Hey Guys , For the past number of years Been putting up ladder stands because they tend to be more secure ; downside is , they’re a pain to put up and take down unless you have help . Also , for the first time ever , I was ticketed this past offseason for keeping my stand up on public land . By law , I know you’re supposed to but had never been caught before so seems like It’s even More impractical to take up and out down a ladder stand each and every season where I hunt . So , I’m thinking of switching to a climber . I’ve never used one before . Do you like them ? Any brands or makes you woulD recommend ? Thanks , hope everyone’s safe and well

Scary times were livin in right now aren’t they -
I grew up using my Grandfathers old 410 , first gun I ever shot matter Of fact but we used it for squirrels only. I would not use it for deer . could it kill one? Sure but more than likely you’ll wound it , much better to use something that will do the job with a decently placed shot .

You can get it up in the air by yourself ? Wow that must be tough those suckers are heavy !! I had one other guy help me and was still tough to suspend it , directions call for three guys but that’s hard to coordinate

Setup my 16’ ladder stand yesterday and as always, what a workout ! I humped the set and top ladder portion in while my buddy jumped the other 2 sections of ladder and the tools . It was ok but but tough especially since it was a good 15-20 minute walk in. Anyone have any advice on what they’ve found makes it easier to jump those suckers in? Thanks

There’s some state land in Wurtsboro right off of 17 that you can hunt ; also, you can do Stewart over by Newburgh and sterling forest area -
Very nice , congrats !

Hiked in yesterday to setup a drip bag , possible stand setups and scope out the bedding area and I found 2 major runs in a line leading to this : looks like a bedding area and body imprint to me, what do you think ? Kinda hard to tell but maybe?

Thank you Sir -
I believe there is a bedding area close by , I saw a faint trail leading to some evergreens which looked like it could be but not sure , didn’t wanna bump anything so I didn’t get too close . Should I go in closer ? Btw , that landline you see is An old porcelain dish buried ; deer musta scraped down and discovered it and started pawing at it lol

I’m doing the same thing myself this weekend with a ladder stand for opening of rifle

Do you have to go to the local town hall or can you get them anyplace that sells a hunting license ? -
The lost art of still hunting
Northcountryman replied to Northcountryman's topic in Big Woods Hunting
I’m gonna give it a try at some point this season but not before thanksgiving I think unless I’m way upstate . I worry about safety in the Cats unfortunately. I would like to try it though in a well scouted area and combine it with some shirt sits here and there . Contrary to popular belief , deer tend not to leave their home range during rifle season, sightings go down after opening weekend cuz they feel the heat and the pressure , go mostly nocturnal and stay mostly concealed during the day . This may be the only method to be successful in certain cases but I’ll bet it’s hard as hell to spot em!! I wonder how many times I’ve walked past a buck over the years hiding in the brush or a thicket and had no idea as to their presence !! -

Would you hunt an un familiar piece of land via still hunting , without input and advice from a friend or fellow hunter? I could see myself scouting an area first and maybe still hunting it after I’ve found sign and/ or promising spots but to hunt it blind via still hunting , not sure -

Also, how do you know when you’re I. A hunting area? Previous experience?Sign? Or just an intuition? Thanks -

Great advice, so what’s a wind checker anyway? Never heard of it -
Idont know much about still hunting , rarely do it in the Catskills , mainly because I have very little trust in other hunters but in a I get region like Adirondacks , I would imagine you could get away with it and it’s probably almost essential considering a much lower deer density . The biggest concern in terms of success is making noise . Its so hard to walk without making noise that a deer will detect ; in areas where a lot of leaves and branches are down, near impossible .How would one hunt areas like that via still hunting ?

Hey Guys , my girlfriend has one of those Louisiana Catahoula Leopard hounds that is in dire need of some training . He’s about 2 yrs old , big strong and sharp but very stubborn and strong willed . IMHO she could make an excellent hunting dog , does anyone know any trainers in the Catskills Hudson Valley region ? Thanks , David

Great pics, what region is this ?

I was thinking about checking out ozonics as a cover this year in my stand

Yeah you’d be surprised how many people still hunt; guys at my club say that 30 yrs ago, there’d be trucks lined up and down the road on opening day. Although it’s no longer like that, I saw a lot of guys in the woods first weekend, guys everywhere. As far as hunting being a dying sport, it is and it isn’t

Found a spot off a trail with a lot of scrapes and a few rubs. Seemed the scrapes were kind of concentrated in a line parallel to the trail and rubs nearby too. My question is , should I setup right over this scrape line or just off of it? I see a lot of oaks in the area and beech and about 200 yards away, looked like an evergreen stand . Also, some old apple trees nearby maybe 30 yards from most of the scrapes but looked dead to me . What do you think? Thanks so much, Northcountryman
