  1. I'll have to go back in the camp log and find numbers.. just came from butcher and the people that expect 60 lbs or more meat back from a 113lb yearling buck is unbelievable.... .
  2. That's here java and Corning .. you dont want them
  3. When you hunt hogs the sounder scatters and can and do breed 3 to 4 x a year. 6 to 18 in a little and ready to breed in 6 months. We would never be able to control numbers and in area they are now they are expanding.. the main reason they put a ban on hunting them is to catch them in pen traps as as group to eliminate them
  4. Historically elk bone were found in great numbers in the town of elma at various Indian site I worked on in wny, but not as many as deer bones in Batavia area where in did excavations as well.
  5. Had one walk thru in Humphrey few years ago rag horn bull no. Eartags... idk.
  6. You can do a poor man's den by falling a tree and then putting a tarp over it and putting more brush on top of tarp. Not as permanent as a pipe but will last few years.
  7. This one is from NY!! Its scientific, anyone can just weigh a deer on a scale...lol
  8. We use to take the old skidoo a d the ski-bouse and head back and cut a scotch pine as I got older we would just cut the top of the tree as the damn things kept growing...lol. so many time what looke like a decent tree from 20 ft below was a huge monstrosity when cut down super wide and crooked.. but always a good time to go cut bring back and decorate.. never a fan of the commercial trimmed and pruned tree..just seems fake / to commercial for me. But as I said your wins the prize for most Charlie brown I've seen!
  9. The problem with climbers is the spot I need to hunt from never has a suitable tree.. I have stands that tip down to the front and right because tree is so twisted.. not comfortable but can kill a deer from it every year.. Its better to be in the right spot to kill a deer that you might see , than to see a deer you might only be able to kill....
  10. Wow we always did the same but ours was never that Charlie brown.. do you look for that specifically or are all your trees that sad?
  11. This one is from the Avon bowhunters....
  12. I have a walkers used mostly when wet or snowy out really let you hear like it is crunchy out
  13. The rule is if your happy with buck you can shoot it. Dont compliance if someone shoots something bigger. I have one guy that use to shoot 1st legal buck he saw, after 5 or 6 years of that he decided to wait for a 2 year old. He took one.. he now waits for 3 year old and older.. it's a natural evolution. I also have an elderly hunter who always waited for nice buck. He now Shoots 1st legal buck he has chance at in gun..as it maybe last one he ever takes..though he still is picky in bow season.. they are happy makes me happy seeing people happy. It's a fun layed back. Camp and the comroderie is a lot of fun. I should of also added 1 bear and 2 coyotes this year as well 1st time ever with 2 coyotes..
  14. A game ear is very useful and the fact they cut out and become ear plugs when you fire a gun is added bonus
  15. A lot,!!! have taken an average of 18 deer a year off my.place for 25 years, this years tally is 6 buck and 9 doe so far.. I have 5 different family.groups of doe and 2 distinct groups of bucks the ridge runners and the bottom bucks. Add transient buck and again there are a lot. I have actively managed my places habitat for 23 years. That is key above all else imo i If you want to to know permanant never leave resident 0

    Name that Rub

Definitely bark stripping ..deer or moose seen rabbit damage when snow is piled up high as well
  17. Are you a visual or audio hunter??no I dont mean firing shots at sounds. I find my hunting success improved tremendously when I started hunting thick areas and had to start using my ears to hear an approaching deer before it suddenly would pop into view at 10 yards giving no opportunity to get ready for a shot. Since then I set most of my stands to allow the game to come in from behind me and show visibly after they pass. This allows me to hear get ready and when they appear I'm drawn and ready to shoot with bow. I got very frustrated seeing deer long range with a bow in hand and saying to myself I wish it was gun season.. gun season is a bit more visual for me as we tend to have that dam snow that makes everything quiet, it also makes it easier to pick out movement but that works in both directions hunting from a stand can help lessen that but hunting from the ground I dont think it gives me more of an advantage over the deers ability to see me.. Anyone else notice a difference as they mature as a hunter and in techniques used? I even have a game ear though I have excellent hearing it makes sounds even more recognizable. A squirrel sounds like a squirrel and not a deer.....
  18. I just turn my head when I hear something..
  19. I take all my stands down in feb.. throw a party everyone brings a dish and we go out walking, snowmobile, tractor and each take a few down before lunch..eat good and go back out after lunch for a few more. I take them down for safety. Straps break down in sunlight, trees grow and straps tear I have friends that hunt with me and I would hate to see a strap break and them fall and get hurt. I have stand that are 30 years old ..many have replacement straps cables or seat on them now. Easy to test them 2 ft off the ground in summer and replace what is nessassary.. leaving stands up is just a bad idea I know yo many people who have fallen by checking them in place from year to year..yes its work but safety is more important to me. I start in July, many will go back into same spot even same tree if in a good funnel. Adjustments are made to others as food and trail may of changed due to logging treefalls, lack of mast, ect. I can get up 3 or 4 a day if I have help to trim lanes. ( best thing I bought was a battery operated chainsaw pole trimmer.. ) by mid august I'll have them all set and have a policy of no ATV or walking around starting sept 1st. ( I let my neighbor ride my trails and he abides by this simple rule, as well as no ATV from april 1 till after Turkey season) this allows my woods to be quiet safe place as all the neighboring camps are setting stands up checking cams, riding atvs, walking dog, looking at fall leaves, shooting their guns ,ect. My place becomes a sanctuary due to their pressure.. little things that help imo.
  20. You could probabaly get away with less stands by being mobile but in my experiance setting stands early and staying out of woods is best way. So if you have a early season stand over an early producing pear or apple ,could you move it when the fruit is gone and put up say on a late producing oak or apple ..yes but again moving the stand is disturbance, as well as clearing lanes ect.. just makes more sense to me to have a stand in each location set in July and left alone.. simple walk in when time is right and hunt!! A lot of stands may only be good for a week or two early season on a field edge next to some crab apples when they are gone they game has moved 100 yards to corn field.. making a note book or chart on what trees are favored and when they tend to drop is helpful.. I have had my property for over 25 years and know what trees drop and when and move to favored areas as game shifts.. a good pair of binoculars and looking in tree tops in July will tell you which trees have not or not .. no sence of hunting an oak flat if there are no acorns that year...
  21. Also something to keep in mind when placing cameras in big buck areas , doesnt do any good if your going in every week or 2 weeks to check the cameras, disturbance is disturbance.. I prefer open feed areas where I dont care if they are night pics of big bucks I know what's in the area..and post season scouting shows me where stands need to be .
  22. I put up 36 stands a year and take them down every year. Some are never hunted but they will be placed back up.. options is key I agree you can burn out a few stands quickly that's why it's best to have options
  23. Cant cut and paste it for some reason but cuffs and collars has good article on this exact thing where a tip was given to dec about guy shooting 2 large buck, said he only shot one, ask where he hunted he told them, they went in and tracked other hunter to his stand where they found bait piles , 4 deer were shot over it, lots of tickets given. The point is it all starts with a tip.. from there if they have enough to think illegal activity is happening they can go on your property. It's not the same as entering your house as all game belongs to the state... Just a interesting point same posting says some one shot a red deer doe in franklinville weighed 175 lbs
