Best "Gun" Movie (Not a War Movie)
PREDATE replied to wildcat junkie's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions

You could try to break it in by just making long sweeps til you find the sweet spot. Any chance it could've gotten wet or oily. I suggest you get less aggressive paper and sand in a cross pattern Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk

Did you sand the striker too? I've sanded my call with a dry rock before when I forgot my paper Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk

Best "Gun" Movie (Not a War Movie)

Josey Wales toted a Colt 1861 Navy, 2 Colt 1846 Walkers, a Colt 1848 pocket dragoon, and a Sharps 1865 sniper rifle. Another good movie that featured a Sharps rifle was Quigley Down Under, but Tom Sellecks Sharps rifle was a 1874 model Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk -
As a trapper I have had no other choice but to thump a few cats due to them fighting the trap so hard that their feet were barely attached. I got no enjoyment from it and luckily none of the ones I dispatched had collars. I like watching cats hunt and usually lip squeak a few in during bow season. If they're not affecting me directly then they are free to hunt along side me, but I'd rip the throat out of a dog if challenged. I lead the pack! Last fall I was challenged by 2 feral dogs while out musky fishing. They were about 8" from getting my big musky bait attached to their face via treble hook. Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk

Lawdwaz has it right, a little sewing to a pelt is normally expected. Let me tell you, undergunning for predators is very frustrating given all the hard work it takes to even just get a shot at one. The .223 is a safe bet and I don't think you'd regret owning a .204ruger either Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk

Pygmy, I have never put my hands on a .17hmr, but I can honestly say that I would never shoot at a coyote with one past 50yds.(just too light) Now my brothers .17WSM on the other hand has put down a number of coyotes over 100yds. I like the .22mag because a vital shot(heart/lungs) within 100yds will put a hurt on a coyote if a headshot isn't an option and I have yet to have a fox take a step from a .22mag hit. One tip; snow covered ground is your friend when coyote hunting with a rimfire Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk

My .22mag is a Marlin 25mn with the micro-groove barrel and it pretty much loves any ammo I feed it. I can pluck eyeballs @ 100yds all day. The forementioned .17WSM is superior past 100yds, but inside 100 the .22mag still reigns supreme due to heavier bullet offerings. Just an FYI for those if you that still think it's "rimfire only" during any open deer season. The regs were revised to include any centerfire round SMALLER than .22cal. A few include the .17 fireball, .17hornet and one that is quickly making a name for itself among predator hunters; the .204Ruger. Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk

First time coyote hunting
PREDATE replied to fadetoblack188's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
The more of the coyotes senses you can appeal to the better. If you're hunting daytime, a decoy and even a luring scent can pay off. Your calling is what initially strikes their interest, but if they can visually lock onto a decoy then they will likely come right in(if they don't catch your scent first). They will move in the daytime, but they like to stick to the thick/brushy areas to hunt. So my tip is to hunt in/adjacent to thick spots. Remember, they WILL smell you if you're not mindful of the wind direction. They'll also smell your boot tracks, so try to plan your entry if you know the area you'll be hunting. Good luck Sent from my LGL34C using Tapatalk -
32.5lbs I had one come running in today that had to be pushing 60lbs. This thing was huge! It even had sort of a mane like a wolf would and I could hear his foot falls on the pine duff. If I wasn't toting the muzzleloader I'd have poked a shot at it

In what region are you looking for a class? If it were not opening morning I would ask that question on NYTrappers for you, but there's no reason you cant join the site and ask. Good luck
-
I have inlaws who live/hunt there(Baudendistel Rd). They're always getting nice deer & bear
-
welcome! I too love to forage for wild edibles & fungi. I also find and collect Iroquois artifacts/projectile points. May I ask what region of NY you are in?
-
Yep. Mine is Fire On The Mountain by The Marshall Tucker Band
-
I'd hang it above you where it is visible from all directions

Are you talking about opening day of SZ gun season? If so, this is peak rutting time for the bucks so they will be cruising around 24/7. Get in early (1/2 hour before first light). Set up your blind. Hang your orange vest/flag. Settle in and watch the woods come to life!

I'm jealous! It doesn't look like I'll have time to do any trapping this year. Real nice critters guys, keep it up

I've never been crazy about full bore muzzleloading projectiles, but if you want to stick to using them I will suggest you check out Thor bullets. Thors are 100% copper and are supposedly superior to Hornady and powerbelt because the 100% copper will not fragment. I have never and never will load a powerbelt. Ever. Saboted bullets are the way to go(if your twist can stabilize them). I just found my new muzzy bullet last weekend, 250gr. Hornady monoflex. They shoot great out of my Remington 700ML

I hunt both and both have their perks, however hunting in the boonies is best in my opinion
-
Nah I never hunted there, but I do hunt between Hancock and Deposit. I'm sure Lordville isn't that bad of a place
-
haha I've been to lordville a few times, came across a few pretty strange characters too. and I thought Binghamton was bad
-
That sucks bud. Right now scents could be your friend. Hope you get one
-
heading in. I haven't hunted in 2 weeks so this is long overdue, but well worth waiting for. Shoot em up guys!

That's nary a harry. LolA deer has a natural fear of humans. If they run, the light has little to do with it. The naysayers should be thanking the people who slow down or pull over to look. We're keeping them on their toes and away from the road, so you're welcome! I just found a sweet deal on spotlights! Guess what I'm giving as Christmas gifts!!!!!!
