PA Girth Chart vs Live Weight Comparison
G-Man replied to Steuben Jerry's topic in General Chit Chat
I use an antique hog scale for true weight its accurate to within a lbs. My personal experiences are close to chart, now if you in an agricultural area more than likely your deer will weigh more.. pa is mostly forest poor soils ,ect . Again I didnt make the chart but it does give a way to estimate weight without a scale and give you an idea what you should get back. Again depending on how it butchered and how much detail is given to the lesser cuts of meat. What you can get back will vary.. -
PA Girth Chart vs Live Weight Comparison
G-Man replied to Steuben Jerry's topic in General Chit Chat
I know many people who cut their own and do not mess with ribs, shanks, or neck. That is a lot of wasted edible meat. Add damage from a bullet, bone fragments and what you weigh maybe significantly less. Meat off the hipbone scraps left on. Bones is all edible meat lost .. -
I invite them on for Fisher studies, found bear dens, turkey trapping and banding.. its come in useful when jealous neighbor was making up. Stories of bait and no tags..when he gave them my name they laughed and said your barking up wrong tree we are on his property all the time. Look on his face was priceless they told me

They work off tips .they are simple not going to investigate every deer, if its obviously been into mineral granular feed they may..
-
Hate to say it but you can match corn to field it came from it's not hard. Varieties of apples ect.. if they found a pile of yellow delicious under a mutsu for example ..baiting.. field corn in a swwet corn field.. sunflowers in soybean.. believe me if they want the evidence can and will get you..

Lying to officer ,falsifying evidence more charges pending.
-
Problem is they were not following laws to begin with they would still hunt . Now take 10% of their pay for next 5 years and put toward habitat / law enforcement...
-
Hair and stomach material is left. That is good evidence.now if they had tip on someone baiting with corn and asked to see gut pile and there is no corn for miles and stomach is packed only with corn... see how it works?
-
Actually that is how they got a guy in ohio that killed a huge buck that frequented our rail yard. Gut pile and blood on. Railroad property, matched DNA to buck he shot ..huge fine in all the magazines..

I start by cutting around anus, poke hole at.hip and put finger along blade and cut up to sternum if not mounting blade.cuts thru cartaliage where ribs attach Poke whole through diaphragm tear out opening to chest reach up cut esophagus pull everything out and anus slides up through body cavity .1 knife no extra stuff to carry done in less than 2 min and no hair as none is cut as blade slices from inside out. I will never understand the butt up tool.. I think it's some kind of fetish toy gone wrong. . -
They are not out early season, I dont hear shots so they are not out there but they will go buy a crossbow and be out there cause they are just gun hunters.. my experiance everyone I know that has crossbow has an archery licence as well.. just my experiance. I'm sure there are those that buy and go but they are hunters with experiance as well.. as for you disabled permits people are disabled that are not quadriplegic. That is what it about takes to get a draft loc permit. Years ago I was hunting with will Elliott on a bear hunt and we were discussing crossbow.. as I told him then the only reason it's an issue at all is because of nys definition of disabled.. if it was changed there would be no need for crossbow.. it was not and crossbow gains support due to age, injury and permanent disabilities in the group of hunters increase.

The problem is if we were to have a traditional bow only season say the week of the rut. Where only traditional bow was allowed ,because the dec is not a game department the enforcement of this season is un do able.. so we may as well allow all archery equipment in all of archery season. It's the same mentality as legalizing marijuana.. cant stop it may as well regulate and make $$ off it
-
All depends area your in and what the weather is doing.. if it's cold and snowy during gun many hunters give up and muzzleloader season is all but abandoned.. mild weather and its packed..
-
Yet that attraction is still there and develops as one has success. Making it harder on yourself is a way for many sportsman to connect. And I believe many who take up a crossbow to start hunting will yearn for a challange and traditional equipment will still be made and sold and used..
-
It simply comes down to this... someone may buy one and kill my deer!! Specifically my BUCK!! Crossbow are archery equipment they use energy stored in a limb and transferred through a string to an arrow. I re remember the fight to allow compound over traditional, then finger tabs vs release, then let off over 65 for book entry.. oh dont forget the fiber optic pin debate.. all those chan gf e have allowed more bow hunters in the woods. I will state emphatically unless you are a traditional archer and have always been one you have no right to complain or try and ban crossbows.. As for the bow dissapearing.. idk my personal experiance was to make it harder on myself every year. Gone from shotgun to Using black powder pistols , compound to traditional to learning to Knapp to make my own arrow heads.. heck I'd love to try an atlatl or hand thrown spear. Every individual learns and evolves as a hunter or game manager in their own time and at their own level. Everyone that enters archery season with a crossbow is not going to stay with a crossbow forever.. some are looking to extend their archery hunt as age and physical ability have taken the compound or long bow from them.. some will be just starting and will want more of a challange as success comes over they years.. I welcome it into all of archery as I can see the big picture!!

What are your Land projects for 2019
G-Man replied to land 1's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
Regrade my logging roads, expand one plot, create a new 20 tree orchard to go with my newly found wild pear tree. Make a small wetland, tile a field, hinge cut 20 acres, create a barrier from felled trees along road for visual protection, plant evergreens in same area to further screen. Drop 5 acres of Aspen so they will root sprout and make better grouse and deer browse area... -
Stopped watching hunting shows in late 90s dont miss them.at.all.

PA Girth Chart vs Live Weight Comparison
G-Man replied to Steuben Jerry's topic in General Chit Chat
I would think edible meat would include heart and liver.. jmo though. Seems pretty close for any real purpose . They have coralated pretty close for me as well but I use a 1/4 in rope then measure that.. -
They have done them a few years ago .caught 3 people
-
My 1st bear 6 years ago off my place was shot multiple times by myself and others helping me track . A well placed shot was not possible as it was coming at me or going away from me . At 400 plus lbs it took. 5 guys to move it to where I could get to it with a tractor. They are like jello.. as for skinning or quartering if your gonna mount it the cuts are different for rug, or full or half body.. I suggest making the smallest opening to gut as is possible and full length gloves are a must.. they carry a ton of parasite.

A .243 with a factory load is not a good bear gun. I've seen one shot 5x with one and the bullet that's fine for deer never made it past the ribs ..went thru 4 in of fat and hide and exploded against ribs.. as was told to me many years ago .30 cal and up for bear.12 ga slugs are very effective and recommended by many guides as well. Yes with proper bullet and hand load and ect any gun will kill a bear..heck a whale bone with sharpened ends rolled up in. A ball a fat will kill a polar bear but do you want to track it for 3 days till it dies? Perfect shots on an unbaited bear are rare. Imo your better off with 30 cal and up as many guides told me. Even using bait. Heavy thick bones and thick hide with nearly 6 in of thick hair need to be taken into account. I am by no means an expert and people will tell you oh I killed a bear with my .223 ..perhaps 2 or 300 lbs yes but will it take a large bear.. should opportunity arise... . A little room for human error is a good thing imo. Just dont over gun where you are afraid of shooting it and pulling or flinching

Fortunately I have always been able to envision what I want to do and how.. I've made some mistakes changing an area before I knew what it was actually used for.. for example fallow fields are important they are not simply a ready made food plot..what you lose can be a lot more than what you gain..if you can find biologics farming for wildlife publication, or an old whitetail visions video called tricking whitetail bucks both are very helpful.
