Boot Suggestions
genesee_mohican replied to BKhunter's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I picked up a pair of Danner High Ground 1000gram insulation and really like them after testing out this past season. Great to walk in, good support and traction and very warm. Maybe you can find them on sale, worth a look. -
I picked up a 2016 Browning Recon Force Platinum so far this year. It's my 5th Browning and I'll stick with them, as they seem to be one of the best Cam companies out there right now and you can get a very good camera for around $100 bucks. I have 3 out now and all set up to take video.

Starting to snow here now in Livingston Co. I wonder how much we will get, I've heard 3-5 on wunderground but other sites are saying up to 10"

Scouting this time a year, working on stands for next fall, shed hunting and running cams. I'll run out of steam around green up, but start up around the end of August, early Sept again when I get that 'urge'.

what NY trips do you have planned for 2018?
genesee_mohican replied to Robhuntandfish's topic in General Chit Chat
I usually spend a week camping in the St Regis / Saranac area of the Adirondacks with my daughter, sister and her son. Nothing booked yet this year but still looking. We camp on the water and I go fishing at first light every day, hard to beat the relaxation, quite and beauty of the Adirondacks. -
Who has winter trail cams out?
genesee_mohican replied to genesee_mohican's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
I pulled cards and relocated 3 cameras last weekend. I was surprised to have only one picture of a buck, half rack forkhorn. I had a ton of does, a few coyote and fox. I came across a very large track a few weeks ago, so I followed it and found where it soon came together with 5 others and beded down. I put a few cams up in that area in hopes of getting a shot of the heavy deer. Another camera was placed on the side of the gorge where I found a well traveled coyote path. It also had one deer track and a few fox so I'm looking forward to seeing the cards in another month. -
New Rechargeable Drill Recommendations

Another vote Rigid here too. The lifetime warranty, which includes the battery sold me. Very well built. I bought the drill n driver combo on sale at Lowes. -
Toringo Crabapple
genesee_mohican replied to sailinghudson25's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I put in some of the DEC crab apples on my property 30 years ago and they are beauties now, lots of fruit for the birds. You will need to tube and fence them and take all measures to keep the deer and rabbits off them for the first few years. -
With fox I had my best luck on calm days and I'd go out the last hour to call. Some set's I'd have one on top of me within a minute or so, other times I'd leave the electronic call running 20 mins and they would come in towards the end. It was a lot of fun.

Back in the day I used to hunt fox quite a bit during the winter months. I never went unless there was snow on the ground because it just made it much easier to spot an approaching fox. I set up downwind of brushlots, overgrown fields or a small woods near brushy areas. All shots were under 50 yards and I used a 22lr or #3 shot for fox, but would be using buckshot for coyotes in close quarters.

What's the coolest thing you found in the woods?
genesee_mohican replied to helmut in the bush's topic in General Chit Chat
Reading some of these has jarred my memory a little. I remember coming across old foundations from homes long gone on what is now state land. My Dad found an old mill stone when we were deer hunting 35 years ago. We put a long stick through the center hole and managed to get it out. It's still in his yard today. -

I found an old knife near a fishing hole when I was very young ( I lost a nicer one later on so that didn't go well ). Ive found a few old antique bottles still in good condition. I found a pretty decent coleman saw a few years ago while shed hunting. I would say the coolest thing would be the matching set of sheds I found last year. That was pretty cool. -
What county of NYS do you reside in?

Things changed after 50, mainly 10 lbs of fat around my mid section. I'm up 8 lbs from last summer, so the diet has begun. I count calories each day, drink beer and each quiche.

That term brings back fond memories from my days back at Finger Lakes College in the early 80's. I remember they served it up at the cafeteria and it was great stuff!

Yeah, I figured it was coming.

http://www.thelcn.com/lcn05/after-bear-killed-in-letchworth-animal-advocates-call-for-opposition-to-dec-management-plan-20180108 With one facebook post and a news story causing a lot of negative feedback, that could be the last bear season in the park for a while.

Around 5 F for a high here today not taking below zero wind chills. I cut firewood a few hours and saw some deer in the back yard after sundown. I'm glad it's gonna warm up next week, they need a break.

Your hit list buck finally shows up...
genesee_mohican replied to LET EM GROW's topic in Deer Hunting
I would let him pass and hope he makes it to next fall. It's always more fun to hunt a buck that you know and have had history with. -
I'm not saying you are wrong on this but where does it show that the success rate triples during the two week crossbow season? Does the harvest rate increase by that much during the last two weeks? The number of hunters out during the last two weeks of the season in my area keeps declining. I drive by state land every day during the season and the number of hunters out the last two weeks of bow keeps going down, just like the number of hunters out after opening day of gun.

A very sad day, we lost a good one for sure! His love for whitetails and his knowledge of them along with his photography and writings were at the highest level and he will be missed. I attended a lecture 2 years ago and he seemed like he was in great shape, but you never know. My condolences to his family and friends.

I think this is one of the best times of the year to have the trail cams out in full force to see which deer made it through the season and to get some more neat photos of deer and other wildlife. I have 3 cams set up on my small parcel behind the house and another down in the park and I'm planning on putting a few more out there in the next few days. This buck passed by the camera quite a bit all season, so I'm hoping he'll be around again next fall.

I got a Yetti beer can thingy that keeps your beer cold and an F&S gift card. We got about 3 inches of snow today, seems we are in a thin band of lake effect coming off of Lake Erie, so could see a lot more. Snowing hard now.

If your in need of some better hunting clothing to keep you warm and dry, you may want to check out the sales at Midway USA. I got the flyer in the mail and saw the rain parka on sale. I have been needing a good warm parka for the rainy days, so I went online and got a Mackenzie Mountain Signature Extreme Parka for less than half price. Lots of good deals. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/939103268/midwayusa-mens-mackenzie-mountain-signature-extreme-parka
