Started out with a Rem 7600 in 30-06 'cause Aagaard liked the '06 and the Benoits sold me on the pump. I actually bought if from a Benoit up in VT one vacation day, they had open up a small shop. It was in the rack, brand new but it was his gun, a cousin or something. He had it set up with their trademark peep sight. But it had the std. 22" bbl. I went with a VxII 1-4 on it for a while but it ruined the carry. Never did get that gun cut down to 18 1/2". Still grab it when I get serious or the weather turns bad. While I have a load of others now, custom 7x57 mauser bolt, huge 475 turnbull lever, a short .308 and a black bear in 338 fed, 30-30's and many, many more, it's the 7600 that seems part of me, guess 'cause my first real gun was the 'ole wingmaster!

Our prayers go out to you and your family.

I reload even though for our hunting most factory ammo is sufficient. The bullets I like are Woodleighs. They expand a lot and hold together great. The last load I took a deer with was a 200 gr Woodleigh out of a .338 federal, it ran about 2700fps. I hit him as he turned up hill. Into one shoulder, through the spine and lodged under the skin on the flank. Dropped like a rock. Frankly, I was very surprised the bullet didn't exit, but it expanded over 2x dia. and weighed 178.9grs.

Last election, Mr. Cuomo won reelection by carrying new york city and it's 5 boroughs along with a few up state cities like Albany, Buffalo, etc. He LOST almost all up state counties and still got reelected. And we suffer. If he cannot get the legislature to approve a law he wants, he uses executive action to have regulatory agencies "criminalize" the same thing, often retroactively. Yes, he can make retroactive regulations to punish people when he cannot get the legislature to make retroactive laws. Yes, you can leave, but upstate NY is one of the most beautiful areas of New England and a wonderful place to live. But I am at that point, having again been punished with his retroactive regulations, that leaving the state I love (countryside, the most beautiful coastline in NE on LI, and frankly some of the easiest and most extensive hunting around) may be a necessity. Its a shame that the coagulated citidodts living in their sardine can like existences can rule and control the lives of all the rest of us.

Bugsnbows, Yes I was aware of SWFA but they do not carry the 3post reticle I like, need to special order, but thanks. The listed 2.5x's seem great, but lack the tube length for a std length bolt action and still be able to mount far to the rear for my lop/eye relief. Thanks airdale! Hey, I have almost the exact same pic of me next to my racing go-cart from the early 80's, mustache and all!! Remember the "Pic" we used to tease our hair out like that!! Keep mine pretty much buzzed now as well, well what I have left. Barber uses #1 clipper in the summer and #'s 2 or 3 in late fall/winter depending on temps! Thanks guys for the 3x experience based advice, I keep looking through my vari's set at 3 and seem to come up the same. Still a great looking gun and great rig. Bet it would do as well or better even today at putting 'em down than any rifle at under 100 yards.
-
Great rig. Bye the bye, how do you find the 3x fixed? I am looking at the Leupold custom shop 3x fixed because it has a long tube and no power ring to interfere with my bolt's handle. I think it's FXII based technology. It will be $399 + $50 for the reticle change. Was 3x ever too much magnification for a close shot? Again, great rig! Thanks for showing it to us.

and if you don't muzzleload hunt, you get an extra 10 days post regular season as well. Sorry guys, didn't mean to indicate you all were complaining. Just find it funny when someone gets upset or perhaps surprised that they have to pay a little extra for such a great value. Guess some people just have an aversion to paying a gov't. entity state or otherwise anything when they spend 10x that for gear. Unfortunately, hunting like driving in this state is a privilege not a right. So, yes we have to pay to play.
-
Craps guys, for $30 your complaining? You spend more than that on gas getting to your sites! and the MacDonalds and coffee every morning as well!
-
NO!, the regs specifically state that laminating your license will destroy it.
-
I got tags for where I applied, 4F and 1C. But not where I wanted, 40. When I lost my farm I lost my landowner status and now it takes 3 years of accumulating preference points before I can hope to get a dmp in 40. Just can see waiting that long. I have the bow/muzz tags if I need a doe in 40 (during the appropriate bow/muzz seasons of course!!)
-
Got my doe permits over at the town hall, but only because I wanted to pick up a hard copy of the new regulations booklet. Found using the online site very easy in the past, both for getting licenses and reporting takes.

I purchased a Leupold Vari-xII 1-4x for my wingmaster decades ago. Had it on a cantilever mount for deer hunting on LI. It now resides on a 8 lb .375 H&H with no problems and hundreds of rounds for the last decade. One tough scope. 1x is great for close woods hunting and 4x is all I'll ever need even with the 235's at 2800+fps.
-
No cul, I was just thinking out loud, er.. on paper. But yes that could be it or based off the orig. .375 weatherby case?
-
Maybe he is talking about going in the other direction. A .358 based magnum necked down to .30 cal.? Or a big 300 magnum like a Weatherby necked up to .358? I see Weatherby just came up with some new .264 super magnum to trump the 26 nosler.
-
Oh Heck!, Go ahead. It's just plain FUN having something new and different! If we were worried about the paper or on game ballistics, no new cartridges would ever take off. And like you said, you reload and already have the gun and brass. It's just a rebore on the tikka and some custom dies. Good luck and keep us informed!! Jaeger and oh yeah, HAVE FUN!!

Question about hunting with licensed tracking dogs in the Northern zone
Jaeger replied to Padre86's topic in General Hunting
I have not read all the subsequent posts as most of it would be conjecture. I also have a tracking license. So here it is: It's the difference between hunting and tracking. In the first instance you are hunting and cannot be accompanied by a dog. After a shot and no recovery, our tracking licenses allow us to use our dog to track the wounded animal according to our Tracking License criteria. The guide you quoted is the Hunting guide and those regulations apply to Hunting. When you are tracking your wounded animal, our tracking regulations apply. So NO you cannot have your dog with you while hunting but can go back to camp and get him to perform tracking according to your tracking license. -
Targets?!,.......................... Sorry!! Got an overabundance of the stuff myself.

I think we need to get a definitive update on this topic as I was going to buy a rare 1851 navy through GI and checked with my local FFL dealer. He indicated that now all these ML revolvers come under FFL transfers and have to be listed on my permit regardless of whether I have the means to fire them. Some other FFL dealers have told me the same thing. I guess I should ask my pistol permit licensing officer since he is the one I am responsible to and can direct and other officer to.

Rounded leaves belong to the white oak family, sweeter than the red or black oak family with thier pointed leaves and leaf intersections. The red/black oak's are more acidic.
-
I am in the process of getting this clarified. I was going to purchase a BP Pistol, a Colt 1851 Navy, on line and my FFL said that the state is now requiring it to be on you permit regardless of whether you have the loading components or not. I did not go ahead with it.

Great dogs Paula! Schatz goes crazy over rabbits, once she is on one bird hunting is done, but I don't mind. She gets so excited she runs right past them, can anyone say bunny exit stage right! The Beagle club on LI out in Mannorville died out a few decades ago, but they seem or another owner seems to be reenergizing it, looked cleaned out the the training trails neatly cut when I was down on the Island last fall. Wish you the best of luck with Bones and Chesters training. Jaeger

From the sounds of your posts, I'm assuming (risky!!) that you all aclimated your dogs to the collars properly so they did not become collar wise and tested their minimum reaction stimulation levels. For the newcomer, you can't just put an e-collar (read "TRAINING") collar on a dog and start zapping them, it defeats the purpose and makes them collar wise(they know it's the collar bothering them). It takes time and patience to properly acclimate the dog to the collar, there is a wealth of information on how to do it, Garmin/Tri-tronic has some on line and in books. It is a shame when someone ruins a good dog by misuse or misunderstanding of their e-collars.

Cool Grampy!! Wish you were closer or I could travel, Schatzie (5 1/2 yr. old Drahthaar) would love to have had you help train us. Schatz and I haven't had the opportunity to even try to track a real blood trail tho' she is good on mock trails.. Everyone up here seems to drop 'em at their feet or within 30-50 yards. Have you kept your license up? I think they are on a 5 year renewal nowadays.

I went to the Sportsmans show in Uniondale long island back in the 80's and attended a Peter Fiducia (sp?) clinic where he claimed he could drive into the deer woods in a limo, wearing tux and tails and blare classical music and draw deer in. Don't know if its true, never had the cash to find out!! Deer are just very curious creatures if they are not previously spooked, even then, they have a very short attention span/memory. JMO

The Browning Bird-n-lite vests use fastex buckles on the backpack, waist and chest straps and snaps on the pockets. No velcro. I think the upland vests work better because they are designed for hunters who are constantly on their feet and on the move, they are moving vests. Not just packs to carry stuff from car to stand.
