I miss going to Anacone's Inn for hand-carved roast beef sandwiches. "I'd like two, please."

Cuomo cancelled my insurance for gun theft
philoshop replied to Rattler's topic in General Chit Chat
I don't have my pocket copy of the Constitution immediately available. It might be in the truck. To paraphrase: The individual states are given powers to make laws that are not expressly given to the Federal Government. The entire document was about limiting Federal power over the States. If a State decides that it's citizens should not be armed, they have the right to pursue that avenue, and the citizens have the right to reject it at the ballot box. The U.S. Constitution does not limit State's rights. It was designed to limit the power of the Federal Government. -
Glad it worked out for you. No WII for me but I have an auto racing simulator to sell. Cockpit, pedals, force-back steering, PS2, and a monitor... I used it for practice when I was racing. It absolutely helped. I don't race any more, but somebody could have fun with it.

Knife Sharpening ?
philoshop replied to UpStateRedNeck's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I inherited the sharpening steel and strop that my grandfather used when butchering. It's about a hundred years old, from Germany, and will put an edge on anything. Once in a while the angle needs to be reground with a machine, but mostly it's a couple of strokes on the steel and a brush on the strop. -

I hate to pee on anyone's cheerios here but the U.S. Constitution says that the States can make gun laws as they see fit, including things like the SAFE Act. On the flip side, we as individuals are all still at liberty to leave this state to find a less oppressive regime. There are two options: Leave NYS; or vote out the people who are making NYS intolerable. -

I no longer have any guns other than the two shotguns and the pistol currently within arms' reach. However, I have boxes of parts that might just fit together if necessary. -
That looks great! I'm very happy you have a nice place that makes you happy. Life is short. Grab every bit of it that you can.

When the goal is to "create criminals", this becomes clear. That's exactly what this is about. "Criminals" are easily controlled. Free citizens, not so much. Whether its owning a gun, buying an extra-large soda, using a plastic straw, or selling single cigarettes the intent is control. Freedom vs serfdom.

I have to assume you mean a face cord (I hope) rather than a full cord. A full cord would seem like a lot for a 1200 SF house this early in the season even if you have zero insulation and really crappy windows. Please tell me you're talking about a third of a cord (called a cord in some places) and not a full cord.

Parts of October were pretty decent, but I've been burning off and on since mid September. Earliest I've ever fired up the stove. I have plenty of wood for the stove this year, but I've never burned so much so early. It's depressing to watch the stacks go away before the real cold hits in January and February. I thought we were supposed to be warming.

It's really frightening when you can't get up. I've been in that situation 4 or 5 times over the last two years, and I'm only 59 YO. The docs don't seem to know why. One time was in the southbound lane of Rte 14 on the way back from my mailbox. It's a busy road during the day. I did a face plant in the road, banged up my face and broke my glasses, and had a truck driver stop traffic and help me get up and get back onto my property. The last time was just a couple of months ago when I went out on my porch to see if it was raining. I looked up at the sky and the next thing I knew I was falling. I landed on a bunch of 5-gal buckets full of kindling wood and cracked a few ribs. It took me a half hour to get up, and the cracked rib pain hadn't even set in.

Lots of water with sea salt seems to help with the cramps. I used to get them in my hands and fingers during the summer doing construction work. It's debilitating and stops your day for a while. Like you say there's just too much sugar in sports drinks like gatorade. Stay hydrated, no matter what you're doing. As we get older that seems to become even more critical.

If you ever run out of animal figures to carve, do a sculpture of your chainsaw. That would be pretty cool. I definitely think differently from most folks.

Love both the story and the sculpture!!!

I seem to remember her saying that she was mildly dyslexic, Paula. If I'm wrong, my apologies to everyone for the misleading information.

I came back to NY from Louisiana through that area on my motorcycle in the 1970's. Spent a couple of days hiking and camping. It's very pretty country.

Riots in France over high taxes
philoshop replied to Hunter007's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
The one thing that Hillary Clinton proved in 2016 is that you can't ignore "flyover country". It starts just west of Albany and continues to Los Angeles county. We vote, and there are a bunch of us. Welcome President Trump! -
I can honestly say that I don't know a single cop, fire-fighter, or EMT who would side with the Leftists on anything. A handful of military people I know would side that way, but they're office people. Important to the effort from a logistics standpoint, but they're not warriors. I'm not sure who these "civil warriors" think is going to protect them.

Riots in France over high taxes
philoshop replied to Hunter007's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
The mass immigration of essentially unfit people into the country is definitely an issue. But the root cause of this particular uprising is the fuel taxes being levied against the working class citizens in an attempt to control their fuel usage, and therefore their contribution to "climate change". WTF? This uprising is not comprised of a bunch of disgruntled kids like the Antifa crowd who don't know anything about anything. It's very much middle-aged and middle-income people who have just been pushed too far by the Socialist and PC agendas. I'm surprised it's taken the citizens this long to fight back. Then again, they're French. Sorry. -

I remember Bosnia-Herzogovina really well. The snipers taking out civilians. Turns out the citizens weren't nearly as unarmed as the government thought they were. That turned into a mess. I have a friend currently in France who emailed just last night with some updated information. Guns are basically illegal in the hands of private citizens in France without special permits, but almost everyone he's met admits to owning at least one. Mostly shotguns stuck in the back of a closet in the bedroom. This could end very badly. -

Macron is the EU version of Justin Trudeau. They both need to just find boyfriends they can cuddle with and leave the people and economies of their countries alone. -
I had one guy close-by who sold it, but he retired from the butcher business. Your best bet is probably getting the fattiest pork products you can find from a local butcher and trimming off the meat. Amish and Mennonite folks will sell it to you if you can find them locally.

I have no reason to doubt that Wildcat. Tree names can be very location-specific. Terminology regarding firewood, in general, can be very location-specific. There's a guy not too far from me advertising, "A cord of seasoned fire-wood for 75 dollars." Of course I called to see what he had. It turned out to be what is commonly known around here as a "face cord", which is one-third of a cord. And "seasoned" meant he cut it last weekend and will split it before he brings it over. I honestly don't think the guy is even a scammer. He just doesn't know. Hedge Apple, Hedge, Osage Orange, it doesn't really matter. The people I know who deal with it tend to call it the "chain-wrecker". Sparks fly when you put a chainsaw to it.

My condolences, mowin. I know first-hand that it's not easy.

I don't know what happened to Stoneam. Probably just busy with life. That happens. Growalot got fed up with people here picking on her for being dyslexic. An absolutely pathetic personal attack IMO, and wrong in every way. Growie knows as much, or more, about food plots and wildlife habitat than most anyone on this site. She is missed. Come back Growie, we miss you. Elmo posts pretty frequently on the "what's for dinner" post, and when he buys a new gun.
