  1. I don't target them specifically, but there's a decent population around us and I have had a few shot opportunities while deer hunting. I haven't pulled the trigger yet, but I would like to take one at some point. It'll have to be a decision of the moment. I'm a little leery of using a bow vs. a rifle though.
  2. This buck was getting his groove on a little early in the season! http://news10.com/2017/09/26/10-point-buck-attacks-man-in-troy/?utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook_WTEN
  3. I've got a stand in the same tree that camera is attached to. Lots of traffic on that card pull.
  4. From this weekend's card pull. His rack isn't that big, but he's a big boy anyway. Hope I get to see him when he's all rutted up!
  5. I couldn't take a pass on that. It would be my best buck.
  6. I've got to say, this is an interesting thread. For whatever reason, Subaru just haven't made my personal radar although I see a lot of them on the road. Glad they made my radar now. We're about 1-1 1/2 years away from replacing my wife's car.
  7. We got my wife the same gun a couple of years ago. Put a Nikon 4-12x on it. We tried the core-lokts, American Whitetail and Federal Fusions. They all shot pretty close but went with the fusions. I forgot the grain weight, but I can look tonight. If I recall, it was the heavier of the two choices. Nice gun, light and accurate. The first deer she took dropped in place at around 150 yds, so she was happy. I might carry it a bit this year if I can pry it away from her. And welcome to the board!
  8. C'mon over and shoot with me! We've got a 300 yard range out back. I'll cook the burgers, you bring the beer. For afterwards of course! Seriously though, on a windless day and a lead sled it's not that hard to do as long as you do your part. Not all my groups are that tight but it's definitely do-able.
  9. Agree with Biz. At 200 yds; Remington 700 .270 5 shots within 1-1.25" with usually 2-3 touching. Savage 11 .243 5 shots within an inch consistently. (My most accurate rifle). From a Lead Sled, but the non strap-down model. Shooting Federal Fusions in both. I still have to do my part.
  10. I just got that bear target a couple of weeks ago. Was an Amazon item for only about $100. I'm liking it enough so far. No replaceable vitals though.
  11. Came home and found my buck target "beheaded" yesterday. Happens almost every year, sometimes a few times per year. Usually it gets knocked over and/or scattered. It was most likely a young 6 pointer that I frequently see around the house hanging with 5 does. Must have not liked the interloper near his harem. I would have loved to see his reaction when the head came off. Kind of like rockem-sockem robots (for those oldsters that remember those). I put a trailcam on it last night, so that pretty much guarantees that won't happen again now that a camera is there.
  12. LOL, we're still talking about peeing, right?
  13. TF, for an extra challenge try writing it "hands free"!
  14. Town of Thurston. We had the land for about 20 years prior to building the house. It was vacant hunting land. When I first built, it wasn't too bad but the combined taxes have risen an average of about $800/year since. As I project that out to another 6-7 years when I retire, it will force me to sell. Most of the town and county taxes go to state required unfunded mandates (such as Medicare). The town tells me that they only get about 30% of the total tax money that is collected.
  15. Well, it does have this on it. 1800 sq ft finished, a 1600 sq ft basement (unfinished) and a 30 x 40 pole barn with loft. Now it seems better but it's a hell of a lot for a hilltop home in Steuben County, although comparable to other homes in the area. But unfortunately, no waterfront. Getting quotes for a pond though!
  16. I must be on a different page as I never really thought of buying hunting land as an investment. I've got about 85 acres that I bought in three stages in the 90's and early 2000's. 7 acres for $900/ac, 43 for $700, and 36 for $1000 acre. We go through life only once, and we mostly get to live it as we want (within each person's means of course). I've got friends who bought boats for that kind of money around the same time. They weren't investments either, but they're selling those for pennies on the dollar these days where at least my hobby "investment" certainly won't lose money. Not knocking the boaters, I'm a boater too. I did build a house to live in on the property in 2008 (on the 7 acre road front parcel). I do want the same return most people look for when I sell it 10-ish years from now. Property tax implications? Well, it's NY state. 12k + per year and rising. Thanks Andy and the previous bad governors! I didn't get it just for hunting, we're using it all year long. But the land purchase was for my and my wife's lifestyle and we won't care about how our investment did when we're dust.
  17. I think Eddie 33 needs to adjust his marketing target audience. To developers; easy to tear down house and barns, perfect for high end country subdivision.
  18. I'll be out looking around, but I tend to wait until the first frost before shooting any. Those bot fly larva things just aren't appealing to me! I know they're harmless and all that, but F those things!
  19. I'm fortunate to live where I hunt, and am on the property a lot with a quad and tractor almost all year round. They never get spooked by the machines like they do when I'm on foot. I get a little lazy by the end of rifle/muzzleloader and usually take the quad at least half way in and once in a great while, right up to the stand. It's more likely that I do that for the afternoon watch and I try to not ride in the morning. All that said, these are mostly younger deer and I would think the wise old bucks don't tolerate much unless they're in the thick of the rut. When I do ride in and see deer, I frequently wonder if that big old buck that I'm targeting blew out of there when he heard the engine coming. We're on top of a hill and sound carries. I can hear quads running a mile away.
  20. Life long Bills fan here. I drink the Kool-Aid every year. This year's Kool-Aid has gone sour. I'm not sure they can beat the Jets this season.
  21. If you're thinking along the lines of a Deere, have you looked at the E-series? I've got a 3038E (38 hp diesel) and it's been up for about anything I've asked from it. It's lacking a few things to keep the pricing down, like no remote hydraulics and no mid-PTO. That's never affected me as I haven't had a need for those two particular items. Mine is about 5 years old and IIRC, it was around 15-16k. Had some hiccups in the beginning but JD stood behind their product and it's been flawless for me since. BTW, 5 ft bucket, and 5 ft brush hog. I "learned" to be maneuverable, and where I couldn't, I just those trees down for firewood.
  22. Looks nice grampy. I like the snow camo dip! Good collection of photos too.
