lime needs soil to particle contact. putting it down now most will wash away... you need to be able to work it in...

What if you shot it and didn't notice its tags, report it and find out it escaped 3 years prior..is it mountable..is it still a farm buck? At what point do escaped farm raised wild animals become wild? 3-4 years is a pretty mature deer in the wild... Its not like it's an escaped cow that is definatly domesticated... B and c have classes for corsican rams, and other exotics killed on non high fenced ranches aren't they domestic escapee's as well....

Contact your local soil and water conservation district ..yes their in the phone book. they should have seedlings and shrubs for sale or at least give you and idea of what will grow best in the area. The state nursery in saratoga is another good source for seedlings and information. You can see what they recommend and order larger trees from a local or similar zoned nursery if you want faster growth.

What is the reason for owning a firearm that holds more then 5 rounds?.
G-Man replied to Gthphtm's topic in General Chit Chat
Why have a gun that shoots more than 1 round then 1 shot 1 kill..right? Because you can! Old winchester model 12's carry 6 or 7. Go grouse hunting ever have one fly perfectly strait after your gun is empty? sometimes an extra shot is what you need for protection or in hunting!! -
Poplar trees as a food source?
G-Man replied to Fantail's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
These are tulip poplar. also know as green wood, made into poplar trim, not what most people think as poplar that would be aspen large tooth, quaking, and small tooth. yes deer eat the leaves. Is a fast growing timber tree and also one of our tallest and straightest in nys(if your lucky enough to have them). As a food source i believe they would be negligiable white oak , pear, apple will out produce them everytime. In the big woods in a bad mast crop year maybe. Personally my undergrowth would be browsed before these i believe. the woods he's in i can see a mile in...mine 70 yards tops, 50 in most places if your lucky. -
Bang! the story said this deer traveld several miles from where it escaped. what if the tags were ripped from its ears running through brush? no report of escaped livestock? what about farm raised phesants no one has a problem shooting them or banded turkeys or pheasants? i would of contacted the owner if some id was present on the ear tags. i've seen ear taged bears..are they livestock? unless i was a neighbor of a deer farm and knew the deer i believe i would shoot everytime.

I use to do my own.. then i went to an accountant a friend recomended. i got back a lot more with him and actually had him redo past taxes and got back more than i already recieved. well worth the $ . lots of loop hole deductions that they know of that change every year.. doing it yourself its nearly impossible to keep up with the changes

Never heard of it but im in south western ny. i'll look at the site

Take it if you think you might get 1st rights to the rest of the land. 5 acres in not a big piece maybe 1 hunter,2 if very thick and bow hunting.a lot depends on the shape of the property.. square , rectangular, long and thin, ect . As for seetting up a range.the more human intrusion the less sign you will see from game especially on 5 acres. at worst land is always a good investment as it never seems to go down in price

Has Anyone Seen These Slugs Before? They Look Down Right Nasty!
G-Man replied to 13BVET's topic in General Chit Chat
the original active slugs were cheap as were lightfield then they caught on and price more than tripled.... maybe a repeat here?? -
you mean a hydroaxe? try your local bobcat dealer, don't know who is there. but buffalo is bobcat of buffalo.

oct 1 is in from what this says,,,,

yeah by late season you should be near some really thick stuff and brush in the blind!! glad you still got the bug!!!

A field cultivator and a drag for the tractor or atv will work. A hand spreader will work fine for that size fields a walk behind till will leave you with numb arms and body for a few days but if its all you have....
-
Clearing trees/brush can be done now. The next time you could really do something would be late spring and that would be frost seeding/over seeding fields.

Why not be the safest you can be and wear orange? yes you don't have to but you don't need a saftybelt either till the time you fall.... and yes i''ve seen guys on drives crawling thru brush in full camo... just seems like the ones that get shot are in camo and not orange.... Its like not wearing a seatbelt and getting away with it cause your a good driver. yes you may pay attention to detail be a great hunter but does everyone else out there have the same skills knowledge as you?? I'll say no and protect myself weather i am on my own property or not there are person whomwill and do tresspass or hunt from the road... I for one don't want to end up a stastic!!

The hinge cut will not kill the trees and they will send up suckers in the spring off the stump and trunk. the purose is to place buds / new growth within a deers reach. Yes you can replant trees but remember you just created a feeding area so you need to protect your seedlings by planting inside the tops or using some kind of tree protector!.. Good trees to hinge cut are red maple, ash, oak are good but only if you have them in excess as the sprout readily from stumps.

Well as for the deer sightings going down everyyear... My question is what had been done to the property? Woods mature , brush grows up!! farms close shop or roatate into different crops. We consistantly average 15-18 deer a year since 93, usually 10 doe. but the land is always being manged. As hunters we fall into a groove of going to the same stand year in and year out or the same area.. Habitat changes some times so slowly as it isn't noticed by a few yearly visits..but take a picture now and look at agin in 10 years...deer will move to better cover and habitat resulting in fewer sightings even if a food source is added it cover isnt there they will feed at night!.. my area... i'll give a b... average hunting 9w.

I'm all for 2 weekends of muzzloader in the sz. I not sure how the state could accomplish this. i Personally would like to see at least a week if not 2 of no hunting between all seasons 4 weeks bow 2 week break 3-4 weeks gun 2 week break and 2 weeks of muzzloader possibly over the holidays so students returning from college could participate.

Doc, i did like the subsidy parody of having more older buck to increase ones chances of harvesting a trophy...got a good chuckle out of that. It seems where few or no dmp are issued and ar's are or will be going in effect they are near high human population areas or remote wilderness. If left unregulated there maybe just seeing a track would make the paper.... As for the majority of the state would ar's even be and issue if not pasted in every magazine and tv hunting show????? If forced into having to make that choice i guess i'd go with ar's but i'd be really unhappy with having any more regs shoved at me....

It doesn't matter what you try to manage yourself the hunter population is very high in new york as compared to size of hunting properties. If 100 doe tags are to be issued for a certain area you don't need to shoot 100 doe the dec looks at reports and figures sucess rates... unfortunatley if you live/hunt in an area they the hunters are proficent the take may adversly affect the population resulting in less older deer / doe,and buck . Doe have a much smaller home range than buck and if you get doe tags every year and fill them by targeting the largest oldest doe your doe age structure will decrease. although down the street the doe age structure may be much older..... Remember wmu are large do you really expect the dec to be able to effectivley manage for age in that size area? You need to learn to control your own area and population working within the dec regulations. I know my property needs to have 10 doe a year taken off it to maintain good regrowth in my woods. when i reach that number we stop shooting doe! even though we posess enough tags to effectivly double that number!!
