LIVE From The Woods 2020 - Let's hear stories and see some pictures!
Moho81 replied to Marion's topic in Deer Hunting
I just looked on the DEC website and it mentions nothing about any illegal use of electronic devices just the usual no lights or lasers. I thought I had heard about the no drone thing but I couldn't find that either. I am going to keep looking because I honestly thought NYS allowed the use of two way radios and other forms of communication. -

I love all day sits but on day one when its light for 12+ hours that's hardcore! I wont start all day sits until mid to late October. -
All of archery season is already booked. We are taking reservations for the regular and late season though. Heat is extra. Overnight accommodations with food can be arranged as well. I’ll have my people call your people Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I just talked to a guy that lost a spot last week Monday! I couldn’t imagine being that close to the season and lose a hunting spot. He put in a brand new food plot and everything. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

This reminds me to pick up a book for the hunting season. I'll have to check out the local library.

They don't sit for long that's for sure. I think my first sit with my daughter at 5 years old may have been 45 min before she had enough but she was super curious about hunting and really wanted to come with me one time and how could I possibly deny her that! It took me 5 years before I was able to get a deer when she was with me. I missed one with the bow and never had one in front of us with the gun until last year but she kept wanting to come out.

Plenty of fantastic advice already given, I started taking my daughter when she was 5 because she was really curious and wanted to go. This year she is 10 and has been counting down the days until the deer season. Here where some of my tricks to keep her happy and like others have said just remember when you have your child with you it's not all about the hunt it's more about spending time together and when they want to go back in it's time to go back in. Plenty of snacks (heck we now have lucky skittles we keep for when we need the deer to show up) Books to read or color Electronics with headphones. Weather its a game or a show or music Thermos filled with hot chocolate Sleeping bag to keep them warm. Don't forget those little bodies get colder a lot faster than we do I will also pull the @crappyice trick of saying "hey did you hear that over there" just to reinvigorate there enthusiasm During Bow season I will let her handle the range finder and tell me the distances to certain objects gives her a sense of importance Point out interesting things in the woods and talk about them Sometimes while hunting we will talk about where we want to stop for a treat on the way home as well. Its usually as simple as a Bag of chips and a pop from the local store, hot chocolate and a doughnut, two years ago I mentioned stopping for dinner at McDonalds and I kid you not that child was so excited she made up a song about McDonalds and sang it in a whisper for a good hour and a half. She had me laughing so much there was no way we where going to see a deer that day. Enjoy your time with him in the woods!

That and my range finder are in the bow case so as long as I remember the bow case I should be fine. If I forget the bow case then all bets are off.

I'm just going to wing it this year. Nothing is ready at all and I only have 2 days to get it ready. I think I am just going to toss all my gear in the truck and hope for the best.

Plexiglass that will slide up and down and will be pinned at the top.

Took this morning and evening to first shoot 8 rounds of federals 8 rounds of Remingtons and 8 rounds of Larry’s to see which grouped better. The federals did not group well out of the gun at all the Remingtons did ok but in all honesty Larry’s stacked them in a tight little 2”x2” group so this year I will be hunting with some of Larry’s finest hand loads and it would be an honor and a cool story to take a deer with these. The outer ring is a 4” circle and the filled in circle is one inch. The high three are one group to which I then adjusted the scope and hit the 1” circle 2 times on the last 2 shots at 100 yards. Did a ton of work this weekend and besides a few last min minor details the new stand is ready to go. Alivia worked hard right along my side all weekend as we framed in the windows, hung the door and did some painting. I didn’t take any pictures this weekend until late today when I realized I would want to have this moment, this weekend captured in the memory bank. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yep that’s the warehouse rack. We put the platform at 12’-6” and the finished floor is 13’. I used unistrut for some cross bracing then the floor is secured to the metal just as use said. I used Simpson rafter hangers with self tapping screws and wood screws. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Sorry for your loss

I saw a few other online places that had 150 grain as well but I didn’t necessarily want to rely on shipping. The regular season is closer than we think. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I’d be honored to shoot some reloads from a legend! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Thanks for the replies. I bought a box of each and will hit the range this weekend to see which one patterns better and to zero the scope in as well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Remington Core-Lok and Federal Power Shok both 180 grain

I am probably way over thinking things but with the way ammo is right now trying to find 150 grain bullets for my 30-06 is really hard. My local gun dealer has 180 grain in stock but my question is this... How big of a difference is there with bullet expansion between the two when shots are mostly at 100 yards or less? Would the heavier 180 grain bullet not expand as much as the lighter weight 150 grain?
