Anyone hunt with a Browning Automatic Rifle
Buckmaster7600 replied to eagle rider's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
If your looking at the BARS do yourself a favor and look into a Benelli R1! I own both and the r1's are a much better gun, if you can get over the God awful appearance of them. -
I have no problem with long barrels on rifles that's why they make hack saws, it's alot easier to cut off extra than to add some on!

A short action 270 imo would never make it what would it be able to do that 7mm-08 or a 260 couldn't, not that being said if someone would make one I would buy it because I like to have all of them. Now what I would like to see is a 7mm super short mag like they did with the 243 but with .280 diameter at something that would shoot 2800fps with a120 in a 223 sized action!

What Do You Think Your Effective Range Is?
Buckmaster7600 replied to DirtTime's topic in Bow Hunting
It is an awesome way to train I'll often shoot in between sets while lifting as well. -
Now this thread is right up my ally as I can't own a rifle that I don't take a hack saw to the barrel of I have a lot of 16.5 in barreled rifles from 223's to 300wsm the loss in velocities are minimal although they do get louder! I have shot my 30-06 over a crono with a 16.5" tube that shot around 2650fps with a 180 gn bullet I'll have to look in my notes for the powder I was using.and my 300sm with a 16.5" barrel was at 2875ish with some factory Winchester 165's. The way I see it is if I cut 4"-6" off a barrel I step down 1 cartridge in velocities so my -06 becomes a 308 my 270 becomes a 7mm-08ish my 300 becomes a -06. My favorite shortie that I have built is a ticca t3 I rebarrled to 35whelen and I sighted it in with the barrel still at 24" and cut it to 16.5" and at 200 yards I lost 1 inch in elevation not bad for a lot handier rifle.

If you take pressure of your string it will tell you where it was. If u have a bow press that is the easiest you can also use 2 screw drivers and a buddy "draw your bow have your helper put screw drivers through the holde in your cam let off slowly until the screw drivers are on your limbs."

No brainer my old savage 30-30 over 20ga! I always call it a "sh** hit the fan gun" but it really is one of the best 1 gun solutions I could think of. The downfall is although it can do anything it does none of them well.

Any news on this?

So I wonder how that 2 week kill only doe is working out

What would the "best weekend of the year" that we traded be? -
The most effective fall turkey hunting method is to find birds and put yourself in between where they are and where they are going. A fall turkey has no reason to come to a call unless the Glock has been broken up.

What Do You Think Your Effective Range Is?
Buckmaster7600 replied to DirtTime's topic in Bow Hunting
If your effective range is 20yds awesome, if yours is 80 good for you! I am glad that many of you have the self control to only shoot out to "X" distance wether it is your personal limit your equipments limit or what ever else that's awesome and that tells me that you have put in the time necessary to being successful. I would much rather a hunter who shoots thousands of arrows a year shoot a deer at 60yds when conditions allow as to the dirtbags that shoot 30 arrows or less in a year shooting a deer at 15yds. Proficiency is the key here fellas! Practice is what counts and not all practice is good practice. Standing in your back yard in a t shirt shooting a 3d target over and over does little to no good. You have to "train how you fight" everyday when I go for my run I hang my bow on my porch and as soon as I get back I shoot 5or6 arrows in "sniper school we called these stress drills" try this sometime it's a lot of fun timing a shot in between panting. I shoot more arrows in the month of February than any other hunter I know does in a year. I have and will shoot deer at distances doubling some of your max ranges. I still would prefer every shot I take to be 15 yds but I am not willing to wait for that shot opportunity. And for all the guys worried about set ups my bow shoots 314fps with a 527gn total arrow, I don't lack kinetic energy. I can honestly say that my effective range with my compound is double that of my weapon of choice for all my stand hunting during gun season "a Glock 20." -

10 years ago when season opened on the 15th in southern zone most of you would have been excited about the 15 or 16 extra days now everyone's complaining. If NY wanted to fix the issue have a doe only muzzleloader weekend just like Ohio does its in the middle of October. NY would never do this because of the man power it would take to properly oversee it and at least put out enough of a presence to make a hunter think about shooting a buck during those days. -
Is it the Cva?

Awesome! Is that a Cva scout?

@50yds I would question 410 slugs penetration after going through a deers ribs. Once again I think my point was missed by some, I was kind of joking with my original comment on the only a .40 diameter bullet remark. The diameter of a 410 is not the problem it is mass and density issue. I only wish I could get 1800 fps with a 180gn hard cast from my 10mm "also a .40 diameter bullet." I have very little experience with a 410 slug actually my only experience on game was a coyote that I shot at 15yds with my judge he was quartering at me and I hit his front shoulder and he required another shot. I did cut him open to find the slug because it did not exit and the bullet never made it into the vitals. Now I am well aware that the velocity from a 4" barrel is most likely 5or600 fps slower than a shotgun barrel but the slug still did not stay intact even at the meager velocities from my pistol.

If you like that law look into ohio's trespassing laws!
-
I guess my point was missed. I was simply referring to the "it's still a 40cal gun" part of the post . I also thinks it's a gross exaggeration to say "a 410 will kill any deer close "50yds" because I don't think a 410 slug is making it through a whitetails shoulder.
-
Oh I understand the deficiencies of a 410 I was just stating that a .410 diameter projectile is much larger than most deer cartridges.

I think i am just going to hunt this year
Buckmaster7600 replied to ApexerER's topic in Deer Hunting
The cover scent sprays always baffled me. Nothing is odorless, deer are not born knowing what humans smell like. So if every hunter uses "cover scent" guess what humans smell like. -
I'm confused by the "it's only a .40caliber gun"part? I would not hunt deer with a 410 but I bet excluding muzeloaders and shotguns that 99% of deer killed with firearms in ny are shot with smaller than .40 diameter projectiles.

Not having to guess or feel where the trigger is as to knowing where it is. If your finger is on top of the shaft touching the string as you are aiming you start sliding you finger off the shaft on the trigger side. I continue through until the shot is fired. I was taught this a long time ago when I was shooting a lot of 3d and developed a bit of a flinch and have been doing it for the last 20 years or so. I hope this makes sense?
-
If you are tucking your finger behind the trigger then brining it around or over the trigger your flirting with disaster as you well know! What I have learned with a wrist strap release is to make a fist excluding trigger finger and draw with Trigger finger touching the string or draw loop. If that makes any sense?
