  1. Oh they do eat the red oak acorns, they prefer white, but if red is all there is they eat them with gusto.
  2. i got my first bow deer that way,but there has to be luck involved for sure. More than with stand hunting i think. I got close to getting a 1 1/2 year old buck my 2nd year,i just popped over a rise and caught movement. Plus the little dummy was curious. Also got very close to a 2 1/2 year old last year, but he ambled off when i was 45 yds out,not because he saw me either. His nap time was over. I would guess the deer see me first over 80% of the time though, they can detect movement even through brush like nobodys business. So you can alert the herd fairly quickly if you do it often...
  3. nice!! I bet a buck is keeping tabs on that flock of birds...
  4. Every place has to pasteurize it or use an alternative approved treatment now. They changed that law about ten years ago, which i think is silly. Not much grows in that tart stuff. We used to press our own from wild apples collected from the ground, and i am still alive by most accounts. We have not had good apple years, otherwise i would be pressing right about now...
  5. I just went outside, and we have a little pond close to the house that has some surface water drainage running into it. It sounds like a river,i have never heard that before in the 20 years we lived here. The pond has some pipe overflow drainage, but it is not handling the amount of water that is pouring in,it is crazy. I am outside of Cooperstown
  6. I didn't measure the inches, but here it poured, then no rain then it poured again for i dont know how many times today. I have more surface water running than after snowmelt...I am pretty close to the top of a hill,so it is wet alright. By the way,it is pouring again right now. My guess is 3-4 inches, thats nuts.
  7. maybe wax the string a little, and you could/ should wipe the bow off when you get back in. If you waxed the string recently you are ok anyway.
  8. You know what that means? We can never join the same camp, hahaha.
  9. Biz,i think they are olives, haha. I sat for an hour this afternoon, saw nothing and spooked nothing. Quite ok,it started to pour as i left the woods. This dummy forgot his phone again,i got to get a handle on that...
  10. That's exactly what i was thinking. Papists from last year was high lung too,it seems those old boys can live with that for a while... And congrats on getting him in the end.
  11. This is really a slow start for you and your dogs,i am keeping my fingers crossed for a streak of successes!!
  12. I don't wash my clothes or myself..Makes for a rough 2 1/2 months.
  13. chest freezers are more energy efficient, and i find putting the different kinds of venison in labeled boxes helps me keep the freezer organized. I get ice build up in mine but never defrost it. I scrape the ice with a windshield scraper once a year onto a baking sheet,a five minute job.
  14. not sure that you will find a good one for under $150. I have a summit viper, which is no fun to carry but nice to sit in. The shooting rail doesn't flip up,so you have to stand for a bow shot. I am going to put a backpack frame on it to ease the load, the provided straps are rough!!! I think this one runs $200
  15. I am with buckmaster and grampy,i would go in a light drizzle if i am motivated enough. Hard rain or threatening hard rain i stay home.
  16. So i walked in the woods too far this morning, past the spot i picked out. I plopped down when it was starting to get light out and saw nothing for the first hour, then i catch movement just before i have to leave. A deer walked right past the spot i had picked out. Couldn't tell what it was exactly. At least I picked a good spot Oh and i got a buck as well.
  17. Do i get the prize for forgetting stuff? Forgot my phone, and had to be out ofthe woods at 8. No watch on my wrist either...
  18. I am up,i could hardly sleep anyway. It is dry here in 4F. Look out deer, here i come!!!
  19. SSW wind here in 4 f. I will sit on the ground...also won't sleep much...
  20. I am ready now...just in time. I will sit on the ground for a few hts tomorrow morning, wedged between a giant oak log and a tree 50 yds of a field.
  21. I got my confidence back, using my old arrows. They dont fly perfect, but at least they hit consistent. This is at 32yds,aimed for top right. I have three arrows, one for each deer i plan to get during bow season, haha. I put the broadheads on and did a spin test to find the best combination. Thanks to everybody for the input on my questions.
  22. Thank you guys for all the input. I think i will go the archery talk route, unless i find something good locally. I want to get a nice bow and keep it for a long time. I can't see where the development in bows will make big leaps like it has in the last 10 - 15 years,so i should be ok. I have never owned a new vehicle, and i think i can do the same for the bows now that i know a little more about it.
  23. 20,12 and 15 yds. If the conditions are right i would go out to 35. I passed a huge doe at 31 a few years back, but she knew something was up,so i don't think she would have waited in her spot for the arrow to arrive.
  24. I think young buck as well. I passed one with a slightly smaller spread a few years ago during gun season..
  25. Glad i read this. I dont even know where my hunting clothes are, better get them out and i like to put pine branches in the tote with them,my cheap cover scent...
