I'm partial to the one and done. That is why i hunt with a muzzleloader anyway. But on occasions I wish I had and autoloader ML :-[ ! I have had two or three deer ,that i was able to get a second shot on them.Either after a miss or a bad hit. I practice speed loading at the range.

Nice buck. I'm thinking 3.5. Some of the younger 2.5 to 3.5 bucks, i have gotten pics of over the years. Seem to disappear. My theory is because they are not the dominant buck in that area. they are like satelite bucks. A guy 4 miles away had pics of bucks I had. You could definitely tell they were the same deer. Cruisers to hopefully bruisers.

Nice pics. Their is definitely an audible sound in there. It has to do with night photos . Day photos I haven't had deer even look at the cameras, unless their curiosity brings them over. My thought is there are more daytime sounds to somewhat cover the sound of a camera. But those deer are definitely on to somethin.LOL!

I have an opinion on this. Trail cams are for scouting,to get some idea of deer movement. And to see what is there, when we aren't. Natural deer movement that is. Bringing them to an established bait site is not really helping the hunting part of it. I choose to pick random trails or agriculture field corners. A bait pile is not a guarantee anyway. I have friends in states ,where baiting is legal and they will tell ya the same thing. But the fact that it is illegal in ny.Means loss of hunting privledges and forfeiture of personal property. And your name smeared in the paper for all to see. Not worth it to me.

OOF!! Thats not good! Not one to comment on such things. But it did raise an eyebrow, after looking at the photo.

Had a sow and two cubs come up during turkey season two years ago. The sow gave the alarm when she winded me. The cubs went up the tree. She circled me at a distance of 40 yds. Woofin and clacking her jaws. And a couple mock charges stompin on the ground. Everytime I tried to back out she would circle. Believe me I had the barrel pointed at her face. With turkey loads, I think i would have had to let her get real close,to do more than piss her off. Eventually after 45 minutes she called them down, and they ran off. I was calm while they were there. After they left is when the adrenalin came down. The hunt was over!

why isn't there a spring season? and should we start one?
TH41 replied to G-Man's topic in Bear Hunting
I'd agree, there isn't a large enough population. Although if you ask some of us on here we would say the population has to be pretty good. I think it depends on where you live. I live close to some big farm country just across the Pa border. I believe that is the reason why we see so many bears. A spring season will probably never happen in ny. I'm not sure how many states in the lower 48 have a spring bear season. But i do believe the one's that do, are close to the Canadian border.?? -
I have been seeing some good sized flocks. They look like they are doin fine. I hunt from Tioga county to steuben county. I went on a couple of tours and all areas saw birds. The properties I hunt in chemung county looked the best.As far as numbers went anyway. But there was also less snow. Looks like maybe a thaw this week, temps in the 40's ?? That should bring them all out. I'll be getting more pics here pretty soon. March and April scouting is on the way.

And ya know what. If I didn't have witnesses with me to hear a hen gobble and see her spit and drum in a full strut. People think your full of s#!t. I have had old hens do it in the fall. I think they get so agitated and excited, they basically flip out. The last one was last spring. I think she had a nest close by. She went back and forth in front of us for nearly two hours. She'd walk off. I'd start cutting, and she would come marching back. Cuttin, struttin, and gobble here and there. We call them butches, lol. And yes it is a weird gobble, hard to explain?? I gobble back at them on the mouth call, and really stir them up. :D

The longest bearded hen i took was 7 1/2 on a fall hunt. Thin as a pencil. And had a couple come in the spring two years ago with 6 inch beards. That was the first time I had two together. My buddy had to do a double take. He came close to pullin the trigger on the one. That fall they both had maybe 8 to 10 poults a piece .And their beards were the same length. Those are some cool pics.

If you injured the animal, and it died because you made a bad hit.It is your animal. And whether your a meat hunter or a trophy hunter if you smack a buck of this caliber, your gonna look for it. And as for it being a doe your gonna look for a couple days . And it's obvious during warm weather that the meat is not gonna be edible. So why would you drag it out. But with 200 inches of bone on it's head your gonna look for it a little longer. And LIhunt glad to see you are watching for proper spelling. My spelling is terrible. Thankyou

LOL! Thankyou!

If they are not there um yeah. If they are there I'd set up two trees over so I would have some one to hang with.LOL! Depends on the location and situation . On public land, if possible, I try to avoid spots where some one else has hunted or hunting.

Nice buck. Glad he found it. It will make a nice mount.

If you have good neighbors. Neighborhood watch signs instead of posted signs. Or both.

Saturday morning as we sat coyote hunting. There was a sound at first light, that got the heart pumpin. One gobble rang out, then another ,and another. As it got lighter the woods came alive.Basically all hell broke loose. Fighting purrs, gobbles, old raspy hens squawking, and some kee-kee's. We snuck to the truck and drove to the other side. There were birds scattered across two of the cornfields. Not sure how many, but enough! There was several nice longbeards in the mix. I tried to take a wide angle of both fields. But all I could see was little spots. :

I'm sorry to hear they are costing you money. What kind of livestock do you have? As far as 2x as many not sure about that. If there is a consistent food source in an area for coyotes. And you take several out . Then the next coyote, or pair to come along will move in. We had close to a dozen last year on one property. I took 8 and the neighbor took two. This year was the first year in several years that atleast a half dozen weren't shot before January. I had two go by me during archery took one. And never saw another until a few weeks ago, when I shot a male. And yesterday after yote hunting we checked over the property. We saw one set of yote tracks. More coon and fox than ever. But I still don't believe there is any accurate way to keep coyote numbers. In a hard winter they could be, or go anywhere. And if they move into an area where nobody is hunting them, and food is there. They will stay. I also believe the state needs to open the season year round. I would much rather hunt them from February to May. When they are breeding. And when fawns are dropping. But one thing is for sure they will always be here.

Congrats to the young man on some fine birds!

There are plenty of other states and provinces that have had bears, coyotes, wolves ,and mountain lions. That have phenominal deerhunting and have for a long time. Deer will adjust, they have adjusted for humans, they will adjust for predators. Just look one state south.Pa has more hunters, bears, coyotes, bobcats, and now reportedly mountain lions. Their deer hunting has been pretty darn good for decades. I'm not worried about predators. I'm more concerned with the lack of interest by hunters,to hunt these coyotes or bear. They have to be kept in check too. I have heard ,no idea how many hunters. Say," well didn't see any deer today but saw a coyote or coyotes go by." Why didn't they shoot? Because they didn't want to screw up their deer stand or season !?? Then turn around and say their deer hunting is screwed up because, there are too many coyotes?? I shoot them on sight. If they are open, and they give me a good shot. I'm shootin. I've smoked them out of several stands during deer season.Gun and bow. Then turned around the next day and popped a deer from the same stand. If they are here, they are here.
