  1. Heavy trail on public land are night travel. The brush too or pines by side of ravine are good places to start.. Deer don't shy away from steep areas many lie in the bottom of them or if They have small benches along sides they will bed there.. Because we don't like them deer love them.. It's the reason many newbie hunters take tremendous bucks going where no regular Hunter wants to or thinks to go
  2. Best. Since rifle allowed where I hunt Best with new bow..
  3. Again smokeless and modern muzzleloader.. Old. Octogon barrels were proofed by using a double charge.. That is not done anymore with modern engineering metal strength and weight are calculated..
  4. A typical drive day.. Up at 5am.. Hunters arrive by 6am maps wind direction numbers of standers and drivers needed for each drive and people volentiering for each...lot of deer killed by drivers more than standers usually.. Locations given to standers an. Hour or so given for them to get to stand sites. Another hour walk for pushers to get into position. 20 min more to let things set me down.. Drivemaster moves pushers in unison to how land needs to be pushed and pace to push at.. Shooting. Begins.. Pushers exit under standers.. Deer are then tracked or taken care of.. We get back to cabin by 1130 1200 if we are lucky.. Eat .. Nap and back out for 2nd drive of the day ..finish in the dark removing deer taken.. Its a lot of planning and coordination as Well as knowing escape routes.lay of land when to speed up and slow down.. To keep deer from doubling back as well as everyone knowing and understanding shooting lanes and requirements of standers and pushers.. A few members here have been on drives with me.. They are not easy or give me easy deer.. Any Deer taken is celebrated. Young guys are usually exhaused or will never be a driver again by the end of 1st drive..that is unroll the drivers take bigger deer and they realise it's hard work and it can yield rewards..
  5. You answered your own question.. Hunted hard.. Unless you have a sanctuary in your hunting spot where non one goes you have let the deer pattern you regardless of scent control..
  6. That's not the way to properly drive.. You were used plain and simple .. Your experience is not the way it's done..
  7. You have never been part of a drive then.. We go thru multiflora rise so thick your clothes are shredded when you get out.. Their is no stopping to get un stuck ..there is no other way to get deer to move out of it.. Blood and scars are common.. Some of our best mature bucks are taken on a drive.
  8. If a drive is done properly deer are not flying by. They are in fact only suposed to be moving at a quick walk at best. There is a lot of planning and skill in doing a good drive.. I have done them with up to 21 people and they are very sucessful. Rules especially safety rules are to be strictly adheared to. Our biggest one is if you are in a stand you stay in the stand till drive is done even if you just shot a world record!!!
  9. Remington use smokless powder.. A double charge is 100x worse than a double charge in a regular muzzleloader. Most regular muzzleloader barrells are tested with 2x the max powder charge before the are used..
  10. 2nd annual banquet 9085 Route 240 West Valley, New York 14171
  11. Elk are grazers and the area of the southern tier was looked at by Rocky mountain elk foundation years ago. The effect on farmers and multiple land owners would be expensive in damages caused. I don't see it happening with out a true game department ..to much political bs in nys
  12. It's a scam.. Camo looks good to us. Many deer have fallen to red and black plaid jackets and pants.. Think about it deer are brown and white and hard to see.. Why..movement slow deliberate movement.. Although breaking up your outline is important most modern camo is too complex and dark at anything over 10 yards.. There are a few open patterns that are designed for distance. Best bet is military digital camo or an asat. Pattern . or leafy cut clothes.. A ghillie suit .. Designed to break up outline. Not look like a whole Damn forest .. In the North East our predominant trees are maple beach and hickory these are light barked grey trees .. Is your camp grey? No it usually brown black green and mossy.... Fine if you hunt pines or southern live oak. Ridges....
  13. Was only 24hrs for mine.. Or they will call and ask where it is butcher or taxidermist and collect from there
  14. I don't do any scents or scent control for bow and I do not do or use any for gun. Much lazier in gun than bow in that I don't go as far or as often.. Could really care less about gun season.. Just waiting. For late season i guess
  15. 30 min before and after sunrise sunset is the common time for all game in my except deer.. You have to see a beard on a turkey or what kind of duck your shooting at those times..i sure as heck can identify a deer.. Both of these are sorry excuses of hunters period. The best thing of bow hunting is learning how to get close..unfortunately tv shows seem to push the long range shooting .. I never consider long range shoot as anything more than target practice. 99% of the time the game doesn't even know it's being hunted... Just my opinion but I'm more impressed with the Hunter that stalks or takes game at close range.than a guy shooting a monster across a field..
  16. Jumped deer thru gut.. 50 yards from impact..deer got up when he got down to look at blood.. Its dead.. Should of followed trails from bed.. It would also head down hill or to water.. Poor decision to look. When he didn't know where he hit it....
  17. Forever wild areas.. Let them burn.. More effective than logging and put the nutrients back into the ground. Hundreds of fire towers manned for generations destroyed what the Adirondacks should be.. We are taught for is bad.. For wildlife. Fire is the best thing like the mythical phoenix the best arise from the ash.. That being said.. You need to track to kill a deer in big woods consistently. Large beaver ponds that are drained is next best.. Woodsmanship is number 1 thing needed .. Everything else is secondary.
  18. Was good season took a great buck after missing one the week before. Took a doe early which is always a goal.. Sat a few days for bear and saw another great buck. One of the better bow seasons although I hunted less time than I normally do.
  19. Let a few fires burn it.. Clear cut areas.. Habitat Diversity is the key ..
  20. Almost every Hunter has started with a doe or small buck.. Every kill builds experience and confidence.. I was allowed to take what was legal and what i was happy with.. I believe in qdm but I will not pressure anyone into it or Shane someone for what they shot.. I was there once my self.. As we age and experience builds we all change what we want or enjoy.. Life and time move in one direction enjoy it!
  21. Here is biggest issue. Out seasons are not run by biologists it is run by politicial votes.. Stop complaining about Dec not doing it's job it's an environmental organization that was also give task of enforcing game laws!!!! .. Demand a constutional amendment for the right to hunt and fish to be goverend by game department!! Only then will nys be able to effectively manage herd and herd health. Until that is done you are not comparing Apple's to Apple's..plain and simple.
  22. And they only have 100 I hunters..they need to take as many as possible na sits not a Midwest trophy state that everone keeps comparing us to
  23. The biggest thing people miss is other states that do not have a long gun season do not have gun during the rut.. Far to many bucks are taken.. N.Y. is only state the gun season falls in the rut(at least the tail end) . No other animal is hunted with gun during the breeding season.. April is prime breeding for turkey here not may..its why you have birds gobbling their heads off just before season. So shortning the season would only really help if it is not during the rut.
  24. They are black when in estrous and are kicked clean soon after breeding. Buck will turn black as well and can be black am the way to their hooves if they are a dominant breeder.. They do make excellent attractants if gathered 3 miles or more from where you will hunt as deer will come to see who the new deer is.
  25. High grading doesn't take many years a few years of 4 a side hunting in high Hunter density areas will do it pretty fast. You have to remember there are 550k hunters with a buck tag in my and only 113k antlered bucks are taken.. That is a lot of hunters per square mile
