Thanks fellas. This will be my 4th season here and I still haven’t shot a buck in hopes that I can grow some decent ones. Looks like it’s starting to pay off. Ive got a bunch of up and comers and there’s quite a few bucks I still haven’t seen show back up yet if they ever do. It’s fun to watch specific bucks grow. I’d like to give this guy another year to grow but if he wanders too far he’s going to get shot by a neighbor. He went nocturnal last year mid October until 2nd week of November. Was around during the day for about a week and then he went nocturnal again for the rest of the year. Gonna try and get him early before he gets a chance to follow that same pattern again

Will be waiting on this guy October 1st This is him last year as a 10 Now this year he’s gained a point and some decent size. He’s no booner but a nice but for this area.

I believe those are the newest Rage “Trypan” heads. Was just looking at those in Walmart earlier tonight. Look nice but I’m not liking the $50 price tag. I’ve shot rage for the last 10 years but I’m thinking of giving something else a try this year. Haven’t made up my mind on what that will be yet though

This is why I drive trucks and why my wife will only ever transport my kids around in a truck or very big SUV. Other drivers are scary as hell and the chances of someone else causing you or your family bodily injury while traveling is getting greater every day it seems like. Might as well travel around in a big safe vehicle. I think the standards for who gets a license needs to be raised, ALOT. I drove truck for a couple years and I’ve seen more terrible driving than I ever cared to. Every school should have a drivers ed class that’s mandatory and I think there should be some sort of vigorous driving school that’s at least a few months long that needs to be passed before ever getting behind the wheel alone. And all the tech they are putting in vehicles now is a huge distraction. They were so hell bent on cell phones being our biggest worry, HA! Why worry about cell phones so much when I can watch a dvd, pop popcorn, and get a back massage all in the drivers seat.

whats your first date for hunting this fall?
Adkhunter1590 replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in General Hunting
Nice! I’m hoping we get some cooler weather than you experienced. But we already have fishing poles on the list of stuff to bring. Most bear activity is at dusk anyways so I’m thinking if we do a little too much beer drinking one night, we might just spend the morning sleeping in a bit and fishing. Our hopes are not high for tagging out, we are going more for fun than anything. Thinking of trying out a honey burn in the afternoons though. Hike back in a bit setup a burn and let it go the last few hours before dark and see if anything comes in. I’ll take lots of pics and make a thread about it when we get back. [emoji1303] -

Headed north into the ADKs after bear in September. Looking like the 21st we will be headed up. Going up this Sunday to do some scouting and pick out a nice campsite. Should be a good time even if we don’t kill anything. Would like to at least see a bear or two. -
If your tires are just over onto the tail gate, put some blocks in the front and drive the front tires up onto them. Rear tires might clear for the tailgate to close if the front is elevated a bit. Longer the better when it comes to ramps. Steep angles are never fun when loading/unloading. And be sure to strap the ramps to the truck before you load/unload to keep the ramps from kicking out. I’ve seen some injuries and had someone I knew for a long time get killed when the atv flipped on top of him after the ramps kicked out.

I use a Vortex 4x12-42 on my CVA. Probably a bit more scope than a muzzy needs but it was on sale so I snatched it up. Works great with no issues. Vortex is known for a hassle free warranty so that’s a bonus. Have you ever looked into a neoprene scope slip cover vs the flip up caps? I like the neoprene covers because they protect the entire scope from the elements and bumps while walking. Use two zip ties to hold the cover onto the scope and all you do is slip off each end quick when you want to make a shot. Excuse the green paracord used in that pic. I had just got the cover and didn’t have zip ties with me at the time. Zip ties are where the paracord is and looks much better.

Saw this on FB. Thought it was funny enough to share.

Thanks all! His first night went really good. Only a single whimper from him while in his crate. Still extremely calm and relaxed. He’s perfectly content laying on a towel on the living room floor nibbling on some toys. We named him Titan. He’s a big boy and if he’s anything like his father he will be close to around 100 pounds and built like a brick sh*t house. We thought Titan was a fitting name for him. I’m considering investing some money into training for him. Does anyone here have any experience sending dogs off to a trainer? I mostly want him to get the basics down and started on field retrievals. I can hone his field skills but thought about trying out the whole trainer thing to get him started. I’ve always trained my own dogs so I’m not sure where I would send him or how much I should expect to spend.

Picked up a new family member today. I’ve been wanting a English chocolate lab for a long time now and my wife keeps bringing it up about getting one. So she came across some labs online yesterday and we went and picked one up today. My sister had a English chocolate lab that was the best dog ever, hoping this little guy can be close to as good as her dog was. I’ve always liked the English labs temperament and their big blocky features. So far he’s the calmest puppy I’ve ever had, hoping he stays this way haha

Doesn’t have to be governed. You just can’t exceed 25mph while running the AG triangle. -

I knew you’d like a good trailer! I use mine like crazy with my atv. Makes it much more capable. It’s nice being able to carry a bunch of tools and gear all at one time without running back to the truck multiple times to grab more stuff. Glad your liking your new ride! Keep us updated on how it runs for you. -
Got a big bonus check coming in about 2-3 weeks. Thinking I’ll spend a little bit of that on a couple Exodus cams. Maybe try out their newest model the Trek. Buddy of mine has their Lift model and it’s been awesome. Built tough as nails like reconyx but half the price.

I’ve got lots of deer moving around. Starting to see more and more bucks each day. Haven’t seen my big one that I know made it until at least February. Once he dropped his rack it got too hard to tell him apart from the others. Hoping he reappears sometime soon, would like to track his growth progress. If he doesn’t show up in the next week I’ll move a couple cams to try and catch him. Hoping for a good season this year. Haven’t shot a buck on this property in 3 years now. Been letting them go and hoping they learned it was a safe place to be. No out of state hunts planned for this year either so I’ll have 100% of my time focused on home.

The big bores weigh quite a bit more but you’ll still get tire spin regardless. Stock tires on almost every machine out there are junk. Low tread depth and thin ply makes them spin like crazy and get holes very easy. Upgrade to some taller tread tires and you’ll gain a lot of traction that’s useful for those big engines. I think the 1000s are a bit much for the type of terrain we have in NY. If you were out West with more open spaces then ya I can see where a 1000 would fit the bill. My 750 has plenty of power, it will flip you right over backwards if you just stab the throttle. But it makes most of its power down low to mid range which is more useful for work or trail riding. Most 1000s I’ve ridden make more power higher up which serves no purpose for me. All that power is good for some things though. Get a little deeper in the mud than you planned on? That’s alright, whack that throttle and it gets those tires spinning to pull you out. Big tree in the trail? Whack the throttle and lift the front end up and over with ease. I’ve pulled some heavy stuff and the power helps to some degree, but the machine only weighs so much so there’s a limit as to what you can truly pull before losing traction all together. My 750 had plenty of power to pull a Polaris 1000 sportsman back to the truck🤣. -

Nice ride moog! The new canned hams are a lot better than the older ones. Lots of power and features. Also on the pricey side to fix but you kinda figure that to be the case when they retail for so much to begin with. Atvs are crazy useful, I use mine every single day on the farm. Makes feeding/watering animals quick and easy. For hauling stuff around your property I’d suggest looking into a good off road utility trailer for it. They make lots of nice ones these days with high ground clearance and floating axles to handle the rough stuff. Atvs are limited to rack space which runs out quick so a decent trailer is the ticket for getting lots of stuff around like stands, seed and tools. Have fun with your new ride! She’s a beaut! -
I’ve seen winter peas work for others really well and my deer did eat them too, just not with the fury they did on the wheat. Wheat is just so dang easy to get to grow as well, the stuff will grow on a sidewalk with a little rain.
-
I’m in 4H. I planted rye, purple top turnips, winter peas and some other mixed brassica stuff and they preferred to eat the wheat to the ground. Instead of wasting my money on other seed I’ll just give them what they want most.

I’m pumped they are putting a new store in Greenville. Not sure if you saw that or not but I hear it’s going to be a lot better than the glenmont store! I did see a lot of hunting stuff being stocked the other day when I was in there, they had just started opening the boxes so I didn’t get to see all that they had but it was a lot more than they had last year that’s for sure. Can’t wait for the Greenville store to open, I’ll be there everyday! Haha -
I’m going to do straight winter wheat this year. My deer hammered it last year and preferred it over everything else I planted. Plus I can make a few bucks back on it in the summer when my neighbor cuts and bales it. He should be cutting this week, not sure how many bales we will get from it yet but it’s better than nothing. Covers what I need for my animals for the coops and puts a few dollars back in my pocket. Win win! I’ll plant a lot more wheat this year and a lot thicker so I should have even more bales to sell next year. Wasn’t sure how the deer would take to the wheat last year so I only planted about 1/3 of the field in straight wheat and lightly over seeded the rest of the field. Sat in my stand last year watching the deer hang out on the opposite side of the field where the wheat is the entire time. Lesson learned!
