Who will be in their stands on Monday?!?
BowmanMike replied to Iluvracks1359's topic in Deer Hunting
I will be out a little here and there. I have some stands that are a 4 min walk from my house,so i will probably hit those. The friends property is 3 mins by car and then a short walk there. I still have a list of things to get done before i can get really serious about hunting, but thats ok. I am not going to let many does walk this year either, last year i got none during bow. I still need to practice killing deer with the bow,I only got three so far. -
nice buck for sure, best of luck!!!

So looks like the main irritant are the other people with guns, haha. I think that too. There is a group that leases a 500 acre former dairy farm, and last year one of the guys shot a doe on the property i hunt, two properties over from the farm they lease. Not like they dont know the boundary either since they posted their lease heavily.

I also am in the centering the housing in the peep camp. My buddy used to have a tiny peep and a giant pin,he couldnt see much when he put that on a deer. It is switched out now...

that is excellent to hear. I guess i will be in the market for any of the quality bows from 3 to 5 years ago. I don't even have to test shoot them, they all will blow my mind after shooting this starter bow for 3.5 years. Maybe i will see if there are some good bows available at my shop to test out.

I just have a question about used bows in general. Do the limbs wear out over time or is that not a concern? So how long is a bow good for that shoots maybe 1500 arrows a year? I dont mind replacing parts like the string and even cams if need be,that is like tires and brakes on a vehicle. As long as i know the bow will be ok.

Wow,now i am in the mood for bow season. Upper 40's feel like thirties to me right now,not used to cooler temps apparently. This gets the blood flowing for sure!!

Very similar for me to how you described it. Depends on my situation and attitude that day. I have shot a few forkhorns, but generally i am looking for at least a 2.5 year old. I know there are bigger ones around, but those guys only show up on the camera for the most part. I passed a six point last year in the middle of bow season and that ended empty handed for me. I got close several times to an 8 point on the ground, that was thrilling. Never quite connected, until gun season. That morning i could have shot him with the bow, figures. I think i saw or got closer to more bigger bucks last year than the years before,so i hope that trend continues. I have to say too,an old doe can be very clever as well. I was stalking a group of deer and was doing good, getting to 40 yds until the lead doe crested the knoll, she picked me out in 2 seconds.

The dog stars by peter heller, but i warn you, once you get sucked in the deer will be safe from you... -
Good luck guys!!

I shot a nice bow at the shop, maybe a halon? it was set for 68# and felt the same drawing back as mine at 55#. I will try to get by with mine and six new arrows, then retire it,at least for me,after the season.
-
bow is set for 55# and drawlength is 30"
-
That is how we learn, right? I am very eager to try the 400 grain arrows..I can not believe how well the field points grouped, even at 40yds. But that does me no good at all when the BH are spraying all over. I can't shoot at a deer and hope the arrow lands in the right spot. Spine must be part of it too. My old arrows were 350 grain as opposed to the current 340 and they shot the BH well, even though the bow was further out of tune. I think maybe my string is getting a little stretched too,i must have shot over 3000 arrows with it. How often do you guys change it?
-
I will get different arrows,i can not afford to drop $800 on a new bow right now. Matthews has a great offer, the z3 for $599 plus $150 for a package with drop away rest, sights quiver and stabilizer. But i will make the one i have work for me and look for a used one for next season.
-
I am not sure i have enough umph for a mechanical head. The bow is set at 55#. I might try to have them shorten the arrows i have, they could loose maybe 2". I hope that will help, and then i can get a different set up without this time crunch. I just want the BH to hit consistently, then i can move the sight and call it good for this year.

I think i am giving up on this rig now. I just went to the bow shop and shot through some paper. The arrows i have are too heavy for my setup, the guys there had me shoot a 400 grain and it looked great through paper,my 340 ones were horrible. Looking to get a new bow i think.
-
How much wobble is acceptable? I spun all five of my broadheads, even the ones i have never shot, and they all wobble a little when i spin them..
-
That sounds like me.when i started out several years ago. I swear the deer knew my vehicle and deemed me no threat. Until i found a friend that took me under his wing,we made those deer pay, haha. Welcome to the forum

thanks,i will.

I think i will head to my bow shop in Oneonta today and see if Dave can help me,and to see what he has there for used bows.
-
not great,i am wondering if the tip is a little bent on one of them. I rolled the arrows on its shaft and they looked ok. Also,i dont aim at the exact same spot with the broadheads. Before i switched to these arrows i had some that were almost too stiff for the drawweight, and they had the FP and BH in the same spot, even though the bow was further out of tune than it is now. I could see the arrows fishtail some with the old arrows, but they placed great, and Kinetic energy was good too. Doesn't really make sense to me. I think the old arrows were 380 or 400,these are 340. That is what the manufacturer recommends for my set up though. Gold tip hunter arrows.
-
i tried again today and the best i can get is a 3" difference at 20 yds. If the guy at the shop has time i will have him check it out..BH and FP are 100 grain. Maybe he has a nice used bow there,i would not be afraid to get one this late in the game. I feel my form is good,i get great groups with the field points. I was hoping to maybe be able to get three deer with my bow. Got my muzzle tag and a dmp. I will be out early October, but mostly to be out.

i know,it was a risky post. Beef is not part of every dinner here.
