All calm in 4F now,and i bet the deer are on their feet now. Just heard a shot too
-
Nice to have capeable help. Haha.

I did not let anything walk past me. Shot a 7 point before 7 a.m.,then a doe at 7.10. That was all for tags. Ok,usually it doesnt go that way for me and I had spent a lot of time in the woods for bow season.

I got my deer yesterday, just went out this a.m. to set up a friend down the road from my house. It is pretty miserable out there between the wind and wet snow. I am happy to take some time off hunting until muzzleloader season opens.

2017 HuntingNY Gun Harvest Thread
BowmanMike replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
I got my gun season done and over with at 7.10 this morning. The buck came by at 6.55. After 10 minutes i went to make sure he was where i thought he was,and as I am standing above him two does come walking up They were maybe 50 to 60 yds out. I picked the bigger one and an open spot, she stepped in it but turned away from me,so she was quartering. She dropped in sight. I am very excited.- 48 replies

The doe i shot today was as stanky as the buck. I saved both animals glands for next year...

Well,my morning was short and sweet. After getting skunked with the bow I saw this buck at 6.55, even though I told him if i see him with a gun in my hand he is going down. He taunted me during bow season, but i bet he regrets it now. He tried to walk past me at 30 yds,i sat at the bottom of a tree and grabbed my muzzleloader when he was behind a tree. Picked an opening and boom. I waited for 10 mins and then went to where i thought he crashed and there he was. I took some pictures after thanking the deer for giving his life to feed me. All of a sudden two does walk my way. Good thing I reloaded the muzzleloader,i picked the bigger one and shot her. She went down in sight. This is my shortest gun season ever, but I like it. Have to wait for muzzleloader season now. But i did spend a lot of time in the woods during bow. The buck is a seven point, not big but also not small.

I got out late, after 3 p.m. I was in my way to my spot on the ground when i saw movement. A nice shooter buck about 90 yds from me. He did not come in my direction and i snuck a little closer. He went towards some does and started chasing them and keeping a spike horn at bay. I managed to sneak closer to the action and the buck found one doe he really liked. I had one deer between the buck and doe and me,a spike. The big buck was only 25 yds from the little one,so i had to get real close to the young one to try to get in bow range. Eventually the youngster picked me off and they all ran. I watched them all for a good 30 minutes though, was interesting. 10 minutes before sunset a big group of does came over the hill and i thought towards me,but they skirted me at 40 yds,the closest ones anyway. I have learned some and seen some cool things this bowseason, although ended up deerless. That buck hath better be more careful tomorrow when i have the muzzleloader in my hands,he would have been dead today if that was the case. Good luck to all and stay warm!

Hey,i am in 4 F as well, outside of Cooperstown. I have not seen anything like you have, that sounded great. I will go out again today to try and get a deer with the bow. Maybe they will chase here as well, one can only hope. I have to shooy my muzzle loader today as well, got a different brand of bullets. Good luck on this last day of archery!!

Jumped two deer on the way in,then saw one buck about 80 yds out,i think a smallish one. He walked away from me. Other than that nothing. Great spot though, rubs close by and an active scrape too. Might go out Friday afternoon for a last bow sit. Still dont want to accept getting skunked.

I am all situated in the oak grove where i had so much fun Saturday. Spooked two deer out of there on my way in,oh well. I have found a better spot on the ground, excellent shooting lanes and three big trees around me for cover. One of them leans at the base, how comfy, like an easy chair. Good luck to all. I would love to be able to post once at least in the harvest thread.

Relying on tracker/dogs is out of control!
BowmanMike replied to New York Hillbilly's topic in Deer Hunting
Phew,i think i am just at over 20 now. Only three with the bow though, and i want to get a doe or two with my bow for just that reason. But I will pass little bucks, and i passed shots on does earlier in the season because of the temps. But I agree that one really has to practice the real thing to become better at it. I shoot a lot of practice arrows, but that is different from shooting a deer. And on that note,i better get in the woods now... -
If that happens to me this afternoon,I think he would be dead meat. Maybe not,i would prefer a doe ovet a small buck. Letting the little guys go seems to be working on the property I hunt, there are some nice ones around this year. Hope that continues...

Just a really really big tarsal gland ,stanky.
-
Basturds.

Yeah, congratulations!! And starting with a 40 yard shot, holy toledo. My three bowkills combined probably only add up to 51 yds. Any harvest with a bow is an accomplishment,i have to remember that myself.

Saw a bunch of does in the hayfields tonight on my ride home from work in 4f. I might have to get my ars out tomorrow afternoon,i can't quite swallow a bowseason skunking yet. Also i just looked at a buddies buck he shot in the adirondacks last weekend,a heavy 8 , 180#. Nice big deer. I am not picky at this point, any decent doe or still a 2 1/2 yrar old buck are game.

Relying on tracker/dogs is out of control!
BowmanMike replied to New York Hillbilly's topic in Deer Hunting
That is complete nonsense, just because it is a buck doesn't change the criteria for shot selection. There are a lot of bozos out there. I just took the bottom section of a ladder stand that is on the property i have sole hunting rights to. That one was well over the line and the line is marked fairly well. A lot of people have questionable ethics,to say the least. -
Fingers crossed for you!
-
You should have a shot at a nice one by now, talk about putting your time in... frustrating when it is not working out over a long stretch.

I passed on the biggest buck i got to draw on the other afternoon. He was standing at 30 yds,but a tree covered his front legs and I couldn't judge how far back I would hit if i just squeaked the arrow past the tree. He was a good sized 8 I think, and I couldn't move since the doe he was following was looking at me. I feel comfortable to 30 yds and a little more, but wasnt feeling it for that shot. There isn't much worse than wounding a deer because of poor shot selection. Mistakes happen of course. I would rather come up empty than wounding a deer. -
Hey,at least you are still optimistic. I dont know if i will have the optimism to go out one more time.

Hey,it is my third bow season as well. I learned a few things maybe as well. Been close to a two nice 2.5 year old bucks, and I think i am hooked on hunting from the ground mostly now. The heart gets pumping when a deer is close, more so than on the stand. Too bad i didn't get another bow harvest under my belt,i passed on some easy shots early on and let a six point walk. Thats all good though,i will fill the freezer with the muzzleloader, though I would have preferred the bow as the tool of choice.
