  1. Good stuff.......making memories with the Sako.
  2. I've shot quite a few animals with a rifle and other than a couple of 3 or 5 shot groups here and there, I practice everything just like I'm going to hunt. Off different rests, standing/ kneeling/prone, reloads. Also a fan of simple dry fire practice. On a recent hunt I took several offhand shots to 150yds and hitting 2" steel targets at 50-100 yds for practice gave good confidence for the longer shots.
  3. I think what someone is telling you is the Federal regulations for interstate transport; Here is actual code from here;https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/926A Note the last lines depending on if there is a separate compartment. DON'T go by anything NRA-ILA puts out on the web many factual errors and their info is junk. I would use the regs posted above for NY DEC. 18 U.S. Code § 926A - Interstate transportation of firearms US Code Notes Authorities (CFR) prev | next Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment thefirearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console. (Added Pub. L. 99–360, § 1(a), July 8, 1986, 100 Stat. 766.)
  4. Just from my experience some teeth drop out easier dry and some will pull wet; its just like the nerve cavity you are trying to get at......sometimes a deep cavity, others not so much. I had one skull I tried and tried to get them out and all the sudden one day they just fell out. But I have dumped peroxide up into horn cores that can't get the sheath off that had some odor and that cleaned them up. Mounted on an oak leave plaque similar to these, as I shot a decent boar in Europe; https://www.frankonia-b2b.com/en/products/hunting-accessories/other/c.html I'm on newer laptop and can't get pics off old PC so don't have pics at hand or I'd post one.
  5. FWIW..... Some pigs tusks can be amazingly long into the jaw, its more like they rotate out of the socket along their curvature then pull . Personally I'd never use chlorine bleach on any skull, hydrogen peroxide is more effective to whiten and easier on the bone. The wild tusks I have were cut out of the jaw, but I have a few other swine tusks that took some effort but did eventually dry enough to pull. If it were me I'd go to a pool supply place and buy a gallon of hydrogen peroxide there and dilute it one part peroxide to 2 parts water and let that get down in there. This stuff is VERY strong, not even close to the stuff you buy in drug store, be careful working with it; serious rubber gloves and eye protection. It will fizz and clean out any tissue left in there and rinse. Other option is have a beetle guy have at it and let the bugs get in there; lots of those skull guys around. JMO
  6. Best thread on here, enjoy the updates.
  7. Hunt with the Great Plains in a Remington 700 MZ with 100 grains of Pyrodex with good results. Taken more than a few deer as I retired the slug gun and hunted just with MZ for 10 years or so, don't always get great expansion.
  8. Congrats on the deer.... Looking forward to report from the grandson this season.
  9. I knew you would notice that, sorry.
  10. Not a zoo but here's two youngins' for you to practice on and the one is really ready to go!
  11. Yes, the form work used is in the backround; the legs are in the slab and permanent. About 400 lbs
  12. I posted the tuskless here to prove a point how hypocritical hunters are and I know I will be "attacked" for it. Why is it OK to shoot a doe deer, but not provide a starving population a months worth of protein AND the financial benefits to have jobs in an area that could be rife with poaching, but is not because I'm hunting here. Hunters will eat their own faster than a lion. LOL I'm not pretending a thing, thats a mature animal about 20-24 years old by tooth aging for the area..... Enjoy the deer season
  13. Brief chance at internet, more to follow next week. Zimbabwe is not only hot (near 100*); the hunting is smoking too! Working hard and crew is top notch. Gun and ammo have been perfect. Best hunt ever? Might be, also dropped warthog this morning and several days left to go. Baiting Hyena and off to check for action.....
  14. Airport Craft Brewing sampler in Johannesburg, SA. Liked the Red, Porter, and Cider especially, British IPA just didn't do a thing for me.
  15. Don't touch bows.... Tinker a bit with rifles, want to do more and was hoping to have my dad sell me his metal lathe since much of the tooling I put together; but he won't let it go. Threaded and chambered a barrel, drilled a tapped a few; enough to get my feet wet. +1 on Youtube vids, one can find it all. I'm interested in building a falling block action from scratch, and that maybe my next thing I mess with; looking for a mill and have some tooling. But I don't want that to be a project in itself, so trying to find something decent to start.
  16. I know someone already running successful program in New Paltz area and he's a really good guy that I'm sure could steer you in right direction..... Tom Mihalics @ 845 256 8450 http://newpaltzrodandgun.org/youth-program/
  17. 108* today where I'm hunting Oct 1, (Zambezi Valley).....and I won't be sitting, expecting 10+ miles each day. Looking like high 90's all next week.
  18. The more I get to hunt in a t-shirt; the less I like hunting in cold.
  19. Its a womans' right..... Oh wait, I think that's change her mind.
  20. Pygmy mounts a Schmidt & Bender pmii 5-25x 56 on his bow and you're on.
  21. Cancelling safari trip ASAP; can use trophy fee funds for this. You in?
  22. OK.... Now just issue an order for USF&W to stop meddling in my legally taken trophies.
