  1. x1000. Its not even December and I have plowed at work 4 times. Sick of it already and haven't even gone snowmobiling yet. To me a perfect winter would be snow from Lake George North and Sacandaga Lake west and north and nothing in the capital region. Plenty of snow to go visit...none to deal with...
  2. My Dad tells a story about one of the old timers in camp killing a spike horn with a rock. It had been gutshot and was stumbling through. I don't remember why he didn't have a gun during the encounter. I should ask him the story again.
  3. Crap, I actually forgot about my crossbow doe and I need to call in the buck. Thanks for the reminder. I too have forgotten about calling before and have reported way late. They just say thanks for calling.....
  4. Love the old pictures and stories....thanks for sharing
  5. I would love to do something like that someday. Looks like an awesome trip and well worth blowing off opening day here in NY.
  6. I am a little late to the party but those slugs are fine. Those Brenekes were top of the line around 1988 or so.... Also the old Winchester super X slugs had a red plastic case that you couldn't see through.
  7. Lol...those are our signs. There is an ATV trail that enters there. We make sure you can't miss them.
  8. Idk. I was thinking about it and was wondering if I hit him good the first time and the 2nd shot was the not as good one. The first shot should have been perfect. I am not sure which was which but the more I think about it I think the first was the good one and the second dropped him.
  9. No. I hit him. Somehow farther back then I was aiming. Made a nice mess for gutting.
  10. So this morning I decided I was going to sit in "my" stand since i haven't been seeing much of anything since gun started. For the first time this year we had some corn and beans on the opposite side of the lease so i had concentrated most of my time closer to the food. This was leading to tons of deer being seen during bow but as soon as rifle started the deer I was seeing dwindle to almost nothing. So about 8:30 I am once again seeing nothing and I am thinking about how much i miss bow. Out of nowhere I catch movement in the ravine and see a deer then quickly realize there are two. The 2nd deer is a buck and as I find him in the scope I am trying to determine if he is a shooter. ( self imposed 6 or better lease rules) I see he has 2 on each side and catch a brow tine also and decide I am taking the shot when I can. He moves to a spot where i have a nice slightly 1/4 away and squeeze the trigger. He doesn't flinch so i shoot again with my autoloader and down he goes. Was pleased to see he was a small 8 when i got to him. My 3rd biggest deer...all from the same stand. Super happy to have him.

  12. Back at it in 4k. 34 degrees feels warm. Quiet morning other than the trees dripping. Hopefully I'll at least see a deer today.
  13. Been in the stand since 6:15. Nothing moving. I haven't seen squat since gun opened.
  14. That's awesome! Took my daughter a bunch of times when she was younger (13 now) and we could never see a deer. I knew if I could just get her to see one she would be hooked. She went about 5 times a year for 3 or 4 years and I would swear those were the only sits where I just couldn't see a deer if my life depended on it. It was almost like fate was telling me she isn't going to be a hunter. She has no interest in going now which disappoints me but I am not going to push her....
  15. Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving! I didn't post yesterday while on the stand. It was too cold. I was in a little after 6. My plan was to try and make it until 9. I got a text at 8 saying we are all freezing heading to the truck and may put on a small drive or two. I was fine with that. I was so bundled up that unless a deer was right in front of me I was probably not going to see it. We did two small drives. Two of the guys shot deer that they thought were doe and wound up being small spikes. Annoying but I understand you don't have a lot of time to make decisions on drives. One was a young hunter and it was his first deer so that was awesome. I was on my way home for Thanksgiving by 10:30-11am and didn't freeze to death.
  16. The only chasing I saw was the last week of bow. Both times were small spike horns chasing individual doe and grunting up a storm. The rest of bow season I saw small bucks and doe together but they had no interest in anything other than the corn field.
  17. Welcome, sounds like you have some beautiful property to hunt. I don't ever see myself being a position where I am passing up a nice 2.5 year old buck. Sounds like you have a lot of knowledge. Look forward to your posts....
  18. Who is going to brave the cold in the morning? I have hunted Thanksgiving morning for about 20 years now but tomorrow is supposed to be brutal. News said -12 windchill in Albany so I can't imagine it won't be colder in 4k. I can't stay warm when it is 20 and a slight breeze. Sent a text to the guys. Didn't want to be the only idiot at DD in the morning and go out and freeze to death by myself. I am going to give it a shot. I hope I can make it until 9am.
