  1. I would be in the woods where it is as thick as possible. If you see a deer its in range.. Which is a lot better than seeing deer out of range.. The more pressure the thicker stuff becomes a deer haven. As well as bucks keeping does close when breeding
  2. Be careful of cedars and apples as tfhey effect the Apple..usually Apple rust .. Some pines effect apples as well ..
  3. http://www.wow.com/wiki/Coyote. Sources are at end of article. Some of the oldest Fossil have been found in pa caves and West Virginia. The historic evidence is that many coyote were considered small wolves by colonists. Though wolves did control the population best ..fact is they were killed and turned in as wolves for bounty.. They were not scientifically recognised as a separate species untill late 1800s by that time they were eliminated or pushed back into wildernes Ares same as deer and turkeys.. They were here .. We have new hybrids here as well that started apearing in the 40s. .19 different subspecies are now recognised..
  4. The dec is incorrect http://www.pgc.pa.gov/Education/WildlifeNotesIndex/Pages/ECoyote.aspx I have worked on several palentological site in N.Y. and the coyote was here and disappeared several times as the game commission says.. The return in The 30s whether from remnant populations in remote areas or new influx from the West or North mixing with wolf is what dec is referring to.. Fact is they were here gone and back.. The California condor also use to call nys home by the way..
  5. I got one because i won a high end 308 that was right handed..useless to me being left handed.. Crossbows are legal so I sold it and put money in to a high end crossbow and scope.. Its something new to Hunt with and in using it I find many flaws in its handling. Compared to my bow.. But I will continue to use it .as I will buy it make any other implement They make legal.. Spear. Knife ..sling shot , blowgun.. I will try anything I can use legally
  6. An open season on them during birthing season April may would also destroy the population quickly.. Much easier as parent out looking for food to feed ever hungry pups. .. Get mom and dad or mine or the other chance of successful rearing would drop tremenously.. As for rat squirrels and rabbit fox would again fill the void.. As for Fisher they are increasing rapidly and are the critter that get to deer quickly at my property.. I've seen at least 4 different ones while hunting .. Friend got a buck today and let it lay as he shot was back a bit far.. Was a wise choice waited 6 hours and lost a bit from deer to fisher( tracks don't lie) ass was eaten from Bung hole. Tail missing and hind quarter from inside hide..lost about a 1/4 of that ham.. Deer was liver and gut shot.. Best buck he ever got.. But looks weird with out tail...lol he's still happy but 1st time I've had a deer damaged before it was found and several have been left overnight..
  7. Poison.. Deforestaion and. Trapping.. Work wonders. Of all the animals that were native to N.Y. and allowed back and then protected coyotes crazy.. Why not reintroduce elk....
  8. The coyote or brush wolf as it was known was eliminated in the early 1800s.. It was done by poison mostly.. And bounty system as well as deforestation on a very large scale. And the population could be knocked down tremendously with effort by a few ..
  9. 1st api baby grand.. Largest platform that was available 2nd loggy bayou hang on.. Long play form with cables in outside 3rd gorilla only steel stand I like.. Sadly i dont think any of them are made anymore.. Good thing I have 30 or so and just keep them up with maintanence.
  10. They were eliminated once from N.Y. and could be again...
  11. Looks olse than 2.5 can't see body well enough but in sound guess bad genes vs old deer on decline as I do not see jowels that would indicate extreme age or a deep sway back.. Would be a target animal in my camp for sure as it is mature..
  12. I find that sponges in the stomach of coyotes is very effective and wipes out whole population quickly with minimal effort or alerting them..
  13. I'd use pruners instead of saw..less scent and noise.. But do it .. I have hooked limbs with my pull up rope and pulled the. Put of the way and tied them.off for shooting lanes as well
  14. I do not like anything smaller than 30cal for deer or bear.. I assume you bow hunt and are punching thru the ribs like you do with bow.. Arrows kill by hemorage.. Bullets by shock .. Aiming point is different a high shoulder with rifle will drop them instantly do That with an arrow and you have no deer.. A soft noses or hollow point or expandable tipped bullet will help you with your choice of weapon..thin skinned game bullets. Personally I have a good chance of seeing bear and I use a 45-70. My woods are thick shots are 50 to 70 yards max.. Leaves a big hole. Flat nosed bullet and if deer does run blood trail is very evident.. Plus I like the ability to take a bear without a perfect shot.. Most of 5th guys have gone from 270.308 300 win mag to 30-30 and 45-70 as well as back to 12 ga as distances were not needed and bullets just punched thru leaving poor blood trails unless shoulder shots were made..( ruins a lot of meat..bone and blood shot threw out) .
  15. I use to hunt to prove I could do it.. then I trie dto learn everything and be the best and fill every tag I could after a few years I hunted with harder and more primitive weapons .. then I just like coming to camp and seeing friends and family.. now I like teaching what ive learned to younger or less experienced hunters ..and enjoy seeing their success... my friend say im not old enough to have reached this stage but its where I am..
  16. well said..i have a few friends that need to read your post.. to worked up about getting a big buck.. become crank miserable bastards that a candy bar wont help.. enjoyment 1st and foremost is key. Do that and everything will fall into place when it feels like work your doing something wrong.
  17. Habitat.topography. surrounding use is what tells you how big it has to be.. Secondly..atv riding (personally I hate them and don't allow them) you need more acreage to use them without destroying habitat and hunting area.. Third how many people are going to hunt and how often?
  18. I've always cut my own but .the guy I use now is so inexpensive and does such good job that 60 bucks is well spent .went to a big processor a few times when I started hunting 30 years ago and I would. I love the guy that gets a fawn and wants 10 lbs of this and 20 lbs of that and 10 lbs of this..on top of his steaks and cuts.. I watch in awe as They would take the order..no questions asked.. I knew he only had 20 or 30 lbs of meat total to begin with.. That's why I started cutting myself till recently..
  19. It was a very late born fawn it's feet were only 1 in long. Little button buck shot on dead run with muzzleloader. And yes it would not of survived.. Still good for ribbing him every year.. It was the size of a large rabbit.. And you Could of put it in a game vest easily
  20. The smallest deer ever shot at my camp would not tip a 25lbs scale.. I thought it was the heart and liver in a bag at his feet when i saw it.. Swears it was best 12lbs of meat he ever had.. Only saving grace is that he also hold record for moist points. 12...
  21. Yes I'll even Knapp some stone heads for us!

  23. Depends on cover..8 to 16 ft
  24. Not big..long legs. 200-225 Good average bear in ny
