anyone out there hunting or is it to cold to hunt
landtracdeerhunter replied to sweet old bill's topic in Deer Hunting
We shoot most deer in tough conditions. Have for several years now. Really, the deer don't seem to mind this weather. Nothing like freezing your fingers while reaping the rewards of gutting a deer, LOL. -
Plot Not Getting Hit???
landtracdeerhunter replied to Pav2704's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Their starting to hit the food plots again here, after a 4 week stretch idle. Was a lot of food around. Now with the colder weather and snow fall, not so much -
Round two of more lake effect snow in progress. Some of these areas have more snow in two days, than was recorded all of last winter combined. When all said and done, some will have ninety inches on the level. The machinery being use for snow removal is jaw dropping. Stone quarry size. Keep it safe; good luck to all those affected. A light at the end of the tunnel this weekend. I remember snow like this back in 1966. Have pictures of the 1963 storm when I was just a lad. Of coarse, the all time 1977 blizzard. If their are more pics, please post them up. The news media has tunnel vision, as usual.

What an awesome afternoon hunt. Set up on a fresh cut corn field. My son was sitting on the radish. Snow started falling and the wind dropped.Gun was covered with snow. Had to keep wiping it off. Fawns started popping out just after 3;30. Crossed 15 yards to the front, right to left. Noticed one dark tarsels on one the large fawns.Just maybe, I could not be so lucky, LOL. Sure enough, a buck we call Chocolate, showed to the left of me. Sure was nice to see him again after a 2 year drought. Had no safe shot, so watched as he headed behind the fawns. He sprouted into one fine animal though. Another buck right behind. This buck wasn't near the size of Chocolate. I passed on him. Nice encounter on both animals. Get a text from my son. He has a nice doe down front. He asked me if he should shoot. I say, hell yes! Not long after, a shot rang out. I sat watching 7 other deer, but visibility had dropped in the falling snow, no safe shoot. Went up at 5 to help find the doe. Not much blood to follow on this deer. Laid about 47 yards, just inside the woods.

Plastic jackets should never be used more than once with grease pole strippers.

What a nice story. Congrats to you both!

This storm reminds me of the 2000 firearms opener, where we were hauling my sons 147" cow-deer out in heavy snow with lightning and thunder. Had the tractor stuck in the snow. I'll never forget that night.

Studies show a lot of human scent goes right out the head. Get one of those scent control head gear thingers. When you least expect it, it will happen. Now go out there, get a nice deer, and for pete sake, enjoy!

It could be on Monurday, and I'd be out, regardless. Don't worry though, DEC. will be changing it again, book on that.

That's some deep snow if it's anything like the flag poles you install, LOL.

You could count the shots on both hands, here by 10AM.. Afternoon sit, maybe seven shots. Way down from previous years. Can't identify, with an accurate reason at this point. My son said his location, sounded like a war zone in northern 9F. Pretty normal there.

Let the dog out little after seven, and an 8 point eating 100 yards away in the clover. I wouldn't shoot from the house, as that's not hunting to me. I also have more respect for the neighbor. Just nice to know, just maybe, he'll be around for the afternoon sit.

Yes, another firearms season is about to begin in the Southern Zone. Please be careful with firearms and treestands. Lets make this the safest year ever in New York. Enjoy your time afield, and last but not least; post your stories and deer here for all to enjoy. Good luck!

Hope one of them come in for you, Deerthug. Good luck! Will you take a nice doe?

Bear for the book with flint arrowhead
landtracdeerhunter replied to Huntswithstone's topic in Bow Hunting
Congrats on that big bruiser! Can you give a little more detail on the broadhead mounting on a modern arrow? -
The mature fawns this time of year, the mother graduates to the freezer. Earlier in the season, with younger smaller fawns, mom gets a pass. We try to do our part to keep the doe buck ratio in check.

Oh boy, now we can unlike our likes that we already liked, LOL. Do you like?
