  1. In the process of building a raised box blind, base will be ~10 feet off the ground, 4x6. Nothing super crazy, just trying to make it tight against squirrels and the elements. It seems like 39" is about right for the windows? Maybe a shade lower? Anybody have some experience with this? They're fold up plexiglass windows, 10" H x 24" W. I was thinking make them a little on the lower side to be safe? Using 2x6's to make shelfes right underneath them, which will be braced. Probably keep a sand bag in there too. Any advice is appreciated!
  2. I second this motion. I'm teetering on the edge of doing my first real plot this year, and wondering what to plant that will bring them in post-rut. Got the tractor, got the land, even have an acre spot brush hogged and surrounded by scrub brush.
  3. This thread is EXCELLENT, must have missed it last year. This will be a thing for me, in probably 13 years or so. I've read everything Capstick ever published, this is way up on the top of my bucket list. Kids are too young to go away for a week for a while unfortunately.
  4. It's a water snake. They can climb trees too !
  5. Turns out those little poults can fly already! Was watching them pop up into the tree to get at the berries there. Which makes sense, doubt they'd want to spend a night on the ground.
  6. Yep. Back yard, two times a day like clockwork. They cruise under my big fruit and pick up the berries the squirrels and the cedar waxwings drop.
  7. That is scarily close to what I would answer, same gun, maybe a touch closer on the yardage, but freehand.
  8. Scope isn't bad, definitely tell the difference when I pick up my VX 2 though! Need to try out some different rounds in it, not quite dime shooting at 100 yards yet. Not bad though! I like the tension pull on the American trigger. So far so good! Just need a coyote or a Chuck in my sights now!
  9. Yeah this. The trick is not to pull, but twist them and they lose their grip. Tick twisters work great. Edit :. I use this one, spin it around a dozen times and they come right off. https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/tick-twister
  10. Yep. Hard to not kill them. Saw a water snake climbing one of my pines in the front yard on Saturday. Had to be 4 feet long. Took an act of will not to grab the Mossberg and grease it.
  11. Sounds like I'll just wait 2 years until the little blonde monster is in a booster seat, and get an under seat bin. Was looking at the overhead racks, but I don't think people on the state campus, particularly since I park next to the Homeland security guys, would appreciate that.
  12. My siggy is in the trucks built in safe! Seen 3 coyotes since turkey season started. Can barely hit a target at 25, nevermind 100!
  13. Anyone have something they use that keeps a long gun locked, out of sight and out of the way that doesn't require flipping up the bench seats? Problem : I can't pop the bench seat up in my Silverado Crew Cab, on account of the 2 car seats. If I could I'd definitely get an under seat storage safe. Would love a safe that opens horizontally from underneath the bench, but the only thing I've seen is 1000$+. But I want to keep the Ruger in the truck. I keep far too much junk (tow cables, jumper cables, treestand bag, spare coat, 4 way lug wrench, spare gloves, tow hitch, etc.) in the truck under the seat.
  14. Sounds familiar, except replace 22 with 12 gauge pump!
  15. I giggled. Too late to change now! Thanks fellas.
  16. Feel like my 6 year old is still a couple years too young to learn. When I thought about it I honestly cannot remember how old I was. I remember being turned loose with a crossman pump BB gun, and shooting a single shot .22 with my cousins, but not how old. Couldn't have been much older than 8? What about you party people?
  17. Really appreciate the feedback guys! You fellas with Simmons, did you uses the rings that it came with, if not what did you use? Reviews I've read say the rings are..... Not great.
  18. Thanks guys. If the simmons winds up being a PoC I'll do the Nikon. Told myself this would be a Year of the Gun for me. Spent the last few years being a good boy and getting my overhead down, this year my wish list is long! Hopefully early fall will be Bergara B14 HMR + VX2 time. This ought to hold me over til then
  19. Simmons 511039 3 - 9 x 32mm .22 Mag(R) Matte Black Riflescope https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000KOSB34/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_1s04Cb14F1XXS Seems about right for a 300$ rifle?
  20. Probably going to buy one sometime this week. Anybody have a scope recommendation? Might be a truck gun, probably wind up teaching kids (and wife) to shoot with it too.
  21. I love having a worthy adversary for the spring. This bird is super spooky, and wary. I think the only way we're going to get him is teamwork. He caught me going in at 445 this morning (stupid moon) from a roost in big oak directly over the field he struts in. Then I played with him from 6 to 730 in the hard woods. He gobbles his head off but sets up in spots where I can't sneak on him. Always 80 yards away. Next weekend me and the one armed bandit will try a roundabout walk / setup with a shooter 70 yards in front of the caller. I have only myself to blame for educating him opening day. Though even then this bird feels wary. Might be one of the jakes my buddy shot at last year. He's not really a trophy yet, but he's game!
  22. Got a Jake for my buddy, was a good morning. Edit : Did not mention it was his first bird ever, but it was!
