Target practice on State Land
WNYBuckHunter replied to erussell's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
There would have been twice as many if you woulndt have cleaned the other ones up. Its a bummer that the rest of us have to deal with such slobs. You get any good brass out of it or just all shotshells? -

I wouldnt call that selfish at all bubba, you are letting others hunt. Like I said, my original comment was taken to an extreme, I never said you should just open it up to anyone. Be choosy with who hunts it and stay tight to your rules. Careful with charging others to hunt though, as the law says, you then become liable for them getting hurt, etc. As far as the guys that quit, a couple had other reasons and the lack of hunting areas was part of it, one was almost shot by another hunter on state land, tried for a couple of years to find something private and finally just gave it up. I dont really understand it either, I hunt alot on state land, have almost been shot and gone many seasons eating tag sandwich, but I have kept going. In any case, lack of available land to hunt is a big reason for hunters leaving or not joining the sport. -
The name of the show is Animal Planet Investigates: Captive Hunting Exposed, here is the schedule all played out apparently. You might be able to find it on Hulu or something like that if you really want to see it. http://animal.discovery.com/tv-schedules/special.html?paid=15.15976.130237.0.0 Its a smear piece produced by the HSUS, an organization that is nothing but nonsense to begin with. They even picked the name of the organization to fool people into thinking they are associated with the local Humane Society that actually helps animals and runs many animal shelters, re-homing shelters. I honestly dont understand why they are allowed to get away with it. Animal Planet has turned into a bunch of garbage in the last few years. Its too bad too, it started out as a pretty cool channel to see animal documentaries on, almost like Nat Geo is now.

That would be a cold day in Hell......I believe I can speak for many...many land owners on that one....We didn't bust our humps and sacrifice and aren't paying high taxes for someone else to use our property....Seriously?! ??? So if someone were to ask your permission and abide by your rules, you still wouldnt allow them to hunt? Seems pretty selfish to me. That is the attitude that is killing our sport. While I dont agree with erussell that the youth seasons are a waste of time, I wholeheartedly agree that lack of access to anything but state land is probably the #1 cause for people to quit the sport. I dont agree with the government forcing anyone to open their land, but maybe some tax or other incentives for landowners to open up their land (like done in other states) would go a long way. Do you own land? Do you let others on it to hunt? If so, can I hunt there I hunt my fathers land, and yes others have permission to do so. Can you? Id have to say no, there are enough of us that do already, its a pretty small tract adjacent to another small tract that I have permission for. I also hunt a farm thats very large, and I have permission to bring others out for predator hunting, etc. If we can put something together next season, we will. Im not saying grant full access to just anybody or you are a selfish a-hole here fellas, but if you want to take what I said to an extreme, have at it. : Sorry, but I think that people that prohibit anyone but themselves, regardless of anything, to hunt their land are part of the problem that is driving people away from hunting. You hear it all the time on here, guys that cant find anywhere to hunt, cant gain permission, etc etc. I know guys that have given hunting up because they dont have anywhere but state land and they cant afford leases, etc. Honestly, what is the problem with what I suggested? Tax based incentives for land owners to allow X number of people to hunt their land per year. If you dont want to participate, you dont have to. Its done out west, it could be done here as well. If you are worried about people following the rules, its simple really, they agree to follow your rules or they arent allowed to hunt. They break them, they arent allowed back, etc etc. -
Same here - would like to see some of the "plenty of others" pics. Thanks Yep, more pics from that camera, how about even a complete picture, normal size. No trail cam takes pictures in that small of resolution, and they all have a time and date stamp. Smells like normal BS to me, maybe Im wrong. Probably not.

Steve where should we sent the 50% of workers who pay no federal tax? Or do you think the rest of the tax payers should foot the bill for them? I think those coconuts got in their boats and came here so we could support them. So 50% of workers pay no federal tax, the gov't misappropriates our tax dollars, most of the state gov't, county and local gov'ts are in debt. You think this is a good system? Who pays for all this mess the tax payers.Dave Nope, never said it was an efficient system, only that it's the system that is here to stay. Constantly bitching about it really won't solve anything. You can vote different people into office, but in the long run nothing changes anyway. This is part of living in a democracy which most of you cherish, yet are dissatisfied with anyway. What can I tell you guys other than to try to look for a place that might be better? Your forefathers came here and obviously liked what they saw and stayed. If you now don't like what this country has become, no one is keeping you prisoner here. Good luck finding something better. So nobody is supposed to complain or express their dissatisfaction with the faults of our system? We are all supposed to fall in, lock step and never even try to change things for the better? You think that this government will always be the same? Wow steve, you dont strike me as a roll over and quit kind of guy, but maybe I have misjudged you. Im starting to think that you arent much of a student of history though.

No doubt this would cause an uprising by landowners if the Government did something as STUPID as this . Landowners are liable if someone gets hurt on their property . And land owneres are going to be forced to let hunters that they don't want on their property ? That's just plain NUTS ! Dead wrong eddie, as a landowner, you are NOT liable for someone getting hurt on your property. Better check the laws my friend. DEC even has a hand out you can take with you when trying to get permission explaining the law. Heres the proof for ya....down toward the bottom under "Money and Liability" http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/8371.html "Q. Is posting required to protect landowners from liability? A. No. Whether the property is posted or not, the General Obligations Law protects landowners from liability for non-paying recreationalists on their property. Because of this protection, recreational liability lawsuits against rural landowners are uncommon. Recreational activities covered include: hunting; fishing; organized gleaning (picking); canoeing; boating; trapping; hiking; cross-country skiing; tobogganing; sledding; speleological (caving) activities; horseback riding; bicycle riding; hang gliding; motorized vehicle operation for recreation; snowmobiling; non-commercial wood cutting or gathering; and dog training. This protection does not apply in cases of willful or malicious failure to guard or warn against dangers. Q. May the owner or lessee charge for hunting, fishing, or trapping on the posted property? A. Yes, but charging for access removes the liability protection granted to the landowner by the General Obligations Law. To learn more about landowner liability see the link for Cornell University's publication "Recreational Access and Owner Liability" under Links Leaving DEC's Website in the right hand column at the top of this page." -

So where did you read that...for what I said and I believe I MAY have been the only one to bring it up ...is it would be unsafe to have gun hunters ( in experienced at that).... in the woods with camo clad bow hunters and there should be MANDATORY orange Then here is another thing to consider...the bow hunter that shoots a "trophy Buck....to have it run into the path of a Muzzle loader hunter and shot before it gets a chance to expire from the arrow....Ooohhh not seeing any problems with that for an early ML hunt during bow season : Stop being so paranoid, I wasnt referring to anything you said. I myself said that it would be silly to have the youth season at the same time as when adults can hunt deer, regardless of what weapon they can use. If its a "youth hunt" then only youths should hunt. Oh, and no, I am not seeing those as issues with an early ML hunt. Sounds like more "youre shooting my deer" nonsense. Of course, I dont hunt a WW2 battlefield like you seem to. -

In no way do I think it will be the savior to hunting, but like I said before, it will be a piece of the puzzle. There is no, and will never be one single "magic bullet" to solve the problem. -
I think what eddie is trying to say is that a feeder brings the deer into a much smaller zone than your typical food plot. The advantage to that is a no brainer. Have you ever hunted a food plot, or farm field or any large sized food source for that matter? Deer rarely come in on the exact same trails every day or at the same times. Ive been in situations many times where Ill have 5 stands just off of a field and no matter what stand I sit in, the deer always seem to pick a different trail that day. Now when you are setup over a bait pile, or feeder, you can cover the entire area plus some of the travel routes into it with a bow. Plus, if you put the feeder on a timer, you can try to time the deer to come in within a certain time frame. Not the same thing as planting a food plot, not even close. Just my opinion though.

Congrats Dave, that sounds like a great Father's day gift to me!

I still don't understand or see the need for the whole youth hunt day's. Do you agree with the Youth Turkey hunting weekend? Same thing. I still dont understand why it would be such a big problem for some of you guys. Not that I have a problem with kids hunting deer, but what's the use of a 2 day hunt for kids. Where you going to put it, the weekend of the 1st day of gun? in the middle of bow season during the rut? These are the only two viable options in my opinion for success for the kids. Bow hunting is already hard enough without someone running around scaring the piss out of the deer shooting at them with a gun in the middle of the season. And 1st day of gun is not even worth comment. I have an Idea why don't people with kids who can hunt take them out during the regular deer season like my Dad did. Why should people with kids inconvinence the rest of the hunting world that is spending a turd load of money to hunt. So I call BS on the whole kids hunting days. If they are of legal age to hunt theey can hunt all they want during the open season. First of all, the proposed youth hunt is 3 days, in very early October (Columbus Day weekend) when kids have a 3 day weekend. The weather that weekend is usually pretty warm. The deer are calm and in feeding patterns, so it would make for a nice weekend of hunting for the kids without the pressure of full on gun season. Guess what, the kids licenses cost money, just like yours does, and you are inconvenienced how exactly? We cant even hunt that weekend as things stand now, so NOTHING is being taken away from you. Seriously, I have to say that most of the crap that people who are against the proposed youth season are spewing is nothing but greedy, selfish crap. All I hear is "it will be an inconvenience" or "they will be shooting at everything that moves". Please, get over yourselves and see that if something isnt done, at some point in the future, hunting will be a thing of the past. Dont believe me? Look at the hunter numbers in NY over the years. -
Yeah shes not in that bad of shape now that Ive looked it over thoroughly. Just have to seal the roof seams, which Ill be doing with Eterna-bond, then I am going to seal the seams on the front panel with Eterna-bond as well. Next, Ill pull the bed and water tank out of the front and replace the floor with marine grade plywood, and replace the wall panels in the closets with luane. After that, Im going to put new flooring in and put it back together. Ill have less than $500 into it and a couple of weekends of work. No big deal. Seeing as blue book on it is over $6k and I paid $2500, Id say I got a great deal.

I wonder if it killed the fawn, or found it dead and carried it away. Kind of neat story though.

Yes it is a gun hunt, but if you are making a weekend a special youth season, it would only make sense that adults could not be hunting at the same time, regardless of weapon. -

Look on Archery talk and get a used sight and release, its the only way you will stay in that budget. What about arrows, broadheads, tuning, string wax, serving lube, a quiver, stabalizer, peep, string loop? Sounds like you might need to open that budget a little.

On the site of the proposal http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/draftdeerplan0611.pdf on page 35 they have a graphic that states: Youth hunt - Columbus Day; concurrent with bow. Am I mis-reading or misinterpreting that? I read it as both activities happening at the same time. No, you are right, I missed that little tid bit. That part makes no sense at all. -
I can vouch for the Remington 700 as well. I have a SPS-V with the 26 inch bull barrel and its a tack driver, plain and simple. I have a couple of different bi-pods for it and a Vortex Crossfire scope. I have probably less than $800 into it as a brand new purchase on all components and It shoots sub MOA groups at 200 yards all day long with factory ammo off of the bi-pod and bags.

Thanks Doe! Feels great to have a camper again! Im doing the same thing now, beer in hand, porterhouses on the grill, but Im at home lol. Now for the down low... A couple of months ago, as many of you know, I sold my old popup and bought an ATV. Well, about a week after I bought the wheeler, I started feeling a little guilty for buying it. I was thinking of it like I was taking something away from the family and being selfish. Have I ever told you how much I hate being grown up?? Anyway, I started thinking about listing the ATV and trailer on Craigslist, and the other day I went ahead and did it. To make too long of a story short, a guy came this morning and put his money down for the wheeler and trailer, and as luck would have it, I found the deal on the camper. Now, the camper had some leaks and water damage, and the people that I bought it from got screwed on it last year. They paid something like 6 or 7 grand for it and then discovered the damage. They ended up taking a big loss on it, and I felt a little bad for them, but I gave them what I felt was fair for the camper. I have some tearing down to do, a roof to coat and floor areas to replace, but nothing I cant handle. I figure Ill put about another $1000 into it and have a camper that will last a long, long time. The Durango tows it like a dream, as it only weighs about 3800lbs dry. The owners threw in everything they had for it, including the weight distribution system and a full camper cover brand new in the box. Here she is...
