  1. Ok so what did everybody forget to bring this morning that you are now just thinking of waiting for light? Me...I forgot my binos[emoji85]
  2. Here comes first light. Got in stand at 545. Kicked up a deer that was standing under my stand. Been listening to it walk around in the thick stuff behind me ever since. Waiting on you Mr. 11 pointer!
  3. Did the fine even cover the cost of the dna testing?
  4. Archery talk is a great place to buy a good used bow. A lot of good deals to be had on there
  5. They were great bows if they didn’t blow up. I never owned one during those years but had shot buddies who did have them and they were nice. I stuck with Hoyt up until 2015 when I bought my Bowtech. It’s been a great bow and I’m glad I finally got one. Next year I will probably buy a new Bowtech again. I do like their support for the good ol USA and hero’s like Chris Kyle.
  6. It was their compound bows that were blowing limbs apart left and right a few years back. Like 2008-2011 maybe into 2012 as well if I remember right. It’s been a few years since they’ve had any more problems with their limbs. I’m a Bowtech shooter and fan so I’m not trying to bash the company or anything but their reputation took a beating with that whole scenario. Mostly because they let it go on for a number of years in a row before getting a handle on it. But all seems good now in the Bowtech world, I haven’t seen or heard of any mass amount of blown up bowtechs in at least 6 years I’d say.
  7. I’ve had the same thing happen to me on public land before. It sure is scary! Had a buddy even do it to me before. I about ripped his damn head off. Scopes are for shooting not for looking. Binos come in all price ranges and even the cheap ones will let you see good enough at a couple hundred yards
  8. I’m gathering your from western NY based on some of the comments suggestions of other taxis. But my buddy is going through the same thing with a taxi here in the capital district region. Except this taxi has had his deer head for 3 years now!!! And the guy hasn’t answered the last few phone calls over the past couple months. I keep telling my buddy to kiss that head goodbye but he’s trying to remain positive. I have high doubts he will ever see his head after this much time. Sucks when taxis can ruin good memories of your hunts. Good luck to you OP I hope you find a new taxi that can get you taken care of!
  9. I was too young to have a gun in my hands but I still remember the camp life leading up to Monday gun opener. Dad and me would usually head up to camp Thursday and my uncle and grandfather would be there already. We’d do some chores around camp and finish any treestand work on Friday, dad would bow hunt Saturday morning and then they would all get drinking pretty heavy the rest of the weekend. This is where I sharpened my skills with my old .22. They’d toss beer cans off the porch down the hill and I’d shoot them and go pick them all up later. This is also how I learned to drive! There were other camps around and it was like a ritual to drive around and stop at different camps to drink, play cards and shoot the sh*t. Being that my old man and uncle were tuned right up I got the ultimate little boys thrill of learning to drive down the back roads. Sunday morning was always a late one but after getting everyone’s hung over butts going we’d take a ride down to a local sporting goods store and do a little shopping before heading back to camp for a big feast and football on the 2 channel tv. I’m not as old as a lot of you guys on here but I remember the old Monday opener and the days leading up to it as some of the best memories of my life. Unfortunately this is something my boys won’t really get to partake in which is disappointing. Maybe we should petition DEC to change it back? Tell them they can open crossbow oct 1 but move gun back to Monday. That should cover the issue with DEC wanting more deer killed to control population.
  10. If baiting was as big of a cause of CWD as the states make out to be, NY would be over run with it by now. There are WAY more people baiting than most on here would believe. When I pick up chicken feed I always take note of how much deer corn they are going through in the warehouse. In the coming weeks this small feed store will be selling a pallet a day. And now we just got a TSC that opened up last week. I’m sure the locals will be stocking up on all the deer candy TSC has to offer. Personally I don’t see an issue with baiting. It’s happening all around us regardless. Food plotting may not be exactly the same but the goal of pulling deer into a certain area is the same. I grew up watching the old timers feeding all the time and have yet to see any negative side effects of it. That’s over 20 years, if cwd was such a sure thing, why haven’t I seen it yet? And the myth that the big bucks won’t go near bait piles is just that, a myth. I could upload enough picture proof to overload and crash the forum.
  11. Thanks fellas. Sure will be a trip for the ol memory bank. Learned something new while up there. Coleman folding propane grill grates are NOT, I repeat, NOT made of real metal haha! Don’t try and set one over a open fire to burn some burger residue off, otherwise you’ll be like me and melt half of it away in about 45 seconds. It’s my buddies grill, and I’m never gonna hear the end of it about how I burned half his grill grate up while at bear camp haha!
  12. Well we had a good weekend. No bear sightings but had a good time regardless. We did some walking around and found a ton of bear sign and ALOT of deer sign. Thinking of taking another trip back during gun season because of all the sign we saw. Weather was nice and cool, almost down right cold Saturday night and Sunday morning but it felt great. Didn’t take many pics as we had no service and it kills the phones pretty quickly but I snapped a couple of camp and the one river we came to on our walk. O and I can’t forget the part about the DEC officer driving up into our camp at Mach 1 and jumping out like he was busting a illegal poaching operation haha. This officer gets the ninja of the month award for sure. We had a small Bluetooth speaker going with some music and we never heard him pull up at all. I just got done picking a fresh beer from the cooler, crack it open and I turn around to this DEC officer fast walking around the front of his Jeep and walking up next to my buddy who didn’t hear him either. My buddy about jumped out of his skin when the officer says “how’s it going here boys!?” The officer goes on to ask what we are hunting for and even tries to trick us by asking what kind of bait we were using. Asked if we had our licenses and when we all said yes and offered to hand them to him he declined to see them. Once he figured out we were just some regular legal joes he calmed down a bit and went on to tell us that our campsite was his number 1 favorite spot to catch poachers. Then he asked us to give him a call if we heard any gun shots late at night or any other suspicious activity. He told us we were in the best area to be for bear but maybe a couple weeks early but encouraged us to come back in a few weeks for some better hunting action. We thanked him and said we would be back later this fall for some more hunting and he got back in his Jeep and left. Pretty nice guy but man did he scare the crap out of us haha And then on the way out, just before we got back to the paved road we run into 4 state troopers a DEC officer and a paramedic. There was a street bike off on the side of the road and no rider around. Cops are blocking the road so we stop and wait a min and a cop walks up to us and says they are chasing a bunch of street bike riders and one bailed his bike and took off into the woods. Asked us if we saw anyone and we told him no sorry. He got the other cops to move their vehicles and off we went. Pretty crazy end to a fun trip!
  13. I’ll sit on the edge of my food plot just behind the house. It’s where most my deer head towards anyways. And it’s a easy short walk. Also easy to slip up into the tree without spooking anything. I will hunt this spot for most of October to avoid putting much pressure on the woods. Come November I’ll jump around a bit but the food plot always produces good numbers of deer morning and evening.
  14. I live close by and ya those look to be right. We’ve already dipped down into the 40s the other week.
  15. Good to see the cooler weather has them on their feet! Weather forecast looks better for the weekend now. Less rain at least. Only a passing storm tomorrow night. Temps drop into the 30s Saturday night! Woohooo! High of 60 both days also. I’ll take that kinda weather any day. I’m trying to make it through a 10 hour shift tonight then it’s home to finish loading up. Stop over to my buddy’s and pick him up then we are off. I really need to learn to use a extra vacation day for the night before leaving on trips because it’s like torture being here knowing I’m off to go hunting in the morning! Good luck to everyone headed out this weekend after a black Bruin!
  16. I’ve observed the same thing. I use blackhorn 209 and there’s no way anyone could tell me that they can get better accuracy with pellets. I’ve shot tons of different pellets and none compare to blackhorn. I’ve tried to get a couple of my buddies to switch but they act like dealing with loose powder is such a hassle but I don’t see how. It takes one extra step to measure and load into speed loader tubes and your all set.
  17. I’ve been using my muzzy the last couple years during gun season. My CVA wolf is dead accurate and easy to carry so I don’t think of it as being at a disadvantage. Your not supposed to miss the first time anyways so not much need for a follow up round. I’ve left my muzzy loaded in the garage for 3 weeks at a time without any misfire issues. I think the biggest thing is to not bring it inside if it’s cold out where the big temp change can cause condensation and wet the powder. So I just leave it out in the cold garage and it’s been fine. I did pick up a CVA 45-70 single shot this summer for a bear hunt this weekend and I’ll probably use that this year for gun season just because it’s new and I’d like to shoot something with it. And since it’s a single shot it’s not too much different than hunting with the muzzy. But I say go for it with the muzzy this year, a little extra challenge is fun!
  18. Weather is looking nice and cool for the weekend. Looks to be a bit wetter than I’d like though. Doesn’t look like super hard rain so hopefully it’s not so bad. Rain or shine we will be there! My one buddy just picked up 3 kayaks and even a trailer for them to boot. We are gonna tow them up so we can do a little mid day fishing. Wives are making us lots of good food to bring along and we got lots of cold beer. Gonna be a good time no matter what!
  19. I have the Bowtech Carbon Knight. Basically the same as the Icon I believe. It’s been a good bow but it did require a little tuning in the beginning to get it shooting right. I’m not an expert in bow tuning so I take it to a good bow shop and have the owner go through it and then he’s always went out back with me for 20-30 shots to make sure I was good to go. I know he had to adjust my rest a bit and some other things but if you are having some real trouble getting dialed in it’s always good to have a pro look it over. My guy has found lots of little problems on my bows over the years that saved me a lot of headaches. My poundage is at 72-73 pounds last I had it at the bow shop. He cranked it out a few pounds over 70 to help compensate for my string stretch. I’ve shot a lot of arrows in this bow so it’s time for a new one but I didn’t want a new string mid season. With the high poundage these bows will seriously zip some arrows in a hurry. I’ve never chronoed it, but you can see it clear as day it’s hauling a**. I’m flinging the Maxima Blu RZ arrows with 100 grain rage hypos. I’ve killed 5 deer with this combo. It’s a nice treestand bow the way it’s shaped and it’s length, easy to move around at full draw being nice and light. A heavier bow would be much easier to shoot longer ranges, but these light little carbon bows are great for closer range whitetail hunting. Good luck to you this year with your new Bowtech. Once you get it dialed in you’ll be dropping deer no problem.
  20. CVA Scout V2 in 45-70. With a Vortex crossfire 3x9 for glass. Just got done shooting a few mins ago. Ran 20 rounds through it ending with this grouping
  21. A couple buddies and I are going up north the 21st for early bear. This cool weather sure puts me in the mood to be sitting in the woods. Will be sighting in my new bear rifle this afternoon in preparation while it’s so nice out. Saw my breath in the air last night and it put a huge smile on my face!
  22. Thanks fellas. This will be my 4th season here and I still haven’t shot a buck in hopes that I can grow some decent ones. Looks like it’s starting to pay off. Ive got a bunch of up and comers and there’s quite a few bucks I still haven’t seen show back up yet if they ever do. It’s fun to watch specific bucks grow. I’d like to give this guy another year to grow but if he wanders too far he’s going to get shot by a neighbor. He went nocturnal last year mid October until 2nd week of November. Was around during the day for about a week and then he went nocturnal again for the rest of the year. Gonna try and get him early before he gets a chance to follow that same pattern again
