  1. i assumed a nice buck i was after was killed or died of old age 4 years later.. ended up getting him at age 8 1/2 thats why i laugh when everone thinks if you pass young ones the big ones will be just waiting for you.. the older a deer gets the better it becomes at evading and avoiding hunters. they dont remain dumb if they make it through 1 or 2 seasons
  2. i think the bears are a worse problem than the yotes at least in my area.... i will be dropping a bear this year if its the last thing i do..... >
  3. two thumbs up!! as the saying goes!!!! lol ;D
  4. here is the law http://public.leginfo.state.ny.us/LAWSSEAF.cgi?QUERYTYPE=LAWS+&QUERYDATA=$$STF83$$@TXSTF083+&LIST=SEA19+&BROWSER=EXPLORER+&TOKEN=40665045+&TARGET=VIEW These moneys, after appropriation by the legislature, and within the amounts set forth and for the several purposes specified, shall be available to the department of environmental conservation for the care, management, protection and enlargement of the fish, game and shell fish resources of the state and for the promotion of public fishing and shooting. All of such moneys, revenues and interest shall be available to the department of environmental conservation, pursuant to appropriation, exclusively for outdoor recreation, trail maintenance, and the development and improvement of public access to outdoor recreation and trails. still lots of loopholes...
  5. i have a leupold rx II , love the angle compensation as i hunt on about A 40% SLOPE rangeing the trees around works if they are growing strait..., don't buy one thats good for extreem ranges if you plan in usuing it for bow. mine is good to 250 yards but the ones that range farther cost more and do you really need to know a deer is 500yrds away with a bow in your hand? i also like the 2x maginificatiion as i can use it in place of a binocular while looking for a hidden piece of a deer.
  6. it would work, but check with dec. used in the way you described it would be a scent/ attractant. same as putting apple cider in a atomizer(spary gun) and spraying it into the air...
  7. bear will probably be close to 250-275 come fall... nice to see a bobcat on film
  8. exactly..thats the problem i have with most fees for hunting guarentee that it will go where it is supose to!! now the state might lose federal roberson pittman dollars because they have a loophole that let them put money elsewhere??? hmmm... i think we could have a lot more dec officers if the money just went to them instead of enviromental cleanups.. not that i against cleaning up but a seperate game commision would be they way to go!!
  9. they pick the undigested seed from it and yes its a good draw in late winter, fall they usually find enought to eat in the woods and fields
  10. depends what day corn you planted.. i ususally figure 4 months for it to dry(blacktip) and dent for fieldcorn. deer prefer it dry as moist corn can carry a lot of deadly fungus which they know to avoid, i ve seen deer walk by wet corn and head a 1/2 mile or more to a good dried down field. i have 2 good fields of corn and 1 thats looks bad(was to dry for to long)will have ears but will only be small as its barly 3 ft high and tasseling. 86- 97 day is about average for growing but i can get killing frosts where i am in sept..
  11. i had one hen with 13 little ones 3 weeks ago(born in july) and now there are 3 left...bad nesting year...at least in region 9 by me
  12. wow and i was worried about my corn.... tough year for plots...
  13. well at least its the digital camera age...i learned the hard way with 35 mm film cams...they worked great but it was a tough lesson all the pics of nothingness and lots of money on developing..... still have 4 or so around..will let them go cheap...
  14. Well 15 in is equivilant to a 4x4.. you need to know what kind of tree oak,maple,poplar.elm.. a good hardwood will suport your ladder if not to high 10-12 feet . Poplar I d look else where. Just make sure you get it up early and brush it in a 4x4 doesn't give much cover. I've had stands in apple trees only 4 in in diameter and they aren't straight level or to comfortable. But if that's the tree that will give you a wind advantage and close shot you do what u have to! Id rather be in a spot that will let me get a deer that I might see than be in a spot where I can see deer that I might get!
  15. I've used both but if the first deer you got the brodhead worked fine. The second didn't...sounds like a shooting form error or perhaps a more alert doe dropped when it heard the shot. Fixed blades work fine and can be put in the same hole as a field point. Deer can jump a string(drop down) a whole body with from top of back to brisket extremly fast especially if alert! So fast it looks like you shot high. Distance to the deer , how alert it is all play a factor. Rule of thumb aim at lower 1/3 of deer vitals if over 20 yards its doesn't matter how fast your bow is a deer is quicker... don't believe me watch some deer vids that show misses in slow motion a lot of the time the archers aim was on..deer moved before the arrow got there...
  16. Nice! Sometimes everything just falls in place...
  17. Poor nesting year, then wet and lots of fox n yotes to work on them (eversmell a wet chicken) the young will stay with the hens till next spring. A few jakes may leave over winter and make their own flock as spring approaches.

    First Rubs

this early it should be a pretty good buck.. earliest ive ever found one was august 17th myself
  19. most growing is done by end of july(3rd-4th week), all that takes place is mineralization now. shedding can start in august with the oldest bucks losing their velvet first. earliest i've seen shed bucks was august 13th when i watched 2 mature bucks spar and was able to catch it on video.
  20. 73 sounds right for the southern zone, i'll take bubba for the northern as i have no idea as i never hunt there..
  21. i've found that a 5 grain increases in powder will raise my round ball approximatly 1 in at 50 yards. if i use fff instead of ff at the same grain 90 for example it will have the same result. finer powder faster burn(more surface area in smaller grain) and it will hit about an 1 in higher same as adding 5 grain. Course i'ver never cronoed the difference in velocities just an observation from the range. but i would assume higher velocity is the difference i see on the target.
  22. they(nwtf) tested it here, the problem is they've (turkeys)never seen it and will not know to scratch for it(hopefully you dont have a clay base soil like most of us in ny so they can scratch for it) so they recomend you disc up part of the plot to expose the tubers. The problem with this is you need the turkeys to get into the plot to begin with... the real question is what are trying to draw the turkeys in fall/spring? there are lots of things that will bring turkey in the fall like iron to a magnet that grow well in ny buckwheat, oats. spring..winter wheat and a clover/alfalfa and left over corn.
  23. ok so its a sidelock so i'll stick with my side locks ..in my kentucky long rifle, 95 grains, and 50 cal round ball drops them to 100yds, my 50 cal kentucky pistol i only use 50 grains and a roundball off a rest i have cleanly dropped deer at 60 yards. most older side locks have a slower twist in the barrel and round balls are the ticket! (and a lot cheaper as well!) surprised your shooting a sabot.. whats the twist in the barrell? 1-48? or 1-66 or 1-32? most picky guns have a slower twist rate and modern sabots will not shoot consistant. if its a fast twist 1-32,(sometimes they will shoot good out of a 1-48) your ok with them and your shooting conicals maxi balls or mini's it may be to fast and the lead is stripping as well...
