  1. No one wants Venison for xmas dinner. So it's all mine. They would rather eat greasy fatty beef. I'm surprised not many people appreciate the lean deer meat.
  2. He ate your deer by mistake, and is waiting for another one to give you.
  3. So now the sharp shooters only need to take out 2998.
  4. I'm glad it's over. Time to get back to real life.
  5. 100gr. .243. Cheapest off the shelf ammo that I had in my basement. No premium hunting ammo. What happened is, when I sighted in my new scope, I went to the range with the cheap ammo. sighted in perfectly at 100 yards. and I never made it back to the range with the premium ammo. So I had to go in the woods with the same ammo I sighted in with. I'm still impressed with the knock down power of the .243. The exit wound was BiG. This deer was going no where with a 3" exit wound.
  6. When I put my deer down this year. 1st shot he went down. I took 3 more shots, just to make sure he wasn't getting up. I was not in the mood to go chasing a deer down the valley, onto private property. Turns out I missed with every follow up shot !! Buck fever took over, my hands were trembling. When I looked for the wounds, there was only one. Perfect lung shot, that exited low on the other side. May have caught the heart.
  7. Me personally, I downgraded to a .243. Now I can spend hours at the range. The .243 left a 3" exit wound in my deer. Bang Flop, Bucky just fell over dead. No tracking, no nothing.
  8. Forget the .30-06. Buy her a .243 semi. Otherwise she'll take 2 shots, and be done.
  9. I like to walk around, and see all the animal tracks. last week, I saw deer tracks leaving the mountain laurel, and heading to the big woods. So now I know where they bed down.
  10. What other method is there ? a button is 6 months. A spike is 1.5 years. A doe, I have no idea.

    Deer age

Do you ever have your deer aged ? I often wonder how old they are. It's easy when they are spikes, or button's, but the older ones are harder to tell.
  12. You should catch a little yote pup, and raise him as a house dog. That would be pretty cool. I bet they are highly trainable.
  13. If you hunt in a state park, coyotes are there to stay. Where I hunt, it's deer hunting only.
  14. I heard of guys putting out bowls of antifreeze. I hunt state land in the catskills, and I see the hairy scat all over the woods.
  15. The DEC wants everyone to use the word HARVEST. Due to all the anti's out there.
  16. This was my best season ever. All the previous years sucked.
  17. That's because your sled has heated floor boards.
  18. This year, I had 1 engorged tick on my deer. It was ready to drop off, as it was just in the fur. Big and fat tick. I didn't look for any other ticks, although I should have as it was warm on opening weekend. Do you generally see ticks on your harvest ?
  19. Get him MOUNTED !!!!! It'll be worth every penny.
  20. That is my biggest fear in the woods. Falling down, injuring myself, in the middle of nowhere.
  21. The east end of LI is loaded with farms, and ticks. The deer eat all the grapes. Wineries put up fencing around the grapes vines. Deer wreck cars on a daily basis. Lyme disease is rampant. Deer are not so cute out east. People are Bambi haters. They call them lawn rats, or yard rats. But when you want to hunt there property, and there house is 100' from the next house, there are too many problems. No one wants to relax the rules. They rather call in a gov't agency to cull the population. Why they don't allow year round bow hunting is beyond me. Instead they will hold town meetings, to talk about deer, and Lyme disease.
  22. http://www.newsday.com/long-island/towns/3-000-deer-on-li-in-federal-sharpshooters-sights-this-winter-1.6573185?cmpid=Newsday_Now
  23. newsday.com 3000 deer will be slaughtered on Long Island. I can't paste the link for some reason, but do a search on newsday.com, it will come right up.
  24. With the snow on the ground, I followed deer tracks. They all led into the thickest nastiest mountain laurel I have ever seen. I couldn't even walk through it. I got in about 10 feet, and had to back out. One deer was bedding down in thick laurel, 30 feet off the main road. I walked by this area 100 times over the years. Never knew it was a bedding area.
