are just too thick. That is why I said I will only shoo my .243 with 85 grain bullets inside of 75 yards.Heck back on Long Island they poached deer every week with 22's, just for the racks that they were selling. And they did the job.To answer the Question they will kill a deer with good shot placement at that distance. And as with anything else practice makes perfect. Its not a shot for the once a year week end or 1 week deer hunter who only picks up there rifle the weekend before hunting season an goes to sight it in..

Last time I checked they were still green by me 2 wees ago. Might ride around today and check them and the cams out. Have a hand full every morn. with my O's.
