Chops to be busted and plans to be made...
Dinsdale replied to moog5050's topic in General Chit Chat
Lets set something up around Albany ?, not too far a drive from Hudson Valley, points West and North.....lots of members in the region too. Need to pick a date and just stick with it; trying to get a consensus for meet ups is like herding cats on forums re. dates. -
FWIW I shot a buck missing a good portion of one ear that was caused by tic damage (Vet and DEC biologist happen to look at it). Most infested deer I have seen; although have seen worse in other parts of the world.

The proper way to Break in a Rifle barrel?
Dinsdale replied to LET EM GROW's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
I'm in mowins' camp......shoot 3 and clean for a box. Can't hurt and really is no big inconvenience to me. -
Watched a dog take down a deer today
Dinsdale replied to The_Real_TCIII's topic in General Chit Chat
My pit rescue was a dumped dog out in the boonies and someone left a shepard on my property with a note taped into the collar. Happens around here more than one would think. -
That original testing on the link here was also on 24hr crapfire and that guy used to post a bunch of stuff like that before the usual bunch of village idiots who congregate there ran him off.

Achievement-oriented Motivations for Deer Hunting
Dinsdale replied to goosifer's topic in Deer Hunting
Thanks for posting; I fit their study group back when I started so found paper interesting. -
I totally agree with this! Poking around on a few forums opened some opportunities to learn from others who have been there and done that...hope this could do the same. Go chase some dreams!

Trophy on CNN @ 9 tonight. What did you think of it
Dinsdale replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
Philip is taking some heat on a few forums, where emphasis is on African hunting, over the Elephant hunt and no finishing shots. Personally I put a head shot in mine that was clearly dead and 2 in the Buffalo in my avatar that was clearly dead. I don't think the situation was handled that great, but hunting can be messy in the moment and easy to see mistakes in hind sight. You have to get me to STOP shooting, I make it clear on hunts I will take as many as I can as long as we can identify proper target animal. Americans often have a reputation of admiring the one shot and not working an action to reload and staying on target. That becomes easier with experience; I'm breaking bones and not worrying about meat as a non recovered animal will yield nothing. Anyway the croc dude is a douche and there are a pile of shitty operators who do this kind of thing unfortunately. For those who would like to read more response from Philip Glass about the movie you can follow 2 threads on AfricanHunting.com as he has been a member for some time; This start way back before CNN even bought the film from the producers/directors....but end up in current time after the CNN airing; https://www.africahunting.com/threads/trophy-the-film.34748/ One started by the one of the Directors; https://www.africahunting.com/threads/trophy-the-film-let-your-voice-be-heard.37142/ -
Have fun planning. Far from an expert but have poked around SA a bit here and there and if I can lend any help I'll try. Hunted East Cape, Kwazulu Natal, Limpopo......visited J'berg, Port Elizabeth,Dulstroom,Kruger,Sabi Sands, Battlefields, Jozini Dam areas a bit before and after hunts. Haven't hit Cape Town but maybe next trip (most likely in 2020 also). Cleared my own guns, hired a service, layed over and flown on; lots of choices.

Ironic I hate to drive but can sit in a plane for 14+ hrs. I still get the shakes too, I think I will stop if that ends. So I'm hunting a big Kudu in Northern Namibia with this guy and we've been on him all day in 100* heat. Finally work him up in a big kopje that the whole side is volley ball sized rocks for a 100 yards under the thick brush. As we work through trying to move quiet we get a glimpse of this bull here and there climbing ahead of us. I open the bolt and slide one into the chamber and sure we are going to get a shot. PH glimpses this and is OK and we take a step. He puts his hand back on my leg and we stop dead in our tracks. Slowly he takes a few steps to our left and starts to back out. I'm thinking WTF? Kudu is calm, and I'm going to get a great shot here on a bull we have seen a few times over a week and haven't even come close to him. At the bottom he says, "glad you loaded your gun when that snake came out." Stupid American (that'd be me),"Huh?" "Ya, did you see the size of that Mamba? I figured you could hit it at that range, had to be 3 meters long" "Uhh? What snake, I was looking at that Kudu wondering why in the hell we weren't pressing home a stalk" "Well, maybe I'll carry my rifle tomorrow" in one of those laughs where you are actually serious but trying to make like no big deal. Quiet drive on the way back to camp. Shot that Kudu on the otherside of that kopje the next afternoon in some thick stuff out on the flat; found a really cool shed skin of a massive Mamba too not a few yards away. I think it meant, stay the hell off my hill.

Impressive for sure. What I really need is just someone to watch my bag when I use the john in the airport; biggest PIA of travelling alone on long flights and layovers. On the other hand don't be too quick to volunteer; my track record for finding camp mates ain't very good. Extended the offer to a few folks to cover the cost on a few plains game off my quota as I often get a free observer thrown in that can do some hunting; they have to pay airfare and incidentals.....haven't had a taker yet. I'm pretty sure it must be me. Although last 2 trips had others folks in camp hunting and we got along well; loaned my PH for a few stalks when they were struggling with the buffoon they hired; and the last guy was head of Nosler sales and was interesting guy to talk to, took his buddy Baboon hunting with us and got his first animal hunted with my rifle as a loaner. Drilled a big male. Always got room for one more.

Trophy on CNN @ 9 tonight. What did you think of it
Dinsdale replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
I think of hunting in Africa like many here think of Whitetails.....I love everything about it, the travel, sights, smells, food, wildlife, and all the awesome folks I have met along the way......but it pains me to think others will take away the low points. Love to show folks the places I have been and seen and honest hard work it takes to hunt it proper; and how that keeps it going. -
No snow in my woods either and went for a walk with dog today and found just a doe skull. Congrats on the pair; never found any sets, just one side here and there over the years; good stuff.

Trophy---CNN film--Sunday 9pm
Dinsdale replied to Drew2255's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Philip Glass is one of the hunters in the film (takes a free range Lion). -
Ya...but its just another 3d shoot in a warehouse since they moved it to one of the riding arenas in the new section. The hockey rink made it "different", JMO. There seems to be a lot better room for vendors there, as that arena was always jammed packed to get through and see anything. Helped out for some exhibitors through the years for 5-6 days; can't imagine having to be there for all of them in a booth.
-
Have booked a few fishing trips there and connected with a couple of hunting folks over the years. NRA takeover of management has done a good job updating a few things. At the same time miss watching the 3d guys shooting up into the arena stands at targets.

How many types of game animals have you hunted in your life
Dinsdale replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
In my late 30's I set a goal to hunt on all 6 continents for something by 50; big game;small game;birds; I'm running a few years behind but next year I'll finish that (hopefully) with an Asian trip (most likely Ibex or Tur) In between been a bit distracted with hunting Southern Africa and have more than a few months on the ground visiting and hunting. I'll add......Hunters who can successfully take and have the skills to hunt Whitetail deer have my utmost respect and admiration. The guys and gals who can hunt up a deer on unknown property from scratch are top notch in my book -

Its a few. -
I used to think that too..... Went to get a new Customs form for a rifle this past year. Now, according to laws, there should be no record kept re. NICS etc by any Federal agency. They do run the serial number for stolen through a data base when one has the form done. Not only did Customs officer knew I took that rifle out of country in 2006(and where), she asked why i wanted a new form for ownership as she new I already had one approved in 2005! (new law for destination required a more recent date for import paperwork). Wonder where all them NICS checks are being stored. LOL

In the end I think a good chunk of mil dot buyers just use the method you are suggesting; no hard evidence, just from chatting to other hunters who own a few. FWIW hunt with a FFP scope with a TDS reticle and the first cross bar down from center happens to correspond to one mil-dot (although subsequent are based on a parabolic formula) and it shoots basically the way you are explaining. I'm pretty decent at ranging with it and have shot a few critters to 500 yds with it, most coyote sized or there about. Always prefer closer, but sometimes terrain and animal just don't allow it, and I'm not talking just Whitetail deer here. But sometimes its the indian and not the arrow......took a broadside shot on a very nice trophy indeed at 300 yds and clean missed on a hunt a few years ago. Crappy shooting position, feet way higher than head shooting across a valley, not enough front rest, small animal, maybe 60lbs. Eh, I relive that shot for the last 2 years everytime I have picked up a rifle. Ironic that a few days later made a similar shot at a few more yds on a different bedded animal half hidden in some brush. Miss still bothers me, although better than a goat rope and wounded animal.

Great NYS Dove Hunting News!!
Dinsdale replied to Lawdwaz's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
I can do better than that.... They come up with airfare and their own flats of shells; I'll buy a high volume hunt @ SCI for a party of 4 and pay for the trip part. Did a ridiculous 3 day red eye flights to Uruguay shoot some years ago and had a hell of a fun time. -
Lincoln AC 225amp/ DC 125amp Arc Welder. Hobby used; upgraded to another machine and selling this one, works great. Northern Dutchess $380 cash/firm

Most Fridays, the guy I work with and I go out to lunch; where just depends on job site location. Typical its the Millbrook/Stanfordville area although now we've been north of Pine Plains for a spell. So we rotate around where we go close to the job. And to stay on topic I had -8 last night.
-
Eat there for lunch a fair amount, but have never had a pizza; place is packed when I go by there in the evenings on way home. Don't care for the pizza place in Stanfordville by the town hall.
