  1. 3J has been slow for years. I'm not sure why they give out DMP's to everyone. I see maybe 1-2 deer the entire season. I went scouting today, and I saw nothing. No sign at all.
  2. How do you hunt mountain laurel ????????? My friend the hiker told me he always sees deer in the thick mountain laurel. So I went hiking with him today. It was thick in there. 20-30 yard visibility at most. Mountain laurel, and other low bushes. I saw some droppings, so there in there. But I usually hunt from the ground, no stand. I prefer to hunt in the big woods, with 200 yard visibility all around me. Never hunted the thick stuff, he assures me there in there. How do you hunt through the thick stuff ? The line of site is so limited.
  3. It's small season too. Maybe someone got a rabbit.
  4. 71 yo, and using the internet. I'm impressed !
  5. I believe it scares away the deer. They know something is wrong.
  6. Every Blur ages out gracefully.
  7. At least I'm honest about it. 19-20 minutes unloaded, on blacktop. With a back pack, and rifle, it'll be 1/2 hour. Maybe more through the woods.
  8. Come on guys, I just blasted out another 19m50sec mile.
  9. OK: Let's start. I just blasted a 19 minute mile. I'll do another one later today.
  10. By that time, the season is OVER.
  11. I started scouting last weekend, and I'm realizing, I am 20 lbs over weight. Had a hard time walking up a mild incline, and that was with no gear, no rifle, and sneakers. There is no way I can go in as deep as I need to, or even carry out a deer. So this is my plan. I have 6 weeks to do it before rifle season. Start walking 1+ miles every night. Then slowly increase it to 3 miles. Then to walk with my big heavy boots. Then heavy clothes as it gets colder. Maybe even towards the end, I'll walk with my back pack loaded with a 10 lb weight. I'd like to walk with my rifle, but I'd get arrested around here. No one under 50 yo should answer this, as you'll realize it's easy to get out of shape as you get older. Especially with a desk job for 40+ hrs a week.
  12. The big question is, do you eat what is remaining, or leave it ?
  13. I wear the electronic ear muffs. Opening day, all the sudden, it sounded like a freight coming through the woods. Crashing, banging, all the sudden there is a deer running towards me full speed. She practically jumped over me. Within 5 feet, at full speed. She was spooked. All I could do is watch her run off into the woods behind me. My heart was pounding, like never before. She finally stopped about 200 yards behind me, and all I could see is a white tail.
  14. When I lived in Mountaindale, my neighbor had a tame deer. It was a lost fawn that would have died. They took it in, and it became their pet. I don't know what ever happened to the pet, or how many hunting seasons it survived. I was a kid back then, and wasn't into hunting.
  15. My friend owns a few acres, infested with ticks. He brought 5 chickens, and they roam around all day eating every insect in sight. He has no more ticks, and the mosquitos are much reduced. His dog hasn't gotten 1 tick since the chickens cleaned up the bug problem. It's a minor PITA to get the chickens back inside the coop every night, but he says it's well worth it.
  16. And they made him look like a rock star. That's despicable.
  17. Why aren't the BP's arrested on trying to hire a hit man?
  18. What is with this massive flooding? My area is washed away.
  19. Do these birds migrate for the winter ? I can't imagine them finding enough insects during a really cold winter.
  20. That is cool. Never seen that before.
  21. The only prep I'm doing is buying ammo. .243 if I can find it !!
  22. We were cruising around Watkins Glen and saw the Seneca white deer. Middle of the night, and a white deer is in the middle of the rode, with 2 fawns. My non-hunting friends thought it was a goat. Not timid at all. They stood in the road, and hung out while we watched them. Looks like they had a rough winter. Although scrawny, they are pretty cool looking.
  23. What is in season now, till the end of April? I may want to go small game hunting while I have some time off in April....
