  1. .223 .243???seriously???? You apparently forgot that bear inhabit nys!!!!... .270, 30.- 30,,.308 or 30-06. With 30-06 having most range in bullet weights and loads especially if hand loading. As for best firearm ..def a combo shotgun. Or 20, 12ga my personal pref is the 12.
  2. actually i've seen the opposite effect in ohio, mass sale of crossbows after 2 years of legalization... you still need to get close to game..seems some people just think they are like guns, after a year or two of fustration lots of good x-bows were for sale. the weapon does not a hunter make......
  3. seems cattaragus county is all aboard. https://attachment.fbsbx.com/file_download.php?. =264907240336557&eid=ASsQMdODgztv8LVFlvFPdkJFGH85PQBa18W3ACRM0PZD4TQt6q7H8s4-9cXiv6q8P60&ext=1392401690&hash=AStwLT0QQOPhaQwk
  4. Been out strutting in cut cornfields along the railroad tracks from dunkirk to ashtabula ohio.. soon they will be waking me up by gobbling outside my window....ugh
  5. nice! the bees would be there now if they survived the winter..seems like you found a hive that died.. we use to use cheese cloth to seperate honey from the comb, save the wax nothin better for your bow strings..
  6. very nice..if i were to get ont thats the one i want, excelenty balanced crossbow.!
  7. join the nwtf it has a good magazine
  8. I would of liked to of seen this, we had an elephant die at buffalo zoo some years ago and i remeber butchering it with stone knives to further reserch at a paleonological site near batavia. meat was fed to lions and other cats as well. Euthenazing surplus animal is common (think dogs and cats) to make it public is not a big deal. The people against this should open their eyes to real life!!

    Huge spike

This is where true qdma practices would of removed this deer as a mature animal via age accessment, where the AR's would continue to let it live... age and judging age is a good way to manage a herd, ar's are for the uneducated masses who believe saving points makes bigger bucks.... Its like high grading a forest for years , yes you will have trees but the value wil be lowest by removing all the good genetic(large straight trees) the junk wll get big but the forest will be unhealthy and of low quality.

    Huge spike

Looks like a possible problem of high hunter populations combined with ar's.....
  11. i'd like to see a spring bear season. bait in high population areas. and allegany st park open for bear.
  12. Doc , the fact is you live in the country as i do now and when i was a kid before development. laws are broke all the time but to simply say 150 is to close to legally shoot is like saying, no one should have a gun they are unsafe!! iIm sure this was looked into and deemed an appropraite distance to discharge a bow. you may have different view on what your are comfortable with but as many have said here this is broken numerous time by target archers with no incident, thus negating the its not safe issue.. as for working it into management plan . it lets homeowners in large private estates 3-10 acres remove deer from their properties legally when the 500' rule doesnt. especially with numerous anti hunting land owners mixed into these developments (recovery of said game is a different issue) .
  13. I've seen more target archery in the subburbs around buffalo, cheektowaga, lancaser, depew, westseneca. that have dischargelaws and are obviously in violation of 500' regardless. ...for the doom and gloom people that envision shooting out windows, people in yards getting shot,ect...it hasnt happened ,unless its by some kids f-ing around shooting cats n dogs... the set back for archery that is proposed isnt a big deal. let alone for the guy that has a camp next to a non hunter(more and mor eare buying recreational land) and want to target shoot next to his/her cabin. 500' is 166yards. 150 is 50 yards... 90% of all shots on deer are under 50 yards. I would guess 50% or more of good legal hunters violate the 500' rule on multiple ocasions in their life unknowingly in most circumstances. For example: we use to shoot off our deck in lancaster, they built a house across the street, we continued to shoot off our back deck in the opposite direction of the street on land we owned.but if a tape was pulled out the house across the 50' street sat 60' off the road and our house sat back 40' from road and was 36'deep.. guess what we were under 200' from that home and i was in violation of a 500' rule... 50 'maybe a tad short but it is much better than 500' now figure that at camps, all occupied building sitting 10' off line (barn for example) your property is completly off limits with a 500' rule... unless it is 1000 plus ft wide, 500 ft is way to long especially when you think of all the long narrow (under 800' wide properties and camps)
  14. I guess the only people that should be upset are the traditional archers, they fought against compound bows for years... they were approved..fingers only ..then releases were legalised then 50% then 60% and now 80-90% letoff is allowed. This is just another loss for them. as for the compound archers you stand upon them victorious for what? how many of you hunt traditionally, or would give up the rut for them to have their own season? Get over it ...... Crossbows are coming sooner or later, same as compounds arrived. Why say we're winning? it only take 1 loss to turn the tide(think the south losing at gettysburg) they arent going away so why not welcome them with open arms?
  15. first and formost, it is a hunters desire to kill a large mature buck, same as catching the biggest fish. It only effects the age structure of a herd to let young ones walk, as for shortng and more intense rut, seems to benifit the hunter not the deer, yearling and buttons can and do breed. and bucks do not run themselfs to death, they are infact more succeptible to injury when the buck to doe ratio is closer to 1 to 1 as they now must fight for every doe they breed, resulting in broken horns , puncture wounds, possible loss of eyes. causing much more chance to die in a bad winter. The state needs to manage numbers not age. AS for it working in iowa, kansas,illnois,ect... check the hunter numbers per acre there! you want bigger older deer , just eliminate 400,000 of our 650,000 hunter in nys..perhaps a lottery? then more deer survive and get older... for what i pay in taxes on my recreational property i should be paid for providing a place for the deer to live/feed. perhaps 1 hunter per 50 acres is the optimal number to let deer live.
  16. I've heard of this before.. deer starving with full stomachs...same can happen even if feeding alfalfa hay, the bacteria isnt there to digest it.
  17. nice, too much snow here right now 8in ..and more expected...
  18. that is why ben franklin didnt want the bald eagle as the symbol of our country, he prefered a falcon, but made a statment in protest of the eagle that has been misconstrued to this day. paraphrased" if your going to pick a scavenger as the eagle , i would rather have a wild turkey as the national symbol as it is a devoted parent to its young." and people thought he thus wanted the turkey.....sarcasm lost on as many back then as it is today...?
  19. most schools are liberal,,, lucky the school here has a teacher that takes his top students hunting around the world. has fundraisers for it and the school even has its own hunting show
  20. For what i pay in property taxes , i dont think i should pay at all unless i hunt stateland/public waters. i'll still follow seasons and bag limits..
  21. worse gave ever, lamest comercials ever... (radioshack was funny, and hero welcome by bud was nice) everything else put un you tube well before...like knowing what you got for christmas a month before... at least the championship games were good.
  22. 1 Known fact...all politicians are in it for something, your best interests are not the.reason......
  23. I don't think besides recovery, this is an issue. With surburban sprall reaching further out and the increase in anti hunters , i see it as a viable option for hunters to remove deer in a surburban location with estate type lots 3- 10 acres. This is the area of largest growing deer population. without this option you are left with innefective contraception ideas, or bait and shoot. (which i see being legalised following the implimentation of this set back rule). they most likly will allow baiting in these area as well to help eliminate the recovery problem.
  24. Any tree you plant in an opening should be fenced or put in a tube, deer will rub on them even if they didn't eat them to nubs. This is just my experiance damn deer ar ethe passion and the enemy. love and hate them the same time.
