Deer camp for me consists of everyone meeting at the 24h Dunkin donuts, maybe lunch at the diner and home for dinner....
-
Beautiful deer congrats. I was never fortunate enough to kill a buck while my dad was still hunting so cherish that memory.
-
I haven't had a sit yet this year where I haven't had a deer inside 20 yds. I won't shoot a doe with fawns which rules out pretty much every doe I see. We have a 6pt or better rule on our lease and I had numerous sits I had small bucks inside 20 yds. I get excited when I see any deer and then I determine almost immediately they aren't a shooter, I relax and watch them, range them, go over in my head when I could stand up, sometimes I do to try to get away with the movement. Basically I practice everything but the shot but I am calm and cool as a cucumber because I know I am never going to take the shot. When I see a deer I know I am going to shoot I lose it. Sunday that buck caught me off guard, when I saw him all I saw was antlers. I was an immediate basket case. I tried to calm myself down and actually did a fairly good job of everything right up to taking the shot which I totally rushed, pulled, peaked and possibly not even aimed. It was pathetic.
-
While that sounds easy to do, I really struggle with it. I shake like a leaf at the site of any deer that I intend to shoot and don't stop shaking for a while after the encounter. Even after it is long gone or dead. I have shot dozens of squirrels. I haven't hunted them in years because there is really nothing exciting to me about shooting a squirrel so I am not sure how that would help me with buck fever. I am a very good shot when shooting at paper, clays, cans, squirrels even the few coyote I have shot. For some reason a deer that I intend to shoot makes me come unglued. The funny thing is, it is also the same thing that makes me continue to hunt deer and I hope I never lose that feeling, I just need to figure out how to control it so that I don't blow it in the moment.
-
I feel the opposite. I feel like if I have time I can get myself under control and walk myself through it. The times it happens fast and I feel like I need to get it done right then I screw up. Yesterday that buck was at 35 yds (actually 37) in my head he was at the max range I was comfortable taking the shot and quartering away from me. He was on a mission ( fast walk). I got him stopped but rushed everything after that anyway. I don't want the "fever" to go away but when I got it I rush it. Frustrating
-
I can count on one hand the number of "good" bucks I have seen while hunting and I have killed two of them.
-
I have had an issue with Buck Fever since I started hunting almost 30 years ago now. I thought I was getting better at controlling it but I totally blew it yesterday. This isn't a feeling I ever want to go away, its the reason I hunt. I am worried about wounding an animal because I can't control my emotions. I feel like if everything is slow and developing I have gotten to the point where I can control myself and make a great shot. When it happens fast, I proved I can still blow it. Yesterday at a little after 3 I had a buck come in from behind me on my left. I didn't see him till he was at my 9 oclock. I saw him and it seemed like in a span of about 20 seconds I said to myself holy crap, that's the wide white horned 8, got my crossbow on the shooting rail, found him in the scope, figured he went behind a scrub bush that I know is 30 yds, figured he was 35 yds, found him in the right reticle (between 30 and 40) looked out of the scope and gave him a mahhhh….and he stopped dead. After that my memory is all blurry. I dont' remember finding him again in the scope, I am sure I peaked at the shot or maybe I wasn't even looking through the scope when I shot, maybe I squeezed the trigger when I stopped him. I know I watched my bolt fly right under him. I am still so mad at myself, I kept my composure about half way and threw it all out the window at the most critical part. This might have been my biggest deer ever, I do have a really nice 9 pt that is my avatar but this was a really nice deer. For sure my largest archery deer and if you guys have read posts, I don't see deer like that every day. I am so glad I didn't wound him. That would have been way way worse but if I can't get this under control with archery gear, I feel like that could happen. I could have easily shot him in the @ss....

When I didn't bow hunt the guys would tell me about that mornings like that. I started bow hunting I think 5 years ago now and have been lucky enough to catch a couple of days in the woods like that. Glad you finally decided to pick up a bow TF. It really is remarkable what you see this time of year. I don't hate gun season but I sure don't look forward to it like I used too.- 10374 replies

Live from the office. It is killing me that I shot under that Beauty yesterday. Going over it in my head and I just plain old blew it. Rushed everything. Buck fever strikes me again. Trying to be thankful that it was a clean miss and I didn't wound him. It all happened so fast so keep that in mind while you are out there today. It can happen any moment! Until that happened I was going to be content to wait for the gun opener on Saturday but now I am thinking I might take a day this week and get back out there one more time with the crossbow.- 10374 replies

Catching up on the thread and some of you guys are ridiculous. I mean who really cares if you say a deer is however old why do you have to agree or disagree, Just say nice deer...Many other examples of arguing back and forth over nonsense, not just age. I feel like all you guys are my hunting buddies and pull for all of you but man, sometimes this place is like nursery school.- 10374 replies

So messed up I posted this under bone head moves. I guess it belongs there too. Ugggggg. Just shot under the wide white horned 8. Idk what I did. Figured 35 yds... he was 37. Shot right under him. I was shaking like crazy. I think plane old buck fever got to me. Idk if I used the wrong reticle in the excitement or what. I am thinking now peaked also. Basically probably did everything wrong....ugggggg- 10374 replies

Been in since 6am. Lone fawn so far. Stupid question but do fawns breed or do they need a year? Seems like a perfect morning here in 4k but pretty quiet so far. Good luck everyone!- 10374 replies

Always cold!? What’s everyone wearing ?
ApexerER replied to fadetoblack188's topic in General Hunting
I feel like I have bought so many different things to try and stay warm. I still get cold. I have 2000 gram thinsalate boots with thermocells. Merino wool socks. Bottom layer I wear under armor if real cold then I wear fleece pants then my browning pants with wind shear. On top I wear under armor, cabellas heated vest, fleece top, then a heavy coat with hood. Winter hat...sometimes a neckie and my hood up. I am still cold when trying to sit still. If it is really really cold I have coveralls that I wear over all that other stuff. I just don't think its possible for me to stay warm when so inactive. I go snowmobiling wearing 1/10 that stuff in much colder temps and I am never cold. Well that's not true either...its hard to stay warm up in Canada when it is -30F -
Range finders, what do you recommend?
ApexerER replied to Bionic's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I have a simmons that I got used off of Ebay like 5 years ago for 30 bucks. I have never even put batteries in it. It is about the cheapest range finder you can buy new (I have seen them at Walmart)and it seems to work perfectly fine for bow ranges. I have ranged farther things as well but never compared with another range finder for accuracy. I would think anyone you purchase would be fine for bow ranges. -
I see tons of 1.5 year old deer. I have seen 8 different 1.5 year old bucks so far this season. I have yet to see a buck that is older than 1.5 This seems to be the pattern for me most years on our lease. Lots of little bucks...no shooters. I know there are shooters there from a few trail camera pictures and the fact that all the 1.5 year old bucks that we passed on the lease last year have to be somewhere.
