Sounds like some hinge cutting and falling some blocking trees could help you a lot..another thing to look at is soft edges created by tree type or density.. old maps showing fence lines long gone are also useful as game learns trail.from previous generations and will follow them seemingly haphazardly although 60 years ago a fence line or hedge row was there..

10 ft change in elevation is enough to control trails and movements, you can also steer game by falling trees and making a fence of sorts.. it's not easy work but it is effective.

The bear here hit my apple orchard and cornfields, I have seen then in my turnips as well. I would say apples are the biggest draw for me. Had one pull an apple tree over to get to them on the top of tree.. food could be a good years mast crop of beach or hickory or acorn.. if your not familiar with tree types I suggest you get a tree identification guide and use it . Not only for bear but deer and turkeys all have their favorite foods. Bear trails if used often are wider than a deers and are flat from with of paws. Leaves are not removed but are pressed into ground like rolling out pie dough. My experiance with trails are they are about exactly the same year in and year out as sightings are always on a trail or in a feed area.

I'll get a bear on a pattern of every 3 to 5 days coming to food in fall and about every 10 days to 2 weeks in summer. It sounds like you have Berry's in summer and perhaps greens in spring but are lacking a fall food source.

Recently I have had a person road hunting my neighborhood . I see the vehicle and know make model, ect but cant get close enough for plate number as he takes off when another car comes along.. I thought about trying to get plate with binoculars but road is sunken in spots and curvy. Not an easy thing to get. The occupant doenst seem that old or handicapped. I worry more about being shot by a round sent across the field than losing a deer to this guy. I have friends and family in the woods and have had rounds from road hit around me before in years past.. fortunately I have a few dec officers cell numbers and placed a call.. I hope they at least catch him with loaded gun in vehicle ... getting a deer isnt that hard and why risk getting fine ticket..perhaps if they took enough initiative as they did trying to hunt illegally and knock on a few doors they could still hunt the same area and do so legally... end of rant....

Own too much land and way to many years of work on it. 25 years of habitat work. Almost 500 deer taken off the property. Countless turkey , a few bear, not to mention grouse, crow, squirrels. Tens of thousands of trees and shrubs planted. I've seen trees I started from a nut grow and produce their own nuts. Apple trees from whips to 6in thick producing bushels of apples... to late to start over someplace else.. nephews and niece and family will hopefully enjoy the fruit of my labor for many more years...

I do drives late gun and muzzleloader with muzzleloader being the largest 5 or 6 walkers and 8 to 10 sitters. There are times to move fast and make noise and times to be quiet and stealthy.. the main rule is to stay in your stand till drive is done I dont care if you shot a world record you dont get out of stand and go look till drive is done.. the pushers shoot as many deer as the standard and sometimes more as they bounce the deer back and forth between them as they try to double back. I enjoy the drives the best. And the smaller ones in regular season can also be productive. The best advice I can say for all drives is listen to the one in charge and do what they tell you to do!

25 years of killing deer and butchering my own for 20 of them. 5 to 7 deer a year.and I have not found a tick on any..keds yes ticks no.. but the temps by me get gold at least a few days in negative degrees for day and nights. That is biggest factor I believe... though I have had friends in the area show me the ticks they have on their deer only to have to explain the difference between keds and ticks to them.

Lure for a bear in nys is pretty useless. Previous sightings and finding an active feed area are your best chances. Surprisingly bears are very patternable if you can find them. Trails are used by generations of bears even if you remove one another takes it place. We have had 3 bears in 6 years taken within 50 yards of each other off my property . Seems ever 2 years someone gets a shot and they are spotted every year. Tried anise oil, honey burns.. seems best to find an established trail and just wait. Now if baiting were legal.....

I've trapped Turkey with the dec. For a branding project. For an individual on his own all the methods you stated are illegal in nys..

It's the southern tier people like to hunt if it was around a liberal city it would be banned

I would much rather see a spike shot for meat than a nice 1.5 year old 6 ,7,8,9,10pt.

In fact more mature bucks leads to broken racks goring of rivals and in fact exhaustion many times resulting in death of said animal as competition for doe is fierce. Proper herd management is the key not focusing on bucks.. mature bucks are not needed to breed. As for length of rut.. doe population is more important.
-
Have you seen some of the deer taken this year? In non. Ar areas??? Its not needed. Great bucks are taken every year. Older deer are not easy to kill. The push for ars removes many opportunities for hunters to develop skill needed in tracking ,bullet / arrow placement. Tracking, still hunting, stand set up / location. I would not be the hunter I am with out the numerous harvest I have had of small bucks. At a point an individual may want a larger older buck but that is his own choice .no one imo has the right to ask for antler restrictions unless they have only harvested 120 in plus bucks their entire life....
-
If he shot and dropped it yes it would be his deer unless you have an agreement in your own camp.. you knew him. Makes a big difference and size of buck always seems to. Matter

This just happened opening day.. neighbors friend shoots 6pt buck ..decent 2 year old I have on camera. It crosses from their property across street into their property on my side..they track it thru my property onto next neighbors where it doubles back while going up hill( about 550 ft from creek bottom to top of hill where it runs into my friends father who double lungs it and drops its.. trackers were only 150 yards behind said buck. ... the original shot was an attemped texas heart shot bullet entered and never exited about 2in left of its bung hole.. 308 rifle.. the neighbor took some pictures congratulated my friends 70 year old father and went back down the hill to their property.. the buck covered about 1.5 miles.. was 1st shot fatal. I'm sure it would of died.. could they of tracked it without the snow that day I doubt it.. the buck was shot and killed by hunter in camp he had no idea it was wounded . The neighbors never even put up a question of who's deer it was..
-
If we were tracking a friends deer together and another tracker shot it it would still go to the person with original shot. As we would not be there tracking it if not for 1st person.. that is among my camp only..if we were tracking and it ran to another hunter not in camp and they shoot and drop it it's their deer no question. To bad a deer ruined a friendship.. this scenario played out exactly with a friends 8pt we were tracking I sent a another camp member ahead to cut it off should it jump and run.. the cut off guy dropped it .. the original shooter congratulates him on his buck and cut off man says what do you mean we are tracking your deer yours.. original shooter grew up hunting state land and couldn't believe the other guy would give it to him.. but again this is was within our camp state land would of been last guy to shoot and drop it
-
In fact it is written last person to hit and kill deer it is their deer, the custom of giving the animal with 1st lethal wound is in fact a courtesy started by bowhunters. Your friend was entitled to the buck no questions asked. It's his choice to give it to the tracker. I would do the same if it was a kid or an older hunter as I have taken many deer and it may be their 1st or last, But a dec officer would of given the deer to your buddy as well as that is the actual law.

PA Girth Chart vs Live Weight Comparison
G-Man replied to Steuben Jerry's topic in General Chit Chat
1st it's not my chart it's the pa game departments chart. The same game department that placed antler restriction on the entire state that so many here want as well.. but if their chart is faulty them.perhaps their antler restriction idea is also faulty.. perhaps the directions of pulling the tape tight need to be followed as well as how it was gutted splitting the ribs along sternum would also result in a smaller result as chest cavity would be collapsed and not natural .. if not done to the same standard when chart was created the chart will not be anywhere near as accurate. And if In fact the deer was suppose to only weigh 140 by the chart and it in fact weighs more.. would that not give you back more useable meat which is the end free result of the chart.. and it is not just Pennsylvania here is another link from whitetails unlimited https://www.whitetailsunlimited.com/media/media-resources/calculate-live-weight-of-deer.phtml/ -
Looking for some insight on Alsike clover
G-Man replied to chas0218's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I'd go with whitetail institute white clover.. I've tried many side by side and it does out draw any seed commercial or plot developed seed I tried. Proper seed bed prep is a must!! I did spray and tilled prepped and planted. I recommend spraying again after bed prep wait a week or two before seeding and spray again this killed off the seed brought to surface by bed prep..then plant.. the 1st year I did I didnt do thus and grasses weeds took over in 2 years.. after spraying 2 weeks after bed prep then wanting I was able to get 7 years out of it before grasses weed became an issue again This is also without weed hebacide being applied just mowing.. -
