  1. Growing up, I used to fish the osgood river just below Meachem lake ; my grandfather had one of those old platform camps around Hays Brook; what part of region 5 is that? Thanks, David
  2. Well said Shaun, I agree 100%! If Im out and seeing and marking squirrels which the vast majority of the time, the call is unnecessary; if not, then it may be worth a shot
  3. Deer are not overly crazy about the black walnuts right? Supposed to be kinda bitter
  4. Calls and rattling can be overdone these days IMHO; not saying they dont ever work but I think in heavily pressured areas, the deer become wise to the sounds
  5. Is the can effective? Ive heard mixed reviews about its use
  6. Being relatively new to the sport, Ive only taken a couple bucks and a couple does, all of them in the early to mid morning; although Ive seen a few deer at dusk, its either not beenr a shooter, conditions werent right for a good shot, or maybe just bad luck. Having said that, I would say that magic time is early am for me, anywhere from 7:00-8:30:what about you?
  7. Anyone ever use those the different squirrel calls that you can buy now? Ive never used any and have had success without but messed around a few times with scraping the edge of 2 quarters together to imitate squirrels eating nuts to amuse myself(I read somewhere that thatcan work to attract them); however, didnt seem to work and maybe I was doing it wrong anyway, any thoughts? Thanks, David
  8. So normally I like to do my scouting in late summer, september at the latest but this year, have just been way too busy to get out; Im hunting new property cuz just joined a club and havent walked the property since last february. Im going to go out this weekend and walk around to try to find a couple spots for a stand and my ground blind. Any advice for how to use my time as productively as possible without burning spots when the season starts in a few weeks? Thanks David
  9. Depending upon the limited time I have, I sight in my rifles once before the season, usually sometime in september, then during the season only if I decide to take 1
  10. Been up there fishing, never hunting, lotsa hikers there, not sure if it would be worth it, beautiful place though.
  11. Excellent story, very enjoyable, I closed my eyes and pictured the swamp before seeing the pic!! Thanks you
  12. My district posted on the website last night, one of those rare snow days where you know about it the night before so dont have to wake up early to check to see if youre off or not, gotta love that!!!!
  13. Are you still seeking new members? I live outside of Monticello and that would be quite convenient for me
  14. Passed up on a spike this year, walked right past my blind. I was thinking about takin him but holding out for that 8 pointer i saw opening day!!
  15. Public land makes me nervous because of the uncertainty of who else is out there. I tend to slip in and dont move much, NO still hunting, afraid of getting shot. When walking out, make noise!
  16. Sweet, what part of the state does she live in?
  17. Thats nuts. I cant come close to that, but have hunted on public land and had dues point their gun at me thinking I was a buck. Thank God didnt pull the trigger
