  1. After 1st year my turnips are now eaten in october.. damn things don't read when they Re suppose to eat them
  2. My friend does.. I'll ask him .he's to old to use a computer he says.. but loves hunting...
  3. Them old had ones are easy to convert to power for less than 50 bucks.. a couple of pulleys or gears and electric motor and your in good shape mounted it to a 2x12 x2ft and just c clamp it to work bench and plug in.. it's about 50 years old now.. like to see a new grinder stand up to that.. if motor goes new ones are easy replacement
  4. I'm with you biz.. I don't get it.. more junk not needed.. I still have a tv I get up and turn the knob to change channels on
  5. Good heat tape wrapped insulation a boxbuilt around it and closed up skirting on trailer. Seemed to work well except 1x power went out...
  6. Seems like some off season conversations and I hate to say it..buddy up to the guy and show him some things.he definitely needs it.. it's not your land that's the best your going to be able to do..family almost always wins out..Seems his skill level is fawn master... you are gonna have a long time with him at that level messing you up or you can be proactive and try and help the guy. And maybe he will learn to respect where your hunting as well and strive to become a better hunter.. I had to do this with a friends brother.long story but had a out with his dad and we took him in at camp.5 years later but he's taking adult deer now and discusses where he wants to hunt or where we are hunting the night before.. slow learner but is great help clearing trails and trimming shooting lanes..
  7. If they were smaller and in reach of grouse.under 20ft but these are skinny tall trees I'd much rather have the cherry oak and chestnut growing.as well as aspen shoots.(buds and catkins are favored by grouse) most of what was left is hickory and I just don't need that much as I need diversity . And thermal cover.
  8. Ask. It's pretty simple.. Ask for late season..or specific dates. Ask if you can bring your kid or a friend. Ask where to park . Ask!! Most people just want to know who is on opp pretty and where
  9. I've always used a hip quiver and fanny pack.. never in the way less to rattle and easy access for second shot. I've killed several deer walking and a single arrow on the string with 6 more on the hip. Also give me ability to switch to a turkey or small game head quickly. It hangs in tree nice by quiver or belt. And nothing on bow to work loose or rattle
  10. Actually the conservationist always profiles an area every issue.. use to read old.issues(back to the 60s ) in the library in college.. my currebt property location actually was written up.as a great place for game innthe 60s.. seems to hold true today.. at least i have no complaints
  11. Well the deer at tift farm are taking a clobbering this year.. 12 doe (antlerless) and 2 buck in last 3 weeks in 4 miles of railroad track.. many more close calls.. sad to see..well hear them clang off the plow on the locomotive.. they really should have permit bow/crossbow for deer there..seems an awful waste.. I'm sue there are more dead on ns track and bp track as well.. so far it seems the white bucks have made it...

    Scale

I use a early 1900's hog scale.. damn thing is still accurate to a lbs.
  13. Chestnuts grow very fast a 10 year old tree produces bushels of nuts.. 3 or 4 year old will make a quart.. the larger the crown the more nuts.. but you need to fence off them as deer will browse them to the ground. You have to remember 1 of every 4 trees on the east coast was a chestnut.ti the bought got them.. they are a very valuable resource.
  14. My dunstans were 4 to 5 ft whips..Never watered except.at.planting.. they produce in 2 or 3 years(few nuts) they were considered 3 year olds.. I may have a few nuts I can mail you if they frost crack and germ.. ill know in 3 months. I have american ,chineese. And dunstans.. crosses of each.

    Misfires

I've always used loose powder . Never had a powder problem just caps on sidelocks. Inlines no problem.. cap on sidelock issue, when walking and snow dropping all over it
  16. Well in reality you just hurt the animals you wanted to help.. unless They are use to eating pumpkin and Apple's they will fill their bellies and starve as they don't have bacteria to digest them.. and while you were gone the neighborhood trespassers shot it off your baitpile and you'll never know about it...
  17. Meat hunting is simple ..bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush... pi k the biggest in front of you and shoot.. some people have limited time and access. They pay perhaps 200 between licence and travel evpenses to deer hunt and they are going to get something...
  18. My one neighbor has .6 of an acre but the deer lie right in her yard.. we joke if she'd let us put out guns over the hood of her car and take a shot.. they lie there all day and dont move till after legal shooting light. They don't need much to make it thru huntinh season.
  19. Why all this talk of 1 buck rule..only Ohio and Kentucky (looking at bug buck states allow 1 buck.. all the others are 1 buck in bow one in gun.. they have big bucks in iowa.amd Wisconsin.. both allow 1 in now and gun. Missouri one each.. seems everyone compares to ohio.. and the residents there don't like it very much.. go to one buck and everyone's wives and kids will be getting tags.. Mandatory deer checks in all the other states..oh they have right to hunt and fish and game.departments as well... not an environmental department that hunting is a secondary focus of...
  20. Junk as in 0 value in timber or for game animals. I have some that were 12 in in dia. The guy cutting firewood loved them. Very indicative of compressed compacted soils. Much rather see the oak and maple amd cherry grow. It's a slow process .. attended many Dec workshops.. but it is rewarding seeing the woods regenerate very diversified vs the near monoculture created by hi-grading the timber for decades ..
  21. 20 acres is all I can do in a winter I have 274.. most is in good shape as I have been having logging done fairly regularly.. this piece was cut in 99 and is now large pole. Many junk trees to cut ..mostly hornbeam and hickory.. my land was all sheep farm in early 1900s soil is very compacted..but 20 years of work and it produces double digit deer take every year.
  22. Poplar is great cut it low so it suckers.. when They get 20ft tall cut again .. main food for grouse and deer.. instead of removing the elm try hingcutting them to thicken up areas and create bedding for buck( they love to bed under them especially if you can fall 3 or 4 onto each other. To hold the buck you need the thick cover.. other great tree to hinge are red maples as they will provide food as well as cover. To get the deer to use your woods plot. Feather the edge reducing the hight of the timber and creating a ticket around it.. piling brush and tops on the down wind side will force deer to enter it from either end allowing for a better wind so you can set stand effectively.. Best of luck.. I have a large hinge cutting project this winter as well to thucken back up 20 acres I can see 100 yards in.. I prefer seeing no more than 50 yards with 30 or 40 being even better.
  23. Wondering what your or your camps success rate was.. many more licences are sold than buck taken or even deer taken. My camp broken down. Hunters had to hunt at least 5 days during each season except late.. Bow had 6 hunters 3 buck and 2 doe taken by 3 hunters 3 got nothing Gun had 7 hunters 4 buck 3 doe taken by 6 hunters 1 got nothing Muzzleloader 4 hunters 0 deer.(everyone that hunter has deer in freezer and were only looking for mature buck) 2 days hunter. Everyone at camp got at least 1 deer there. Several took deer in other dmu as well . Overall it was a good year though harvest were spread out over the entire seasons .
  24. My personal experience with practicing qdm or as I like to call it ( Tdm) total deer management. I have no restriction on guys at camp I simple show via cam photos deer that are available. I personally target top 3 to 5 buck I have on cam.. most guys do the same. Although we pass up many many buck the true giants on cam elude us most years. Once a deer makes it to 2.5 and survives to 3.5 or 4.5 they are master's of hiding. They are not behind every tree as they do not put up with each other. If I can hold 1 or 2 140 in or more buck on my 274 acres I'm extremely lucky.. many of " my buck" show up on neighbors cameras 2 or 3 miles away.. but are not shot.. ar's will do nothing for improving how we hunt..we are patterned so quickly that a sighting of a target animal is the highlight of the season many times.. I truly believe there is a big buck in everyone's area and only a top skilled woodsman / hunter wil lbe able to consitantly harvest one if they can get access to the property to hunt the target animal properly. In my opinion habitat is a much bigger factor in consistently holding big deer than ar's. The thick nasty stuff is where they hide and let you walk by at mere yards as they hide as well as secure feeding areas.. they grow old and die rarely glimpsed by a hunter. Yet they may appear on camera or sheds may be found to prove they exist or existed
  25. What if my fiance starts, hunting at 35? Or i get a friend into it at 50.. it may take them 6 or 7 years just to see a deer to shoot... nope no mandatory ars
