I say you can pass on the young buck early to give yourself a chance to see a bigger buck... even if you would shoot him on the last day. Maybe for some guys the fun is in letting them walk in search of something better. I had a guy ask me once at a seminar I did... "How do I kill a big buck?? The first buck I usually see is small and after I kill him I don't have a buck tag" I almost busted out laughing. I asked him if he REALLY wanted to kill a big buck. He said..."More than anything!" Again, I almost busted out a laugh. I said.. "Try not shooting the first buck.. unless it's a big buck!" Then he laughed. Ya just can't fix stupid..

The "idiot" thing has been going on since the beginning of hunting... there will always be poachers, hunters that shoot at movement, the guy that steals your deer, hunts on posted property, doesn't follow up on his shot... Unfortunately, it's just the human condition.. All we can do is lobby for the things that are good for deerhunting and for the hunting experience in general and hope for the best... and continue to do our part as responsible hunters that give a S#*t.

Isn't that a hoot.. that guys will argue that safety is somehow a twist. Instead of thinking it's a good arguement for AR.. even if you aren't an AR guy it still makes sense!! And yes, there is never an excuse for mistaking a human for a deer! Nobody I know looks anything like the deer I've seen. Ok, a people with big ears, but still not like a deer

The problem is not with the length of the gun season, but the amount of deer being allowed in the overall season... as well as with the number of young bucks being taken.
-
shortening the season is not the answer..

Another good point TJ!

Very nice looking mount.. he did a nice job.

Small game is much more fun to do with the buddies... A buddy of mine and I go rabbit and squirrel hunting with our recurves with blunt tip arrows... its a riot..

Not surprised that many trophy hunters would think this way. With more hunters in the woods the odds of that big buck being shot by someone else are better too. That is surely something many trophy hunters wouldn't want most of all! LOL I myself like hunting with a partner. Can sure make things easier when an extra hand is needed, and it's just nicer having someone along for the 3 hour drive to get to my hunting spot among other things. I am just a guy that likes hunting bigger bucks, ... I just don't get a charge out of shooting small bucks... plus I hunt alone when hunting does (for meat) as well, does that mean I'm a trophy meat hunter? ... If you enjoy hunting with a buddy thats great! But I find it hard to track deer or still hunt with a buddy. If I do hunt "with" a buddy (which I do on occasions during bow season) it is usually without a weapon and with a camera to film his hunt. When I get a nice buck and need help, I can always call a buddy to come help..that's never been an issue. By the way, I travel with friends to hunt all the time.. we just don't hunt "together" when we get where we're going.. we go in different directions miles apart and hunt alone, then meet up at dark back at the vehicle. I always get a kick out of being called a trophy hunter like it's a bad thing...

Very good point Steve.. never thought of that one.

How about the size of that buck???

I have seen more deer out earlier in the evening.. and I mean a lot of deer... no big bucks yet.. but plenty of does and smaller bucks feeding in the early afternoon -
I can understand the no doe thing when hunting for a good buck.. I do the same during the regular season.. I save my doe tags for the muzzleloader. I believe that if you want to kill a good buck you have to focus on just that.. I'm sure that is his thought as well.

Hunting alone is actually the most productive way to hunt.. especially when hunting bigger bucks... too many guys in the woods is a sure way to alert the deer in the area. I guess if you hunt from a stand then you might want guys walking around pushing deer. I have been hunting alone for about 15 years now and have taken 10 bucks that score 100-155 in those years. Before that I was lucky to see a buck..

In my view probably one of the best camos out there... even breaks up sillouette against the sky... most realtree and mossy oak don't do that! -

The question needs to be rational before anyone can give a rational answer...

Larry I live literally around the corner from the swamp and have heard of a few nice bucks being taken there, but man ! what a tough place to hunt. I think I know as many guys that have gotten lost over night in the swamp as have taken bucks there..lol
-
back in the late 1990's there was a record 300 bucks entered into the Big Buck Club one year. I think that was a record year, but I will bet this year will be close. I have been with the big buck club for about 15 years now and can't remember this many Huge B&C bucks being taken in one year.

So, your answer to the thread question would be ... that it IS hard to pass up a yearling buck? Just wondering if you passed up any does before you killed the 3-point?
-
Great plan - 7j and 7h would be overrun with deer in a very short time. : In NY the hunting seasons are for herd management - not so everyone can see 50 deer every hunt. As well as other regions of NY as well.. Remember fellas, if you think there is a problem with depletion of deer in your area... don't fill all your tags and do your part to bring back the herd...just and idea
-
Thank you Troutman and I respect the fact that you may disagree with my philosophy.. I understand that everyone isn't in to the whole management idea, but at least some you listen without spouting crap trying to debunk any management ideas. And yes... what a beautiful animal this buck is.
-
Update: The buck was killed by Dave Edwards in Scott, NY... gross score 205, net score 185 B&C. Looks like it's this years biggest typical in NY.
-
I don't know where people get the idea that the deer herd is being depleted. If some of the hunters think thats happening maybe they can help by not filling there tags each year.
