Grampy, I bought a pair of Muck Woodys in May of this year when I found out my waterproof boots weren't any more. I love those things. Completely waterproof and compared to my other boots they feel like I'm wearing moccasins. Looking forward to wearing them during bow season this year. I've got pretty wide feet and their regular width fits fine. Bought mine at Tractor Supply too. They had the better price than Dicks or Field and Stream.

Who is planning vacation days for the season?
Steuben Jerry replied to sethf11's topic in General Chit Chat
Always take the first week of southern zone rifle season and the Friday before. It's become a family tradition of sorts, especially with a big Thanksgiving dinner mixed in most years. I'll take a day or two around Halloween and a couple of days between the 6th and the 16th. Our youngest daughter is due with her first baby (and our fourth grandchild) near the beginning of October. She bow hunts and rifle hunts with us so that's a bit of a curve ball. -
Wow! What a trophy! Good luck this year Wooly!

Agree to disagree. It's all good Gringo!
-
Fair enough Gringo, you're certainly entitled to your opinion. See, that's the nice thing about hunting, there's lots of legal methods of taking a deer. You may not agree with every different method, but I think you're a bit judgmental to call someone unethical just because they utilize a different legal method than you prefer. I respect your opinion, but others may be somewhat insulted by doing things right, and being called unethical. Myself, I'm not a fan of driving deer or taking button bucks. But that's just me. These are legal methods in NYS, so I don't consider it unethical.
-
So call it baiting if that's what you prefer. It's legal, and beneficial for the wildlife for a host of reasons. Are you implying that it's unethical to hunt near a food plot or watering hole? Do you hunt on farms or near any kind of ag fields? Because it's the exact same thing, only you didn't do any of the labor or have any direct cost. Do you hunt the woods only? Acorns, beech nuts, etc, etc.
-
I suppose someone could call it that, but I consider baiting dumping something "foreign" on the ground like a pile of corn or using a timed feeder. For me food plots and water holes are for the 365 day/year benefit of wildlife. Deer and all other wildlife.

I've got a $6k estimate to make that a real pond next year, 10 ft deep. I'm kind of toying with the idea of buying an older dozer to mess around with it myself and take care of a few other projects like additional dug ponds and then selling it. Only thing is I've never even sat on a dozer before and am a bit leery of buying a money trap. Renting a dozer could be an option too.

That's only around 200 yds behind my house. My neighbor let me take a bunch of blugills from his pond, but the herons fished them all out in a couple of weeks.
-
A couple of years ago I dammed up a small spring with a tractor bucket. The deer loiter around it constantly. It looks big, but that's only about 20 x 60 and just a 2-3 feet deep.

Nice save Grampy - you're building up the good karma points!

I bought a Dodge Ram 1/2 ton about 15-16 years ago when they had the 7/70 warranty. The transmission crapped out at around 71,500 miles. They wouldn't do a damn thing for me. In fact they tried to make me feel like a fool for even trying to get a little off the replacement tranny. Hell, I would have felt a little better if they bought me a lousy cup of coffee. I haven't bought another Dodge and won't ever again. Huge rust holes in the fenders a couple of years after that. Nickled and dimed me to death.

He looks nice now, and will look nicer this Fall when you pose for a photo with him!

I'd drop the hammer on that without a second thought. Good luck, hope you get him Eddie!

Fisher denied. Don't mess with my cat!
Steuben Jerry replied to Steuben Jerry's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
Full can of exactly that this morning! I have to admit, from the little I know about Fishers, I would have expected it to kill the cat. I'm pleasantly surprised at the outcome. I've never been any kind of cat person, but I did get attached to her. I'm thinking the Fisher is a juvenile, and I expect it'll be back. Camera will stay out, and I think I'll move another near it and set it on video. -
Our chicken coop got raided overnight last week. Lost a bird and some eggs. I suspected a Raccoon or a Opossum as this is kind of an occasional event. I put a havahart trap out and set up a trail cam. Got a big male Opossum the first night, but when I pulled the card the other day, I saw that this smallish Fisher was looking for an easy chicken dinner during the daylight hours. Our outdoor cat has her own "apartment" in the coop and has become the defacto rooster for our little flock. She's gotten sick and tired of getting raided so she had a skirmish with the Fisher and ran it off. No harm to her, no harm to any birds. Funny thing is, she's very docile and has an indoor cat personality. She gets extra canned food and extra attention for the next week!

Grrr, 8T is PP required for first, none for 2nd pick for the second year in a row. I saw 20 does per sit last year, and I see at least a dozen each time I'm out doing some brush hogging. I counted 32 in a nearby field at sundown a couple of weeks ago with no bucks. I know that a management area is big and local conditions vary, but something just doesn't jive here.

Happy Birthday JR!

The debate over using phasers for hunting will have been settled, and deer hunters all over will argue that it's not real hunting if you use a phaser. The primitive season will be for centerfire rifles only.

Following this thread as I'm having a pond or maybe two dug next Spring/Summer. One is a spring fed area in a gully that I made a practice pond by damming it up with my tractor bucket. They're going to dig it deeper and make the dam bigger. It's about 140 x 40. I was quoted $6k for that. I was going to do it this year, but I need more time to get the trees out of there. My work crew for the tree removal is one old dude (me). The other will be a dug pond in a field that I'm going to have done with the first one. Size is currently undetermined and unquoted until I determine size. Cost will probably determine size.

I forgot about that. I lost two heat shields on my '07 Tundra. Probably 40,000 miles ago. I never replaced them. No problems.
