In three months we'll have the five year anniversary of this thread. Some didn't like the thread, but they're gone now, so they didn't really matter anyway. It's been a lot of fun, and it always makes my mouth water. Start thinking about the bestest and most favorite recipe and/or foodie photo you've grabbed or seen here. Just to be clear, there will be no prizes given for this competition unless someone invites me to dinner. Just kidding about dinner. There will be no prizes at all.

A Sad Message From My Senator
philoshop replied to Steve D's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
People with rural or even exurban lives and lifestyles are much more difficult to influence and control. And people in cities can't even target practice in their back yards, so that's an added bonus. Always keep in mind that the primary goal of a Leftist is control. They want the power to tell others how to live. They have zero interest in making the country better in any way. They just want to control it. Watch closely any of the idiots currently queuing for the 2020 race. Out of the mouths of every one of them what you'll hear every couple of sentences is, 'This is what you should do as a voter, and this is how you should all live.' They're not even trying to hide it any more. They've become very open and bold about it since Bernie opened that door. Now it's all the rage and the kids love it. I find it terrifying. -
My interest is in why they feel compelled to "suck". What motivates people to be so selfish and inconsiderate? Children are expected to be selfish and inconsiderate. It's basically their job when they're toddlers. Why do some people never outgrow that mentality?

A Sad Message From My Senator
philoshop replied to Steve D's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
My elderly parents don't want to leave just yet. I'll stay for them. Theyv'e stuck with me for 60 years, so I'll stick with them. OTOH, their granddaughters just moved to SC and the married one is looking forward to her own family. That might be a game-changer for the whole family. There's no turmoil, but I sense the flux capacitor is working hard here. I'll do what's necessary to take care of my folks wherever they go. The nieces and the kids will be fine. -
I'm very close to being out of firewood. I can hang for maybe two more weeks. I'm also just sick and tired of feeding the woodstove.

I drove my mini-van work truck to Lexington Kentucky towing a Wells Cargo work trailer in 2007. You forget that it's even back there because the thing tows like an absolute dream and it honestly scared me every time I looked in the rearview mirror. I had several WTF moments during that trip. Especially around Cincinnati. Shortly after that trip to Kentucky I was carrying three race Karts stacked up in that same van back from a local event and had some pickup dude actually bump me from behind at 55 MPH. Again it was a rural road. He was being cute and actually tapped my bumper before he passed me. I was exhausted from a day of racing and thought that the speed limit was a good thing for me. Those Karts run on alcohol, BTW, pretty explosive stuff. And the top kart behind me was going to take my head off if I had to stop quickly. Just don't be stupid while driving. You don't know what the person in front of you is carrying. If it's safe to pass, then pass. If I can pull over and let you pass I'll do so, but your life and your sense of urgency is not more important or more valuable than mine.

Revisiting the 25-06 Remington
philoshop replied to airedale's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
25-06 is a sweet round that's very easy to work with and very easy to work up accurate rounds for. Other than the "great bears", maybe, I'd carry it for anything in North America. I carry a .243 that has never failed to kill a deer, fox, or woodchuck that I've ever pointed it at. -
All the best to you fellow HNY'er. have a great day.

It's just a bit shocking to look in your rearview mirror and only see a windshield. No bumper or hood in sight. Just windshield. That's pretty close at sixty mph when I don't know what your skill level is. At least when racing the skills and attention levels are pretty well comparable. You fully expect to have people bumping you from behind. It means that you're ahead . ;-) On the open road you have no idea if the person behind you just spilled hot coffee in their lap, or are trying to apply lipstick and mascara, or if they're having a heart attack, or they're just not paying attention. That's disconcerting.

Nope. I've been wondering about that for decades.

"I'M IN A HURRY AND IT'S YOUR FAULT!" There's the explanation.
-
Like I said, I've spent most of my life racing some sort of vehicle or other. I understand drafting and bumping. You don't do that on a public highway. It's stupid and it's dangerous. You wait until winter and hitch a ride from the bumper so you can slide down the icy road on your shoes. Duh!! Is this not taught in schools any more? This jackwang behind me today took the cake, though. Tried to pass on the left and couldn't because of traffic. Tried to pass on the right and found out things can get squirrely over there with the gravel and, well, the dead squirrels and possums. Two minutes later I turned down the road toward my house. His/her horn honked and I returned the finger gesture. Lack of basic civility. I'm not on the public roads to race with people. I'm also not driving 30mph in a 55 zone.

Hitler Hunts in NY and Visits the Forum
philoshop replied to ELMER J. FUDD's topic in General Chit Chat
I've just watched it twice after the first time five years ago. Funny as he!! And kudos to whoever put it together. Big hat tip. -
I've raced cars, motorcycles, karts and even tractors during my lifetime. But I have no idea why someone would want to be less than 10 feet from my rear bumper on a rural road when I'm going 60 mph. If someone can explain that mentality to me I'd really appreciate it.

WTB - fixed 4x leupold scope
philoshop replied to moog5050's topic in Hunting Items For Sale and Trade
I have several 2x Leopolds on shotguns and handguns but they're all mounted and ready to go. I wouldn't part with any of them. The 4x is getting to be kind of a rare bird from what I understand. Maybe that's the attraction, but it's never seemed like a good choice to me. A good old 2x is clear as can be, and if you can't find the target in the 2x you're not likely going to find it in the 4x. Just my 2 cents. -
Apparently failure is not only an option now, it's becoming mandatory.

Or the guy who broke 2 fishing rods accidentally closing his truck door on them. No names here.

Time for another GTG in Geneva. April okay? Or wait for the end of turkey season so everyone has more stories and lies to tell? Memorial day is the big lake trout derby. I've never fished the derby, but I occasionally go to watch the weigh-ins.

I wish I were closer. You guys are a hoot!

My now-deceased neighbor survived an attempt at a gun-grab simply because his daughter was managing his bank accounts. He just didn't want to be bothered with the hassle when the garden needed attention so he handed his finances off to his daughter. 84 year old Korean war vet being brow-beaten by bureaucrats. It was shameful. The guy lived through the Chosin Reservoir campaign for cryin' out loud. I don't imagine there are more than three or four people on the planet who can make that claim today, and most would likely be Korean.

I haven't smoked pot in 40 years, but if the people in power want your guns they'll find a way to come and get them. If you don't have a few million dollars lying around with which to defend yourself your guns will be confiscated. Period, and end of story. That's the way it works. The best defense against this sort of tyranny is to have friends inside the various local police agencies who will give you a heads-up if required. I have one such friend just up the hill from me. I do the maintenance on his lawn tractor every Spring while I drink his beer, and he and his husband (yep, he's gay) invite me to their awesome summer clambakes where cops outnumber civilians at least 2 to 1 and everyone is carrying. Networking and making valuable contacts. I have friends in the Sheriff's departments all around me, in the local police department, and in the State Police. Chances are good that I'll know about any confiscation attempt before the people who are sent to my house even hear about it.

They do have a flair for the overly-dramatic to the point of comedy. I believe It's a sign of being irrational, dense and obtuse. Very much like the people screaming at the sky when Clinton lost the election.

It's not just about the money. I built furniture, guitars, canoes and kayaks for a long time. I didn't build anything for, or sell anything to, people I considered 'unworthy' of my efforts. I certainly could have sold a lot more stuff had I been less discriminating in that way. I wanted my stuff to go to people who would appreciate my work. Color, gender, and all that nonsense never, ever, came into play. I discriminated based entirely on people's attitudes towards me and my work. Play the a**hole card and I won't sell you the boat. Pretty simple. Sorry for the rant.
