Over many decades of hunting, I've found Nov 10th to be the "magic day". With the five days before and after, to be the best time in the deer woods. Those 11 days are when you are likely to see bucks standing out in the open. Or cruising with their noses to the ground. Or crossing a road without looking. And running after any doe they see, throwing caution to the wind. Regardless of what moon it is, or any other environmental factors, that is the same time, year after year, that the above observations are seen. And of course, at any time from mid October, to the middle of December, all it takes is a hot doe to cause a local flurry of rut activity. So spend as much time in the deer woods as you can. Plan accordingly.

WI Tall Tine Tubers plot 3 weeks in
grampy replied to UpStateRedNeck's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Definitely after the first hard frost, the turnips become "sweeter" to the deer. And they will hit them harder. After the first good snow, or if snow gets deep, set up close, as they will be all over that plot. Nice work! -
Cool pictures Larry! Is there a nearby woodlot, or are they hiking a good ways? Did he do a fly down cackle as he left his "roost"???
-
Great pic's! Great bucks! Great plots! You got it going........GREAT.........out there! I too am a 4-H hunter. And enjoy seeing what others are seeing. Along with talking to other hunters. We'll have to have another coffee meet up to compare notes!

Absolutely right Tacks! Only a real crummy team would do such a thing!!!
-
Nice! Looking great Matt! And sounds like the shooting will be up to snuff too. With the mild winter we had on the hill, there seems to be plenty of deer! Hoping to see some blood on a couple of those arrows my friend!

You should. He's arguably the best player in baseball right now. He'd really look spectacular in pin stripes!

Judge goes long against the Sawx! Him and Stanton are on fire! Let's Go Yankees!!!!

Some cool stuff! And the price can't be beat!

A brushed in ground or hub blind, set up just inside the thick stuff, with a wind advantage, would make for a close shot, to where the deer want to go on their own. I always find that letting the deer go where THEY want to go, is better than trying to DRAW them to a spot, you WANT them to go. We never had much success with decoys, and did give them a fair try a few years ago. And doe decoys did seem to work a bit better than buck decoys. As the buck decoys always seemed to spook deer. And if they didn't spook, the deer just ignored the decoy completely. I know using decoys works great for other hunters in other places. But not so much for us on our hunting land. But it was worth a try!

New hunter hoping to still-hunt the Catskills this season
grampy replied to BKowal's topic in Introductions
Welcome to HuntingNY !! You came to the right place to get help, starting deer hunting. Many experienced hunters here who will be happy to help get you going! Still hunting, is a skill that takes practice. It involves SLOWLY making your way through an area, trying to see deer before they see you. Sounds easy enough right? So much involved with still hunting, to be able to do it successfully. But, it can be done by a new hunter! Let us know what specific questions you have, and we'll get ya going in the right direction! Best of luck on your hunting adventures! -
Sweet camper Larry! Love that retro style. You and Mrs Nomad should be nice and snug in that. Will be perfect for what you plan to do. Now that you have a travel trailer, retirement is official!!!! Enjoy my friend.

Happy Birthday!!! All the best to you sir!

Great looking bow! Hope to see it laying across a deer this year!
-
That doesn't look good. Always better to play it safe. If it were me, I'd look for another bow for the youngster.

Happy Birthday to both of you fine gentleman! -
When my wife ordered the hand sanitizer from Amazon, it explicitly said it was Made In USA. How it got handed off to China, is anyone's guess.
-
That really is enough to tick a person off Larry! Back in the beginning of April, my wife went on Amazon to order four big 32oz bottles of hand sanitizer. Two months go by no sanitizer! Wife calls and is told it's coming from "CHINA"!!!! Great......isn't that where Covid 19 came from too? Two more weeks go by and a woman with a strong Chinese accent calls to say its on the way. Great....... Two weeks after that we get delivered, four tiny one ounce bottles of hand sanitizer! WTH??? But at least we got SOMETHING. As Nomad got nutton! Sometimes this order online stuff isn't all it's cracked up to be. Great when it works. SOL when it doesn't.

I got the blind for a spare. Will use it somewhere, sometime. Had a nice chat with Rob. And hope he finds a new knife he likes! Too bad we didn't have ya stop in while we were there Rob. Would have counted as an official GTG!!! Next time you get over this way let me know! I'll buy you an eggwhich and a drink!!!

A couple more pictures of that memorable weekend. The morning Gary shot this buck, I watched one of the biggest bucks I've ever seen hunting. But he never got close enough for a shot. Saw some others too, that made my eyes open wide!!! What an awesome hunt! With some absolutely awesome people!

My hunting partner Gary, just got the mount back from our hunt on moogs property in Mendon last October. It is his biggest bow buck to date! And the memories made that weekend with Brian, Culvercreek- Bob, and Terry, will last a lifetime! What a great bunch of guy's! My heartfelt thanks go out to moog, for his unwavering hospitality and friendship. Who made this possible. My thoughts and prayers continue for Brian's beautiful wife Ana. God's got this my friend.
