  1. Ditto on the tick spray...Continue scouting, define your food sources and bedding areas...the rest is up to you and a matter of time put in..
  2. Congrats on a great buck! Like the crazy 2 yr old turkeys that run right in on opening morning I file that under... "Things that NEVER happen to me!" Again ..awesome buck
  3. This will all change but its going to take some time.Once we get some new class instructors who grew up using crossbows and its part of there hunting regime. I have found a lot of the current instructors are a little biased towards crossbows and dont really want to cover the topics fully as they were brought up in a state where crossbows were always looked down upon as a poachers tool or not something a serious hunter would use..We hold classes in our shop and I have seen and heard how some people feel about them and dont really want to cover the topic as the words kind of stick in there mouths.I even had someone tell me that "I was an archery instructor and I shot competition..bla.bla..and I could outshoot anyone with my bow vs their crossbow"..BS!!..But like I said in time crossbows in NY will be a non issue probably within the next 5 years..Whatever..go shoot your deer..no big deal..Have fun,,
  4. I think the word challenge is often misused in the hunting world especially when its applied to bow season. The "challenge" in archery is not that it should harder to put a mortal wound on an animal..That should NEVER be the challenge. The difficulty lies in being more in tune with deer and deer habits.Learning how to situate yourself in the woods and getting deer in close is whats fun and challenging..Once a deer is in proper range the ethical and humane shot is then taken...what you take that shot with should not be dictated by an elitist group or persons not completely informed in the other implements.
  5. Are you using the shock collars that come inside the package?..Rage puts them in the dumbest place right up in the top of the package and alot of people dont even know they are in there!..with the collar properly installed they should not open up on their own.
  6. Calling DEC directly will often leave you frustrated and uninformed..Its always best as these people have said to do. Look up in the syllabus for the ECO of the area you plan to hunt and ask him...Hands down best bet.
  7. chuck all that extra S$@%T and get a Summit Open Shot(VERY LIGHT) unless your tipping the scales past 250 (like me) then get a summit goliath if you have good trees..If not then the sticks and hangon is the way to go but honestly I wouldnt pack that in and take it out every time..Big PITA..I have 2 hangon setups on my hunting land put up in very good locations but they are permanent...i just check the gear/straps every year and trim the lanes. Try to pre-scout and look for good trees or a pop up blind is your answer...But I prefer a treestand while bowhunting..
  8. When I married my wife she knew I was a diehard duck hunter and fisherman. Trouble is I keep adding more things to the list..turkey hunting, deer hunting gun ,then deer hunting bow..crossbow..deer hunting muzzleloader..late season grouse / rabbits,..you get the idea..luckily she likes to eat venison and rabbits..But i'm usually always in trouble for something by the end of the season!!
  9. Yupp...Go West young man..nothing to see here...
  10. Thats a very good question that I really dont have an answer for...My first response is to call DEC...but THEY might not know the right answer either...Let me know how that one plays out..also depends on the local ECO I guess
  11. Getting ready is just as much fun as actually doing it! This time of year i'm messing with treestands..checking cams..prepping the duckboats..painting decoys...Shooting the bow.xbow.etc..and surfcasting the beach in the mornings before work...Gotta love it!!
  12. In August we cleared trails and put up 5 new stands (ladders and hang ons) on our new place and cleared shooting lanes. I also finally got the lumber and ran up the hill and elevated my wife's new Shadow Hunter blind.Planned on adding hand rails and rails all around platform but just plain ran out of time..Its huntable for now ..hopefully get most of it done pre-fab down at the cabin and just run it in with the cordless in a few minutes in the afternoon..Other than that the cabin is cleaned and stocked up and the propane tank is filled...Cameras showing some nice animal life..We are READY!!
  13. I have spots on my place that certain scrapes get refreshed by deer year after year. But not all...
  14. In response to your original question I think that most people would feel that the 26th would be too late to go in and start shooting and laying scent on the ground...myself included.. would u screw it up for a doe shot?..probably not...but if you dont see a nice buck out of that stand theres going to be that nagging question in the back of your mind "did I do something here that messed me up?....hmmm............" I would stay out and practice elsewhere..
  15. I'm all for it...I like the apprentice idea..Learning as you grow up..but than wouldnt this effectively remove the need for a special "youth" season?
  16. yeah no we saw it on the site...NO crossbows on LI at all,,, http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/68802.html Darn!!
  17. According to the rulebook crossbows are not legal for deer on LI. BUT nothing says we CANT use them for fall turkey on LI am I correct?..The book says crossbows are legal for turkeys, unprotected game, most smallgame species excluding waterfowl.
  18. Many people dont realize there's way more to this hunting thing than just killing animals......
  19. I feel with in the next 5 years crossbows will be a non issue in NY and allowed during any part of the season...Season's open....choose your weapon!
  20. my son was just fishing there last week said he saw some nice bucks,,, but you cant hunt there!
  21. Plus if anyone bothers to participate in the early season and shoot a few does all that's going to do is give the bucks 2 weeks worth of human scent / gut piles on the ground and put them on alert and make it even harder to take a nice buck on DEC property.
