  1. Great find on the Erie. Over a hundred years old and far superior in quality than anything you could buy today. Clean it up, season it and use it a lot! You'll be passing it on to your grand kids! Check out this cast iron forum. A lot of the site requires a paid membership but there is a general information page and lots of very knowledgeable cast iron nuts. http://www.griswoldandwagner.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=irongeneral
  2. Cast iron needs to be pretty well seasoned before thinking about cooking eggs in it. Cooking bacon and shallow frying (think country fried steak) are great ways to build up that seasoning. Also, the old pans a far superior to the cast iron you can buy today. The old pans were machined to remove the sand casting marks. Today's cast iron pans are not machined. That is why they have that rough surface. I have a a couple Griswolds and a Wagner that were my great grandmothers that are over a 100 years old and are smooth as glass and pretty much non-stick.
  3. Filet, crab cake, grilled shrimp and asparagus. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  4. Gordon Ramsey would be proud.Looks awesome!
  5. I have heard of that place. It is over near Walden Ave right? Might have to check it out next time I am out there.
  6. Worked out to about $10 a pound after trimming. Considering filet mignon is $15 per pound plus at the grocery, it's not a bad deal.
  7. Bought a whole beef tenderloin on sale today. Got two nice roasts (bigger one going on grill tomorrow for mother's day), five smaller filets for a dinner and a bunch of chain meat for a couple stir fry dinners. After breaking down and trimming up there was about 1 1/2 pounds of waste which still made the price per pound worth it. I could have cut the roasts down into some bigger filets but I prefer doing the roasts reverse sear on the grill. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  8. If you must ask....A friend of my dad owns a gravel bank which is where we go to shoot. Two weeks before gun opener we go to check zero on our rifles. For some reason we forgot our shooting rest and our lawn chair (we're very high tech). So we decide to just rest off my truck. I position my truck at a very precisely walked off 50 yards (we would then move back to 100). My dad says "I'll just rest off your hood". First shot I see gravel fall down about 30 feet up the bank. I said "What the hell were you shooting at!?" He replies "Oh shit I just shot your truck!" Lesson learned, what you see through the scope is not necessarily what you are shoting through - especially at short ranges.
  9. Surprised hearing about insurance companies dropping customers over claims. I can see for negligence but over acts of nature or occurrences that are totally out of your control, I don't get it. I've been with Amica (homeowner's and vehicles) since around 2000. My wife has totaled two cars in that time, I had the hood on my truck shot through by a .308 (don't ask), even had a rodent chew through the wiring harness of my truck that they covered to replace the entire wiring harness. All claims paid with no questions asked and in a very efficient manner. Guess I've just been lucky.
  10. My guess is random shingles needing replacement would fall under routine maintenance in their eyes and would not be covered.
  11. Looks like the stripers have made it to Albany. Quite a few boats off the Corning Preserve this morning. There was an even bigger cluster of boats at the Patroon Island bridge (past the railroad bridge in the distance).
  12. Shot - Evan Williams or Jim Beam. Beer - recently put a pretty good run on Sierra Nevada Hop Bullet but seems to be drying up as it was their spring seasonal. Love Hayburner when I am in Buffalo area.
  13. The property we hunt was selectively logged about 15 years ago. That fall was the best hunting we have had in the 20 years we have hunted it. The new undergrowth and tree tops definitely seemed to hold the deer.
  14. Looks like you got most of the rust with the CLR. I have never tried that. I would've done a simple soak in a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water for a few hours then hit it with a wire brush and then steel wool. This won't address the pitting but will get rid of the rust. I have restored a bunch of old cast iron pans and after a soak in a lye bath to dissolve all the built up carbon/organic residues, the vinegar/water bath cleans up the rust nicely.
  15. Gonna start my seeds this weekend indoors. I typically do 5 or 6 different peppers (hot and sweet), roma tomatoes, broccoli and cabbage. They will be ready to transplant outside end of May. Beans, radishes, lettuce, carrots and corn get sowed directly into the soil in late May.
  16. Murphy's Irish stout braised corned beef, cabbage, potatoes and carrots, whole grain mustard and horseradish on the side Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  17. Corned beef brisket with a can of Murphy's ready to go in oven to braise for 6 hours or so (one Murphy's for the brisket and one for me). Had to cut it in half to fit in the pot. I'll post up the finished product tonight. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  18. Gonna be in Myrtle in a couple weeks. We stop at the fishing dock in Calabash on way home and get 5 pounds of shrimp right off the boat to bring home and freeze. I don't eat shrimp but my wife is a shrimp junkie and says it is best she has had. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  19. Water. I'd love a house on a lake in the Adirondacks. I think some of you WNY guys think Erie or Ontario when you hear lake. ADK's are a totally different experience.
  20. I get the Bass Pro knockoffs. They are less expensive and you get a couple more in the pack than the yamamoto's
  21. Anyone been to Gene McCarthy's in the Old First Ward? I've been once, only for beers and wings though. I have heard they are known for their fish fries.
  22. Chuck roast cooked last night and reheated ready to go on the plate as soon as daughter and wife get home from piano. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  23. My forecast just increased from 8-12 to 10-16. 16-22 in the hills East and West. I'm heading to Myrtle Beach in 3 weeks and it can't come soon enough. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  24. Chuck roast in the crock pot with onions, potatoes and carrots to cook tonight and be reheated for tomorrow's dinner. Busy after school/work schedule on Mondays and Tuesdays. Can kill two birds with one stone tonight and not have to cook (just reheat) tomorrow. Leftover pot roast will be turned into a lunch and some shredded beef tacos later in the week. Tonight's dinner is just scrambled eggs and toast before getting my daughter to dance class. I won't bore you with that pic. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
