  1. I like to be sitting 30 to 45 minutes before sunrise. Gives the woods a chance to settle down. It also gives me a chance to settle down. Last 300 yards to my stand is up a pretty good hill. Once I get settled in I can have a cup of coffee and a bite to eat and I'm ready to go when the sun comes up.
  2. Tis the season! Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  3. I worked in a large, private engineering firm as a structural engineer for 13 years. Worked crazy hours. Large projects, deadlines and stress. It was fine and exciting when I was in my twenties and early thirties but when my daughter was born I decided I had enough and needed more time with my family. I now work as a project manger for design and construction for a state agency. I'd probably be making more money now if I stayed in the private sector but I probably would have lost my sanity. I work better hours now, better benefits, more time off and flexibility and my family is thankful for it.
  4. When the bottom floods like that does it concentrate the deer in certain areas? When the water recedes does it take a while for the deer to return?
  5. Just stopped into the DEC office in Albany to get my license and they have a reproduction of the Lucky buck. 198-5/8". Impressive to say the least. Picture doesn't really do it justice.
  6. When hunting with the 12ga I would shoot a couple boxes of 5 before the season to check zero and get the feel for it again. Got a new rifle this year. Put 30 rounds through it last weekend. Back in the safe until opening day. Will go out on a few random days throughout the year with the 22's and do some plinking. If I had a more convenient place to shoot (and more time) I would definitely shoot more often.
  7. Those things suck! Picking them off helps pass time while sitting in the stand.
  8. So what does everyone use to shoot off/sight in?. We shoot at a gravel pit off a makeshift bench and a lawn chair (the rest is usually fully on the bench) We don't care about MOA shooting. 2 inch at 100 off this setup and we are happy for hunting deer.
  9. Shot my 7-08 yesterday with 140gr ammo and my dad's 308 with 150 grain ammo and I can say the 7-08 was a joy to shoot compared to 308. From what I have read, the 7-08 performs similar to 308 due to greater ballistic coefficient with less recoil.
  10. Thanks Pygmy. That's what I'm hoping! After hunting for over 25 years with a 12ga, I'm hoping to prove that point! But I thought the 35 Remington was the best?
  11. Finally got the scope mounted. Nikon Prostaff 2-7. Took it out to the gravel pit yesterday. Got it on paper at 25 yards (first pic) and moved out to 100. Circled group was last 3 shots with Federal Premium Ballistic Tips. I'll take it. I would not call myself a marksman and I'm sure rifle shoots better than me. Check out our high tech bench set up in the last pic. Thanks all for your advice!
  12. The fact that she is smiling in the second pic means she gets it and even though you feel like an a-hole (I would too) she (probably) still loves you. Similar story, I remember going to the range with my dad as a kid. Sighting in Model 788 308 with look through scope bases. After sighting in the scope my dad wanted to zero in the iron sights. First shot, bottom of scope, right off the bridge of nose. Lots of swearing and lots of blood but he survied too.
  13. Where I hunt in Rennselaer County the ticks are pretty bad. I find myself picking them off my clothes after every trip into the woods and not only on the outer layers. It amazes me how they find their way through multiple layers of clothes and get to the skin. I have found several on my body after undressing but only one has actually been embedded. I take all my hunting clothes off on the deck down to my underwear and they stay outside in a plastic bin for the duration of the hunting season. This year I am going to try the Sawyer's for sure.
  14. Still mowing. Garden is still producing too. Picked six tomatoes and a bunch of peppers a couple days ago.
  15. One of my blinds is on the west side of a large hill. It is in the shadows until around 1PM. After freezing in the shadows all morning, when the sun comes around and warms me up in the afternoon, I usually can't help dozing off for a little nap.
  16. Who remembers the October 4th '87 snowstorm? Today is the 30th anniversary. Freak noreaster was supposed to just be rain but just cold enough for snow. Woke up here in Albany with about 6" of heavy wet snow. Got a lot more to south and east. Not a lot by noreaster standards but with all leaves still on trees, knocked out power all over for days. Weeks in some areas. Didn't have power at my house for a week. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  17. Came across this article today http://www.timesunion.com/news/article/South-Troy-man-fends-off-deer-getting-hooked-on-12232593.php#photo-14233025 Interesting thing is the deer was recovered dead a short distance away. What would cause a deer to do this and die? I never heard of a rabid deer. Is it possible?
  18. One loin roast, 2 lbs of ground and a package of stew meat left from the deer my dad got last year and we split. Gonna stuff the loin roast with roasted poblano peppers and provolone cheese, wrap with bacon and throw on the smoker for a BBQ we are hosting in a couple weeks. Probably whip up a batch of chili with the ground and stew meat if the weather ever cools down.
  19. Hot dogs with home made meat sauce and green beans out of the garden. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  20. Have my dad get a nice buck while I am in the woods with him. I was not able to hunt last year due to an injury and after quite a few deerless years he connected on a nice 8 point opening morning of gun. I'd like to see him do it again this year with me in the woods with him.
  21. I was there. Not front row though! Lower level about halfway back on right side. Great show - all the politics aside.....Second time I have seen him. Last time was in Albany in the early 2000's. Also saw "Pink Floyd" without Waters in Yankee Stadium in '94.
