How bad was the rain in the Southern Zone
WNYBuckHunter replied to Dave's topic in General Chit Chat
Just temporary flooding and ponding in my area (Eastern Ontario County/Western Livingston). We had such a good spell of dry weather that the streams and lakes were down to normal levels when the rain started a couple of days ago. Its not that wet, you should be able to mow. -
Yep, lots of artifacts on there. I almsot forgot, theres a small park in Cuylerville, not far from Letchworth where theres a tree that has a pretty significant story about it. Kind of neat to see. Heres the story... http://www.flickr.com/photos/dangler/4927805789/#

Part is in Livingston county and part is in Wyoming county

By that I mean it gets the youth out there for a couple of extra days. I wouldnt presume to know that its necessarily a tool to get kids out into the woods for the very first time, more like a tool to possibly give them a better opportunity at the game and hold their attention. Alot of the time kids attention span is determined by success, especially if they havent been taken out into the woods for years beforehand. If you can get them a good chance at a doe that isnt pressured, well you have a better chance at them becoming a hunter for life. Just because thats not how you were brought into hunting, doesnt mean its not valid. Like I said its not like NY is the first to do something like this, and its not even the first youth season in NY, so whats the problem with it? Other than you dont think it will do any good. Ill see if I can find any numbers for you from other states when I have a chance. I am interested to see exactly what other states have come up with too.
-
Yeah, youll love it. We go 4 or 5 times each year at least. Its a great place to just get away from things and have a picnic or go hiking, we also camp there once or twice a year.
-
That is something that I have been known to often say over the years. Anyone who thinks they really own the land, should just try to withold their school taxes or town or city property taxes. Real quick you will recieve notification from the real landlord demanding his "rent" and clarifying who really owns it. Also, if you think that you even have some kind of control over it, just try building a garage that doesn't conform to the local zoning regulations. You just might be surprised how much they have to say about where and what and how you are going to build it. And perhaps if you have no conforming location for it, they may tell you that you can't build it at all ..... lol. On the other hand, you do get the right to take on all the liabilities related to the property. Yep. Dead on Doc. I know it didnt really have to do with the topic at hand, it was kind of along the lines of the deer not being owned by anyone, and I just thought it might be an interesting talking point.

What's Everyone Doing for the 4th of JULY
WNYBuckHunter replied to Dave's topic in General Chit Chat
Most years I have a pretty big party with flashy, noisy favors, but this year we are going to skip out on those and just have a semi-quiet cookout with family and a few friends on the 3rd, then just go watch some fireworks with the kids on the 4th. -
Heres a pic of the bridge, as you can see, its not your average train bridge lol
-
The bridge isnt just ties, there are catwalks up there for maintenance and the trains have to cross at something like 5 or 10 mph, you can walk almost as fast as they go. Also, there is plenty of room between the sides of the trains and the catwalk area. Ive stood on that bridge and taken pictures of trains passing over it. Ill see if I cant dig up some of the pics of it and from on it.

The youth turkey season seems to work, I see no reason why a youth deer season wouldnt be the same type of thing. I highly doubt non hunting parents are going to take their safety course and buy a license, I would think that those kids would be taken out by an adult they know or maybe are related to that hunts.I dont really understand your blind, pointless flailing comment as many other states run successful youth seasons, NY has a successful youth turkey season and there are many other examples out there that show plenty of participation in the youth seasons.

Theres nothing in the park that you would be disappointed with, see all of it. You can walk across the train bridge, but Im not sure how old your kids are, its a pretty rough hike up to the tracks and there are no safety measures, as its an active railroad. The view from the bridge is worth it though. One trail that really gives great views is the Wolf creek trail. Also, the ice cream shop at the dam overlook has pretty good Perrys ice cream, which is made locally. If you get lunch in the park, there is a little resteraunt near the lower falls that has pretty decent food. Up in Geneseo there is a warplane museum. Its small but cool if you are into that kind of thing. In Leicster there is NY International Raceway, which is a drag track. If I think of anything else, Ill let you know. Oh, if you are going to be out that way for a couple of days, Stony Brook park in Dansville is a great place to take a day trip as well.

I did the elastomeric on my popup, worked great and was alot less money than the fibered stuff. If I were to do it again, Id probably do the same thing as before, only use the tape sealant on the seams just for double insurance. Keep us updated on how yours goes.
-
I honestly dont believe its money or taxes most of the time. Burt, you started a real good topic here, and I am extremely interested in how different people answer it. To answer the question of who owns the deer, Nobody in particular. It doesnt really matter where they are standing, you dont own them, neither does Joe down the street, or your neighbor. They are a resource found in the state, for the state to utilize how it sees fit. We elect and indirectly employ people to oversee the resources of the state. Heres another point to ponder. You dont own your land, you lease it. The government can take it away from you whenever they see fit, with or without compensation.

So my new camper is in need of the roof being sealed up, so I started doing the research on the best way to go about it. What I found is a relatively inexpensive, permanent way to seal the seams on the roof that is pretty simple to boot. I would actually suggest doing this on any camper, no matter how old or new it is. Some of the newer, higher end campers have it done before they leave the factory. Its a product called Eternabond, and it is basically a rubberized, material backed sealing tape. Install is pretty easy, you just clean the area on either side of the seam, leave the old sealant in there and lay the Eternabond over it. You then use a steel 2 inch roller to roll it down, which activates the sealer/adhesive and there ya go. If you have an aluminum skin roof, you can then paint over the aluminum and Eternabond with Kool Seal and youve got a fully rubber coated roof with seams you dont have to worry about for 20+ years. If you already have a rubber roof, you just install the Eternabond and youre all set. If you ever get a hole or tear in your rubber roof, just use some Eternabond to mend it and youre good to go. It can be used around any seam on the RV, as well as to cover screw heads and seal up screw holes when you add something to the camper. Below is a link to the least expensive place to get it. I ordered 2 rolls of the 4" x 50' and one roll of 2" x 50' and it came out to less than $150 shipped. Not a bad price to pay for peace of mind. http://www.roofingsupplyusa.com/Eternabond-RoofSeal-White.html

Fantail, what are you planning to do for the roof job? Does yours have an aluminum skinned roof or is it a rubber roof?

Doc, I know of your story with the idiots taking advantage of your land, and understand the issues with people taking advantage of others' hospitality. Honestly though, if you had put your foot down right off the bat and told the guy that he could not be bringing a bunch of people with him, you probably would not have had the issues. Thats exactly what I mean about sticking to your rules, and it sounds like now you have a good handle on them. I dont assume anything when seeing posted signs, they dont even deter me from asking permission. The big farm I hunt is posted up tighter than a drum, but I still got access. The deterant (and I have experienced this) is when you knock on a door and the person looks at you and speaks to you like you are some kind of garbage when you ask permission. Ive been called every name in the book, yelled at, pushed and the whole 9 yards just for politely asking permission to hunt a tract of woods. Its not the reaction I get most of the time, but it does happen, and there is just no call for that kind of crap. Now take someone that isnt as enthusiastic about hunting as I am, and put them in that position once or twice and they are likely to just say forget it. -
Target practice on State Land
WNYBuckHunter replied to erussell's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
At least some of it is worth something. If you reload and have those calibers, its free brass. The steel 762 is pretty much junk though. -
MMMMM, it might make a great fawn-due

I actually think this says it all. I have always believed that getting kids involved in other outdoor activities will give them MORE reasons to give hunting a try, than issuing a kid a gun or bow and have hunting as their only outdoor experience. Lets face it, be it a special season or not, hunting, especially deer hunting from a stand can be quite boring for a youngster. Combine this with hunting in an area where you don't get to see deer every day out, and it makes for a long, dreary day for a kid. Take them hiking on a good nature trail where they can see all sorts of critters and it will make for a way more enjoyable day for them. At the same time it will get them into a better frame of mind in regards to fitness. We have enough hunters out there who can't walk 150 yards to their stands without the need of ATV's. I don't think we need anymore. Having them realize that walking is a part of the hunt will make them way more aware of their surroundings and better hunters, too. I can agree with that wholeheartedly. My daughter has been raised going on "nature walks", fishing, camping, and hunting. She thoroughly enjoys the outdoors, but it is getting to be a bit of a challenge to keep her away from the video games and TV shows. She is very excited that she doesnt have to wait so long to be able to start hunting since they lowered the age.

Steve where should we sent the 50% of workers who pay no federal tax? Or do you think the rest of the tax payers should foot the bill for them? I think those coconuts got in their boats and came here so we could support them. So 50% of workers pay no federal tax, the gov't misappropriates our tax dollars, most of the state gov't, county and local gov'ts are in debt. You think this is a good system? Who pays for all this mess the tax payers.Dave Nope, never said it was an efficient system, only that it's the system that is here to stay. Constantly bitching about it really won't solve anything. You can vote different people into office, but in the long run nothing changes anyway. This is part of living in a democracy which most of you cherish, yet are dissatisfied with anyway. What can I tell you guys other than to try to look for a place that might be better? Your forefathers came here and obviously liked what they saw and stayed. If you now don't like what this country has become, no one is keeping you prisoner here. Good luck finding something better. So nobody is supposed to complain or express their dissatisfaction with the faults of our system? We are all supposed to fall in, lock step and never even try to change things for the better? You think that this government will always be the same? Wow steve, you dont strike me as a roll over and quit kind of guy, but maybe I have misjudged you. Im starting to think that you arent much of a student of history though. So how does one change things in your opinion?? You vote someone else into office, try to tell others which way they should vote maybe? Write letters to your representatives? Has any of this changed things to EXACTLY the way you want them to be? There are plenty of different opinions on any issue under the sun in this nation. You guys realize you will never change everyones mind, don't you? No, I don't roll over and quit, but I DO realize that society changes it's attitude on many things and will change some more in the future and sometimes for the better and sometimes not. All the crying in the world won't change these peoples mind into going back to the "old days" like many here want. When all of us old farts are dead and gone, the next generation will carry things forward the way they see fit for better or for worse. Only so much we can do to change things or keep things the same. The prior generation probably thought they were better than us, and now we think we are better than the next generation. The same story told over and over just like a broken record. You got part of it, get out there and vote, write your reps, make your voice heard. Of course things arent going to turn out EXACTLY the way I would like them to be, its not realistic to think that everything would be perfect, or perfect in my mind. I dont try to change everyones mind, but if I can make some of them think about things, maybe even see things in a different light, I feel like I made a difference. I can say that there have been some issues that I have spoken my mind about, written my reps, etc and things turned out the way I wanted them to. While my letter alone was not the catalyst for that change, it was part of it. I did my part, and thats all you can do. Taking up the attitude that you have no effective voice is the same as rolling over and giving up. BTW, my history comment has nothing to do with things going back to "the old days". Im 35, I wasnt there for the old days.
