  1. I agree. The beetle process works the best. Done alot or research on taxidermy.net and alot of people raise their own bugs in an old frig.. The inner noise bones are very fine, and will boil away. I skin the head and put it on a shed roof, letting nature run it coarse. I do wrap the rack in dark garbage bag, so the sun won't discolor it as bad. You can always tell a skull, that has been cooked in water. The inner nose bones are missing.
  2. Thanks for the reply. It's interesting how the son, father, grand father, and so on, can stick around on the same piece of land. We have seen this time and time again here. The genes stay in an area for a long time. The same shapes of the rack, right down to the same kickers, body sizes, can repeat themselves year after year. Congats on your harvest, and that sure was a nice job done on that skull. I'm working on my first, learning alot, as I go. Would like to take up taxidermy some day.
  3. I was thinking Rust Oleum in the quart cans. I have a 1940 Ford 2N tractor that I would like to paint the sheet metal in camo.
  4. Now theres some nice pics. Gets the old blood pumping.
  5. I was waiting for the leaves to stick in the paint when dry. I wonder if Rust-Oleum oil based enamels would work as well for swirling ?
  6. You did a super nice job. That is the way to mount the tail. Was never to keen on the salt way either. Had one in the freezer for about 3 years now. Don't even know if it's any good. Don't know if it any good? Maybe try. Thanks for posting and info.
  7. Always have some nice pics, thanks.
  8. Found my very first one Saturday. A little 2 point on a very heavily used deer trail. Mind you, I've been looking hard for years with not even a speck of bone. It seemed like a a 10 point to me, the way I felt. We had 10 deer in the field outside the house, on Saturday evening, 1 still wearing his headgear.
  9. Having a Crossbow section seperate from Archery, is no different than having a Muzzleloader section seperate from Riffle and Gun Discussions. It may, in fact, spur some very good discussions on the issue. Makes a common place to relate back to for past threads. Edit
  10. They look really good. Going to try them tomorrow night. Now I only wish we could lay around the pool here. Maybe in 4 months, give or take. Thanks for sharing.
  11. Thanks John, that was the problem. All my end. Like the new laptop, just got, have to understand it.
  12. Looks real nice. Attempting to do one myself. . How did they fasten the skull to the plaque?
  13. Nice. Will you use it for hunting too? Access some of those hard to reach areas, only by boat.
  14. Shooting a video by youself, while hunting is a challenge. I have shot some footage without a tripod, which is just to poor of quality to post. Investing in a tripod this year, that should help, I hope.
  15. Congrats on the harvest. Never to late to talk turkey. Opening weekend was the best where I hunt in Erie County, N.Y. The toms were responding well to calls but wouldn't commit. Depends on alot of variables. Got to use the call they want to hear, and that doesn't always work. Sure is fun, when you get one to respond though. Think the toms get educated rather quickly. Had a big one come in the second weekend, but not in range. Had a struting tom decoy out with 3 hens, that may have deter him.
  16. That is to cool, eating well on something. Thanks for sharing.
  17. Think that is a good idea. Have more questions than answers at this point. Research can go so far, experience picks up from there. A forum is always bound to go off topic. Hearing the pros and the cons to a subject is why I'm here. Don't need the bashing, but they seem to get the most views.
  18. Also wondered, if the deer is more likely to jump the bowstring with a crossbow. The one I have is louder than my compound.
  19. We did this many years ago on my dads farm. He always called it a poor mans fence. We cleared all the fields of the farm this way. I think it's great to see you using natural resources.( The workout isn't bad either, much better than a workout in some gym.)The rabbit population exploded in that area. We always had a spot to go hunting. Miss that rabbit stew, goooooood.
  20. Gives you an idea when to be out there so you can shoot them. Nice pics.
  21. My parents prefer the liver and heart over the rest of the meat itself. Believe that one. It is a delicacy to them. We have to aim so we don't damage any of these organs. Too bad it doesn't always work that way. I saved the intestines for sausage casings, but haven't made any yet.
