Someone posted a great anatomy clip here last year. That hole between the shoulder and leg bone quartering towards is smaller than the deers heart. That is a tough choice in my opinion and i would pass on that.
  2. I cant wait to see TF's posts from bow season. I wonder if you will still be out as much during late muzzle season now. I guess i will fnd out..
  3. 18 days to go now. I wasn't in the mood until last week, but now i am psyched!!! Got my tags, and got a DMP. I have been shooting the bow for only a week now,but i will be ready. Not like one forgets everything about it. Last year i practiced a ton and never shot at a deer, this year i am doing the reverse, hehehe. I have not moved any stands, gonna take it easy for the first part of October. Leisure hunting, then i will hit it hard come late October, early November. I have been eating a lot of venison these last two weeks, that helps with the motivation as well...
  4. count me in,just for the heck of it. I certainly don't expect to be on the podium, but it will be fun for the company. I got skunked during bow season last year, passed up early opportunities. That will be different this year, look out does!!
  5. It is bow season for me as well. Temps are generally nice and you really get to learn things from watching unpressured deer. I can't hardly wait to get out there...
  6. i will be headed out shortly, looking for browns or brookies with the fly rod. Just have to go back to the creek after having a great day earlier this week.
  7. You are on the rigjt track AT. Keep tying a bunch of the same flies so you get those particular skills mastered, then do a different one. I switched too much in my early days. And trout do eat all sorts of things,i had one eat my strike indicator once, not my fly. I kept yelling, not that!!!
  8. Grampy, you are so right. The creek does hold some monsters. I saw pictures of two browns some friends caught last fall, they were both well over 20 inches and fat.
  9. culver,i have not had much luck with that fly before. But it sure worked that day...
  10. I had some time to go fishing around noon yesterday and wasn't convinced it was a good time. When i got to my parking spot i saw a few rises upstream from the bridge. Maybe not so bad after all. I suited up and got close. The fish were feeding on something beneath the surface,as there was no obvious hatch on. I used a dry as an indicator and put an emerger as a dropper. The fish didnt like my first choice, but when i switched to a hares ear nymph they started hitting. I caught a bunch without having to move at all. It was great!
  11. Couple hundred years ago that is what people cooked over, open fire with a hole in the gable for the smoke to exit.
  12. I shot a little buck,he had lost one spike and was in the brush. Not ideal, but he will be tender. Then went for a still hunt and now I am laying down waiting for some bedded does to get up so I can shoot one. Hopefully soon....
  13. I will have to go out tomorrow. I only bagged a buck and a doe and three deer are a years worth of meat for me,four are even better. I buy no meat in the grocery store. Hopefully i can connect,it has been proven difficult this last week.
  14. I am going out tomorrow for sure... Went for a stroll this afternoon and spooked some deer, got down on one knee quickly and there was a spike that had no idea why everyone scattered, but he went into lightspeed mode. Only thing was he was coming straight at me. Too fast for a shot, but he passed me close enough for spear work. Made me think of moog for some reason, one of his arrows would have worked. I could have stabbed that spike. Next time maybe...
  15. Go get one Fletch,i will get one tomorrow...
  16. Was out yesterday with two friends, one shot an 5 point buck,4 on the left and only a brow tine on the right, the rest broke off. Weighed inun at 145 #. Then we did a little drive in the afternoon and the other friend got a nice doe. I just saw tails. I am not going out today or tomorrow, but will try hard on Friday and the weekend.
  17. Thanks mohican,i am headed out again. We got maybe 3 inches overnight, fresh tracking snow. I am going to try to fill a doe tag today, but won't be upset ig a decent buck comes along.
  18. And here I thought i stopped playing in the sandbox a long time ago. Maybe not...
  19. yeah,i forgot to take a pic though. Next time. Maybe call it soft porn? Porn novel?
  20. i had a bullet stay in a doe the first time this year when i shot with my muzzleloader. She was quartering away and maybe 60 yds off. So the bullet had to travel through a lot of stuff. I hit her on the last rib,the liver was shredded and the bullet also destroyed the front shoulder. Very nice expansion on the bullet. It worked as advertised. 250 grain shockwave with 2 pellets of white hots.
  21. We also found fresh human tracks on our foray today. Trespassers!!!!!! The woods were not nearly as well rested as we thought. Looked like some people doing a drive yesterday. I guess we have to spend more time on that side of the road next year.
  22. well,i saw a lot of tails today. I could have shot one deer, but was trying to walk around it to push it to my friend. Well, that deer wasn't alone as it turns out and the other ones busted me and they took of. I finished my half circle and was working my way back to my friend when he shot!! I caught up with him and he was puzzled. It was a close shot,50 yds and the deer was standing broadside. I think he got a twig on the way there and grazed the brisket or chest. Nothing but white hair and more than I have ever seen. It was everywhere. We followed the tracks for a long while and just got a few drops of blood and never caught a glimpse of the doe. Seems like she will make it. My buddy was demoralized. Then we both sat for the end if the day being able to see far,and we saw nothing. No idea where the deer where hiding. We both thought we would at least see something in the distance, even if we get no shot. Not today! Better luck tomorrow.
