  1. i filled up 2 weeks ago and they came in 3 days same price.. i think its an excuse to wring some more cash out of people in the cold weather snap we are having. the crude oil we are transporting via train contains higher amounts of natual gas and propane than most... so where is it going? just as gas prices went up the natual gas industries want a piece of the pie. Its all just greed.. same as in so many issues around.
  2. dragging tops out does more damage to the woods even if it clearcut, as for money 2-3 bucks a top. they are best left in place to return nutirents to the soil (free fertalizer) and provide seeding from browsing damage.as well as cover for game(rabbits, grouse, turkey, bear) as for growing up to thick to walk thru..i've never seen a deer not be able to go thru brush.. multiflora rose stops me in my tracks but deer nope.... a nice sanctuary for deer to grow up and old in... think of it as trophy management...without mandatory ar's
  3. chestnuts and filberts(hazelnuts) grow well though its tough to keep squirrels off the fillberts, and my newest problem is keeping bears out of the chestnut..(havent had much luck with anything i tried) as for apples/pears look for varieties that blossom and drop fruit at various times, that way if you get a frost some will possible stll bear fruit, and likewise in fall fruit dropping at different times keeps the draw longer than a smorgasborg all dropping at once.
  4. well the money is spent on road maintance, culvert upgrades, ect. i know in hanging bog they are 10 years behind in their cutting schedule due to there only being 2 state foresters in the region. as for the tops they are left as protection for new seedlings more than habitat. As for marking trees, they only mark trees to save as the rest are removed to a diameter of 4 inches breast high. the new growth is thick and deer and game will move into it for nesting bedding/feeding. as for tough hunting..thats why its called hunting! not shooting. if it keeps the lazy hunter from walking through it ..and your willing more game for you! the dec had land owner workshops for minimal cost(usually price of lunch and snacks) and part of the tour is showing various stages for clearcutting, new,5 year,10year,20 year, ect the most common question when a new cut is shown is what and why are you leaving all the tops?? If you ever get a chance to attend a workshop i highly recommend it!
  5. larger piece doesnt mean better, nor more stand sites. get 1 or two good spots scouted on the piece you already posted here and find easy and hidden access routes in and out, then hunt it when conditions are just right for it ,then do the same on the large piece finding maybe a few alternate wind direction stands from first piece. this will allow you to minimize pressure and keep hunting any day you can without over pressuring a piece or a stand location. its like staying on a diet. hard to do but worth it in the end.
  6. All depends if its a private or public seasonal road, if its private plow away if its public your liable for any damage done...fyi
  7. my neighbor hunts in a blue ski jacket and blue jeans... maybe i should inform him hes not dressed the part.... though he'd prolly kick my ass at 76. clothes dont make the hunter nor do they make a photo... stop believing the media get out and have fun!! congrats to this hunter seems he put the time in.
  8. I have a stand almost on a property line with a neighbor its completely on my property but few feet from the line was built years before he bought the land, he hates it, i have offered it to him to hunt as well he never does, i still hunt it and the deer are visable for quite a distance from his property they always cross under the stand and on to mine. i hunt it as i always have and will continue to do so, he put up a stand 60 yards on his property to cut the deer off as they come on to mine but gets upset when he sees me and thinks my presence will keep the deer away, he has put coyote urine around my stand(as seen on cameras) and will shoot just to shoot the deer dont care they will still move thru as it is a funnel. the deer still come onto mine and i dont worry if he shoots my way as i am up in a tree. i dont shoot onto his although there are plenty of opportunities to do so. the deer will pop out at 10-20 yards and give me a nice close shot. it up to you what you do grow, but trails can be hunted a little bit away and if your shooting down its not a problem, i have stands 50 yards from each other and guys in each(its to thick for 1 stand to cover. or make a nice brush fence and make the deer cross where you want them to closer to a spot he cant see from his stand and yours can.
  9. I'm left handed and had same problem rest is the key, finally after 2 days in sling after 5 months it was 90% better and I got good at right handed 1 finger typing!! learn to use your left hand, I had to use my right being left handed, 2 days of rest will do wonders.... might come in useful if deer/turkey come in opposite side and you have to shoot opposite handed...
  10. Not a bad winter here at all, deer have barely touched the standing corn, so much food still on the ground, I expect a good horn year next year as they have more than enough food no snow, and warm spells, all the energy they can put into horn has me excited , we had a bad year last year and deer were putting weight back on rather than horns... I believe deer can go for an extended period of time, they have the ability to browse, the turkey onn the other hand take a walloping from unbreakable ice and heavy snow.
  11. Lots of fox and coyote eating up them tasty phesants at DL...
  12. You can plant in active pasture but better have fencing up around them and staked well, cows will try and rub against the tree/and or stakes . you can do it and its a lot more work than most people would want to deal with.
  13. captain blood, secondhand lions, gettysburg extended edition
  14. my blizzard conditions. guess im too far south and inland...but cant get to railyard as i would have to drive thru 6 towns with driving bans....
  15. You need to look at a lot of deer and know the characteristics of your specfic area , a 3.5 year old from ag county is much different from one in big woods, or mountain areas.. thus the many guesses on age imo...
  16. elma, east aurora, and south wales were getting pounded earlier on my drive home from work... this is a lake effect band blizzard... i have nothing at my house (too far south and inland from the lake)
  17. 7 down 30 more to go..always check cables even coated theycan rust and you dont see them , much safe to do when 2ft off the ground than15-20 ft up in a tree.. straps, seats, and ssqueeks can allbe repaired on off season, as well as adjusting stand locations by a few feet or yards every year... leave up up and the deer move out of range or accident can and will happen.
  18. the age of the hunters is increasing as it the push for ar's.. is it because of their age that they want the ar's or is it the new hunters jaded by tv entertainment expecting all deer to be once in a lifetime kills? I'd like to see a chart of ar's by age and experiance hunting. would it help in hunter recruitment or hurt? just a thought.....
  19. Big thing is clear the grass from base of trees by hand especially before fall!, or mice / voles will build nest and girdle them. Tree tubes are nice but wasps like to build nests in them if you have bears this is big problem because they will tear them down to get at larvae and the tree as well, let alone cattapillers that eat leaves use them as cover from birds. if your planting bigger trees 3/4 to 1in plus diameter trunks I would use 2x3 or 2x4 welded fence 5ft tall. Cut and placed in a hoop 2ft in diameter and staked upright. Any shorter deer will eat tops of your trees ,must be welded as they will push against it to eat limbs. As where to get your trees a good local nursery will have hardy varieties there. For more info for late dropping look at the arbor association. You also want to find variants with small apples( market apples are bred for size, but a deer can't get a big apple in its mouth !! They have to step and crush them...they go for easiest food. Macoon, Winesap, juice type apples are usually smaller.compared to wolf river for exampl (5lb apples are possible) what would you try and eat and run If you were a deer?.
  20. around 146, grossing low150's not sure what score you go by its definatley a mature buck, having no reference of body and charateristics for your area, my guess if it was on my property would be 4 plus....
  21. same can be done with what do you expect to come with a fish fry.....
  22. I was turkey hunting in the fall in Delhi and came across a dead turkey about 6ft up in a tree wedged in a fork of a limb with it wings pinned back...must of tried to fly down and got wedged and died.. scariest thing was tracking a wounded bear in 2012 i shot. I can't go near the brush pile I was standing on top of with him looking up under me I can still see his eye looking at me thru the top....i still avoid that area completely.
  23. Had a good sat ,11 guys in camp, 18 shots fired, ended up . with two buck and three doe. That was it no one hunted sun Mon or Tuesday. Was an average year overall in total deer seen and killed.
  24. I just use some 2 ft wide fabric and some sticks...I run n gun more often than not and it sets up fast and let's my nephew frdget with feeling trapped in a tent....
